The network of base stations expanding the coverage of mobile operators is growing. The signal quality improves and the connection speed increases. But not in all places it is possible to enjoy super-speed 4g LTE internet, even by purchasing a Yota 4g modem.

Poor Signal Reasons:

  • congestion of the network by users;
  • considerable remoteness from the base station (typical for small towns and villages);
  • the place where the modem is located: height, material and wall thickness;
  • located nearby interference in the form of multi-storey buildings, forests, electromagnetic fields from high-voltage power lines.

You can solve the problem of 4g signal amplification by installing an antenna for the Yota modem.

Types of antennas and the benefits of using them

The Yota operator specializes in providing the Internet using high-speed 4g networks. The company sells, in addition to the Yota 4g modem, various modifications of the router, antennas.

Types of industrial antennas:

  1. Panel 4g directional antenna. Has the function of automatically switching to 3G signal if there is no 4g network. There are modifications to work in two frequency ranges;
  2. Parabolic. 4g antenna with maximum gain. Good for when the base station is at great distances. It can be used where there is no signal at all. The disadvantage is the high cost;
  3. Circular omnidirectional. It is mobile, has a magnetic base and can be installed in different places, including in a car. It does not differ in high amplification power and is used in areas with unstable signal reception;
  4. Internet signal amplifiers - indoor antennas. They are connected to the modem using a USB cable.

Important! There are antennas for Yota with built-in modems and routers. If you need to amplify the signal on an existing device, you need to buy antennas without a 4g modem.

If you don't have a modem yet, then buying a combined device will be cheaper than purchasing the elements separately.

Antenna Yota provides an increase in Internet speed up to 10 times. Installation of equipment and its configuration will be within the power of any user who does not have special knowledge.

Homemade amplifiers

If the subscriber is technically prepared, then he can make an antenna for Yota with his own hands. At the first stage, the location of the nearest transmitting center is determined, it is ascertained whether there is a lot of interference in the line of sight. Sometimes connection is not possible even with the most efficient amplifiers. In large cities, a tower located hundreds of meters from the place of residence can provide the same 4g signal quality as in rural areas at a distance of 10-12 km. This is due to the different network congestion.

You need to contact the Yota service department for the necessary information about the nearest tower. They can also give advice on how to correctly position the external amplifier. Other options for finding data are a forum on the provider's website, third-party Internet resources.

Antenna for Yota using an aluminum can

The canned amplifier design for Yota is simple, but will not provide an increase in the speed and stability of the Internet in conditions of too weak a signal. However, such an external antenna can add the lacking stability in the LTE connection. Used exclusively indoors.

In the side surface of an empty can of beer or other drinks, a hole is drilled in the form of an Iota modem. The distance to the center of the hole being made from the bottom surface of the can is calculated using a special calculator for such self-made designs. It can be found on the internet. It is necessary for the transmitting center to route the signal to the amplifier with the least interference. By changing the depth of the modem and carefully turning the jar towards the tower, you can tune the manufactured antenna to receive a signal. The Yota website controls the speed of the Internet connection and ping. A modem with an antenna is connected to a computer via a USB extension cable.

The design resembles a canned antenna, but with a larger reflector area. The reflector can be a cardboard box with a foil-pasted surface, a stainless steel pot, an aluminum bowl, a metal grid, etc. The Yota modem is fixed inside the container using screws installed in the holes drilled on the side, or using other devices.

The pseudo-satellite can be fixed outside the building, while protecting the modem with a plastic wrap or plastic tube. If you correctly orient the homemade design, the 4g signal will increase significantly.

Important! Based on the practice of making a pseudo-satellite, the modem should be placed perpendicular to the ground, parallel to the reflector surface.

Experienced users note the reliability and simplicity of Kharchenko's antenna - a thick copper wire bent in the shape of a "figure eight". All dimensions indicated on the Internet for this design must be strictly observed. The wire is fixed over a reflector, which can be an aluminum plate. Isolation of the wire from the reflector is provided. The antenna tunes to the frequency of its operator.

Installation of the structure is carried out on the street. You need to know where the transmitting centers are in order to direct it to one of them, if possible, avoiding interference. It is possible to obtain powerful signal amplification by positioning the amplifier at a sufficient height.

Important! The antenna cable must be connected to the modem through a connector that may not be present. Then the modem is disassembled, and soldering is performed directly on the printed circuit board.

Using a satellite dish

A TV satellite dish is a good solution to get a stable internet connection in problem areas. The ETA modem is placed in a small plastic container (a tube or yoghurt bottle) and fixed in the focus of the plate, where the TV signal converter is usually located. The connection to the computer is provided by a USB cable. The process of tuning the antenna is more complicated.

Points to consider when setting up a parabolic antenna for receiving the Internet:

  1. Unlike tuning to a TV satellite, the dish for the LTE signal is directed lower. This is due to the curvature of the reflection;
  2. For fine tuning, during a slow rotation of the antenna, changes in the quality of the Internet connection are monitored using the Yota computer program. At the point of the best signal reception, the directional dish must be fixed;
  3. After fixing the external antenna, you can try to change the focus position and see how the 4g signal changes. The Yota modem should be installed so that the USB port is on the opposite end from the plate;
  4. If the 4g signal remains unstable, you need to raise the structure higher. Amplification of the signal will give a larger diameter of the dish. A satellite dish of a meter diameter can guarantee a high-quality connection at a distance of 8-10 km from the tower;
  5. Simultaneous use of a satellite dish to receive a television signal and improve the quality of the Internet connection is impossible.

A directional antenna with a parabolic mesh reflector will give the best gain. But it is difficult to find such a structural element for making an antenna; they are not produced by the industry due to outdated standards. Although there are ready-made structures of this type on sale.

Strengthening the LTE signal is feasible using both industrial antennas and do-it-yourself antennas. A homemade antenna requires the presence of certain knowledge and skills. If the user does not possess them, the modem may be damaged. In this case, it is better to purchase factory copies in accordance with existing conditions.

Good afternoon. People living in a private house often face the problem of a lack of high-quality Internet. ADSL is now rarely used, and the speed leaves much to be desired. It is especially problematic if the house is new and there is no telephone, then you will have to pull the wire for the sake of not very fast Internet. And even if there is a telephone, it is not a fact that a line laid for a long time will be suitable for the Internet. Fiber optic is expensive to pull. Some add up with neighbors and then the costs can become acceptable. However, not everyone needs a good internet connection. Remains the mobile Internet. 4G technology maximally allows you to reach 150 Mbit / s, but for such a speed, high-quality signal reception is needed. The built-in antenna (more precisely two) of the modem is not always enough for this. So, today we will make Kharchenko's antenna for the Yota 4G modem. At the moment, YOTA 4G LTE WLTUBQ-108 modems are on sale.

We need:
- YOTA 4G LTE WLTUBQ-108
- Copper wire with a cross section of 2.5 mm
- Iron sheet
- Coaxial wire of 75 Ohm, thin
- Double Pigtail with MS156 on SMA Female
- SMA Male connector
- Drill
- Drill 3 mm
- Plastic tube or any dielectric
- Soldering iron
- Solder, rosin
- Hot melt glue
- Clamps
- USB extension cable

Step 1 Prepare the modem.
Before starting the manufacture of the antenna, it is worth connecting the modem to the computer. Going into the modem settings at 10.0.0.1, write down the SINR / RSRP values. This should be done to compare the change in the signal level after connecting the antenna. The modem is easy to disassemble. It is necessary to pry and remove the top cover with something sharp, for example, an awl or knife. This must be done very carefully, since there is a built-in antenna under the cover. The main thing is not to damage it. Remove the cover:

And from the back it looks like this:

Our modem supports MIMO technology. MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) is a spatial signal coding technology that can increase the bandwidth of a channel. When using this technology, two or more antennas are used for data transmission and the same number of antennas for reception. In our case, we have two antennas. Each antenna has its own socket:

One slot is on the top of the modem, the other is on the side to the right. Leaving the modem open is not good, therefore, putting the case to the modem, we measure out the holes for the nests, and drill with a drill with a diameter of 3 mm:

Extinction is definitely difficult enough. After drilling the holes, we put the case on the modem and see if the holes match the slots. If necessary, enlarge the holes with a knife in the desired direction. After making sure that the holes match the slots, put on the case and close the top cover.

We will connect the antenna to specially prepared sockets. For this we need an adapter. On the one hand, there will be two MS156 connectors (we connect one antenna to two sockets), on the other side there will be a high-frequency SMA Female connector. It can be ordered on aliexpress or bought in a radio parts store:

We connect the pigtail to the modem:

On this we put off, for a while, the modem aside.

Step 2 Calculation of the antenna.
There are a lot of antenna options. In my opinion, the most effective and easy to manufacture is the Kharchenko antenna. It is named after the name of the engineer who developed and described the design of this antenna - Kharchenko K.P. The antenna vibrator will be made of 2.5 mm copper wire. You can use a wire with a cross section of 2 mm. The wire is easy to buy from an electrician. Before making the antenna, the wire insulation should be removed. The vibrator consists of two squares connected at one of their vertices and with the sides disconnected. The antenna wire is soldered at the connection points of the squares. The antenna input impedance is close to 50 ohms. I chose a 75 ohm cable, although it also matches well with a 50 ohm coaxial cable. The length of the sides of the squares is λ / 4, where λ is the wavelength. In our case, this is 115 mm. We make a vibrator according to the following scheme:

Where:
Center frequency f: 2600 MHz
Antenna impedance ρ: 50 Ohm
Wavelength λ: 115mm
Size L1 (outer side of the square): 28.9 mm
L2 size (inner side of the square): 27.6 mm
Size L3 (total length of frames): 81 mm
L4 size (frame width): 40.5 mm
Dimension L5 (gap at the connection point): 1.7 mm
Vibrator-reflector distance D: 13.2mm
Dimension B (reflector width): 115 mm
Dimension H (reflector length): 115 mm
Vibrator wire diameter: 2.5mm
Total wire length (with allowance for turns): 237.9 mm

Step 3 Assembling the antenna.
We solder the wire to the vibrator. As a result, it should look like this:

The reflector can be made from almost any sheet of metal. It is also possible to manufacture a mesh reflector. I chose and recommend you to make it from metal from an old computer system unit. The thickness is sufficient and the coating helps a lot. Cut out a square with a side of 115 mm. You can cut more, I indicate the minimum required side of the square. Make a 6 mm hole in the center. In the corner of the reflector, we also make a 6 mm hole for attaching the antenna. Then we take a small plastic tube or tube from any dielectric. We cut off 13 mm from it and, using hot melt glue, we fix the resulting part in the center of the reflector, so that the holes of the reflector and the tube coincide:

We pass the wire with the soldered vibrator into the central hole of the reflector. We fix the vibrator with hot glue. Consider the installation location well before installation. The antenna must be positioned so that the vibrator is horizontal. Also, it must be turned with a vibrator towards the receiving tower. It is better to place the antenna indoors. If you plan to use it outdoors, it is worth taking care of the waterproofing of the antenna. I fixed the antenna to the side of a window outside. So that as little rain and snow as possible falls on it, I fixed it at the top. Thus, it is, as it were, under the visor:

Remember to drill a hole in the window frame and thread the wire through it.

Step 4 We connect the antenna to the modem.
Install the SMA Male connector on the end of the wire. The middle contact must be soldered, the outer braid is fixed with a metal tube, insulated with heat shrinkage or electrical tape.

How to choose an antenna for Yota?

Yota communication belongs to the 4G generation, it uses a high-frequency signal of the LTE 2600 range, which by its nature (short propagation range, attenuation when passing through walls) is similar to the WiFi 2400 MHz signal. The main advantage of Yota is the high speed of data reception and transmission, the main disadvantage is the short range of base stations (usually up to 5 km). Fortunately, LTE antennas for Yota are designed to eliminate this disadvantage.

The 4G standard implements the technology of diversity in the plane of reception and transmission of the signal, therefore, to amplify Yota, we recommend two-connector 4G MIMO antennas. MIMO antennas show speed gains (especially Upload) over single antennas. It should be noted that dual antennas are more expensive to manufacture and also require two cables to connect to a modem / router.

This section shows how single-connector LTE 2600 antennas are:,
And various dual MIMO antennas:, LUNA 3G / 4G BOX, MIMO

If you have a desire to learn how to work with microtic routers and become a specialist in this area, I recommend using a program based on information from the official course. The course is worthwhile, read all the details here.

Introduction

In the warm season, and not only, in the summer, just more often, I spend a lot of time outside the city in the Moscow region at the dacha. I also work there. In order to be able to work normally, I needed a stable Internet, which I did not have for a long time, and I frankly suffered. I was forced to stay in the city for work. My house is located in a very remote and quiet area, next to the forest, which is an undoubted plus in terms of silence and solitude, and at the same time a minus in terms of communication.

Cellular communication itself is working more or less normally, you can talk. But with the Internet there was an outright disaster. Operators are caught by everything, but the Internet is "no". Barely catches 3g. And the prices were never pleasing. To work normally, I need a lot of traffic, I didn't really want to pay for it at the available tariffs, so I didn't really work out the question.

Everything changed when I tried the Yota operator with her unlimited the internet. As soon as I saw that my house seemed to be in the coverage area, I decided to buy a SIM card first and check the connection. I can install 2 SIM cards in my smartphone, so I began to use it as a second one. I liked the tariffs of the eta because there is no roaming throughout Russia, which is very convenient. I used the Internet in my smartphone when I left my home region.

With this smartphone, I arrived at the dacha and checked the connection. The miracle did not happen, since the yota works on the same base stations as the megaphone, therefore the connection was the same as that of the megaphone, practically none. It was not very convenient to use the Internet, the connection was constantly interrupted, although at times it was possible to download something. In general, I was in the zone uncertain reception 3g. I decided to do the next thing: I climbed into the attic and put my phone down by the window that faces the side where the nearest base station is located. I began to check the connection and was very happy. It became much better, the Internet on the phone itself worked tolerably, sometimes the lte signal was caught.

This inspired me very much and I decided to turn on the access point on the phone, leave it in the attic, and connect with a laptop to the point from another floor and work. This is where I first met Yota restriction.

Yota limitation

The essence of Eta's limitation is that it has different tariff plans for different devices with different prices. I had a SIM card with the cheapest tariff, which allowed unlimited use of the Internet on my smartphone. If you are trying to distribute the Internet to other devices from a smartphone, then yota detects this and displays a page with a warning that this is prohibited on your tariff, but if you want to use the Internet, then pay for it separately.

I went in search to see what is on this topic. It turned out that the topic is very popular. To bypass the limitation at that time, it was enough on the computer set TTL 65, if you have an Android smartphone, that's all. The bottom line is that on the smartphone itself there are 64 TTL packages, if there are 65 on the computer, then these packages will fly from the smartphone with TTL 64 and it will not know that you are distributing the Internet to someone. It helped me. For a while, I used the Internet like that. But with time I decided to change something. I was tired of constantly climbing into the attic to install a smartphone, I wanted to distribute the Internet to other devices, the smartphone was discharged from the mode of operation as an access point. His battery is powerful enough, I had enough for a day of work, but I still did not like this scheme. By the way, I learned how to distribute the Internet to other devices. I had root access to my phone. I installed software on it, which changed the TTL of all flying packets on a smart phone.

It was necessary to resolve the issue with the quality of communication. Here I have already seriously delved into the topic and began to select a solution for my situation.

Choosing an antenna to enhance the lte signal of Yota

I read the forums on the topic of amplifying the lte signal, and began to understand antennas. Hope for success was given by the information that if your phone somehow picks up a signal, then the antenna will definitely help and will be much better. That is, it is not a problem to improve an existing signal. Problems arise mainly where there is no signal from a regular phone at all.

In the end, I bought myself - panel antenna directional MIMO 3G / 4G LTE, 20 dB (1900-2700 MHz)- http://450mhz.ru/antenna/?id=207. She comes with 5-meter wires. This was enough for me, I did not buy additional wires. But separate adapters were needed to connect this antenna to a usb modem. I bought these - http://450mhz.ru/accessories/?id=91. To mount the antenna to the wall of the building, you need to buy a separate bracket. I bought this - http://450mhz.ru/accessories/?id=215.

Installing the antenna for good reception is necessary in the line of sight of the base station. It should not be obstructed by terrain folds or other buildings. There will be little sense from it in this case. I was lucky, my house is high enough and from the attic the view of the base station is not blocked by anything, just over the roof of the house it passes.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attach the antenna to the bracket. I just don't have the ability to do it. The height of the house is large, prefabricated stairs are very unreliable at this height. It is impossible to work with a tool on them, and even more so to attach the antenna, it is heavy. In addition, then you need to properly adjust it, check the connection, turn it, and possibly do it several times. An option would be to call the lift and install from it, but I did not go for it, because after the lift leaves, I will not have access to the antenna at all, I will not be able to position it differently, if necessary, or check ...

It was necessary to either collect the scaffolding along the wall of the house, or somehow fix it on the roof. In general, it is difficult. I got off with a little blood. I installed the antenna in the attic next to the window and pointed it to the base station. I twisted it a little, turned it around, tilted it in different directions and chose the optimal position.

This turned out to be enough for a confident reception to appear at the lower border. That is, out of 5 sticks, I stably caught one, sometimes 2. The signal was stable, the speed was 1-5 megabits. This is enough for me to work. And for everything else. But of course I want more. I think the signal will be even better if the antenna is taken out to the street and installed higher on the bracket. But I haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Selection of usb modem for Yota

The antenna had to be connected to a modem. According to reviews on the Internet, I chose a model that is guaranteed to work with Yota SIM cards. It turned out Huawei E3372/ 827F / M150-2 - 4G LTE / 3G USB http://450mhz.ru/USB_modem/?id=192. In the store I bought one already stitched for all Moscow operators. I inserted the SIM card of the ety and immediately everything worked when the modem was connected to the computer. Or not right away. I don’t remember exactly, I did everything more than a year ago. I will try to reproduce the entire sequence of my actions. Most likely the modem worked with some other operator, which I checked. I had a SIM card for my smartphone, it is unlikely that it will just work in a usb modem.

I found a more convenient firmware for the modem on the Internet and reflashed it, along the way replacing the IMEI taken from an old broken phone. I found all the information on working with the modem on the w3bsit3-dns.com forum. I tried to look for the instructions that I did, but could not find it. There is a lot of information, but exactly what I used, I did not come across. Therefore, I will only describe the sequence of actions that I performed. You yourself are looking for fresh instructions for this, there are a lot of them, I just looked, you have to take a modem and try. I have nothing to check on, I don't want to jerk the working modem.

  1. I have flashed the Huawei E3372 modem with fresh firmware HiLink.
  2. It seems that I installed some more convenient web interface separately, I don't remember exactly.
  3. I changed the IMEI of the modem, taking it from the old phone.
  4. Installed TTL fix. It was in the form of a small patch.

After that, I could just insert a yota SIM card, a modem into a computer or router and use the Internet. At first, everything was fine, the further, the more often I began to receive a page from Yota with a warning about restricting the distribution of the Internet. I began to read the information and realized that only the TTL fix was lacking. Yota began to determine who uses the Internet by the resources to which they accessed. For example, if you have a SIM card for a smartphone, and you go to the Microsoft update server, or play an online game for a PC, it is obvious that you are distributing the Internet and you need to restrict access.

At first, it was enough to make changes to the hosts file on computers, restricting access to resources. I searched the list of resources on the Internet. But over time, restrictions appeared more and more often. For example, I noticed that Internet access was immediately terminated as soon as I updated the ports on freebsd in the virtual machine. In addition, they began to use the Internet from other devices - phones, tablets. It was very difficult or impossible to set up lists of restrictions on all of them. I began to address the issue radically. Eventually .

I ran a little ahead, without telling yet about connecting a usb modem to a microtic.

Setting up a usb modem from Yota to mikrotik

We have an antenna, the modem is stitched under it and is ready to work. It remains to connect it to the mikrotik router and configure the distribution of the Internet from yota. Using adapters, we connect the antenna to the modem and plug it into the mikrotik. I got it like this:

My microtic RB951G-2HnD with OS version 6.33.3 detected the modem without any problems. I didn't have to configure anything. A new one appeared in the list of interfaces with the name lte1:

Since the dhcp server is already built into the HiLink firmware, in microtik it is necessary to run the dhcp client on the lte interface. You will get an address from the network range 192.168.8.0.

That's all for me on my internet via yota in a country house.

Conclusion

Let me summarize what has been done. I will build the entire sequence of actions point by point.

  1. I bought a yota SIM card and made sure that at least some signal is being caught in the country.
  2. I bought a usb modem and flashed it to work on the yota network, replaced imei and installed ttl fix.
  3. I bought an antenna to amplify the 4g / lte signal, adapters and connected it to the modem.
  4. I connected the modem to Mikrotik, set up the distribution of the Internet via wifi.
  5. I set up an openvpn client on a microtic to mask Internet traffic from the Internet.

At the moment, this configuration is working successfully. I have no doubt that after a while they will come up with some new scheme for blocking unauthorized distribution of the Internet from tariffs that are not intended for this. We will then think about what to do.

I already have an idea how to overcome future blockages from yota. I even thought to use it now. For example, through this, connect via rdp to another computer and work on it. On the local computer, disconnect all connections except rdp to the specified address. Of course, this is not so convenient, and other devices will not be able to access the Internet. But this is not very scary. I need the Internet in the main one for work, and through rdp it is even more convenient for me in some cases. I use a ready-to-use and customized workspace that is accessible from anywhere. If the Internet is stable, then working is almost as convenient as at a local desktop.

And let everyone else take a break from their gadgets and the Internet in nature. Good for health. I am waiting for advice, comments, tips on what I have written. Perhaps someone will suggest a simpler and more convenient option. I will also add that when I leave, I take the modem with me and use it as needed in Moscow or somewhere else. Very comfortably. I consider this a significant advantage of my decision. Paid unlimited internet is always with me.

Just in case, I will also give a link based on microtic. The topic is relevant just for a country house, since the seamlessness of the solution based on the microtic capsman is very conditional and is not suitable everywhere in the enterprise. But for home use just right - budget and simple.

Let me remind you that this article is part of a single cycle of articles about.
