Lapland is famous for its ski resorts, but this next one is special. The resort of Salla, located in southern Lapland, is famous for the fact that the world's oldest ski was found here in 1932. It is about 5000 years old, that is, we can say that already in 3000 BC prehistoric people were skiing on the slopes of the Salla hill! And in 2009, Salla became the best ski resort in Finland.

Salla is a municipality with its center in the village of the same name. The Salla region covers an area of 5,800 square kilometers and has a permanent population of about 4.5 thousand people. Just 50 years ago, Salla was inhabited by three times as many people, but the decadent agriculture in these areas forced residents to leave their native lands and go to other regions to seek their fortune. With the development of the tourism business, things in the region's economy have improved significantly. And over time, people pulled back. Now Salla is increasing its economic potential, based primarily on the tourism business.

The Salla ski resort is located 10 kilometers from the village of the same name on the Sallatunturi hill. The proximity of Salla to the Russian border gives a special piquancy to a holiday in this place. Salla is very famous in the world of big-time sports. Already in 1937, downhill and slalom competitions for the Finnish Championship were held here. At this time, most of the now fashionable resorts did not even exist in projects. The resort's glorious historical and sporting past only adds to the pride of Salla.

Salla is located among the largest tracts of untouched forest in Europe, far from large cities and only 20 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The beauty of wild nature, which has hardly been touched by human hands, can work wonders. A person becomes more spiritual, the feeling of anxiety and haste leaves him. Here life is leisurely, among these centuries-old forests, silent hills and harsh nature.

Getting to the Salla resort is not difficult; there are several options for this. The first of them is related to air transport. From Moscow or St. Petersburg you need to fly to Helsinki, fortunately this is not difficult, 3 flights depart daily from these cities to the Finnish capital. And then take domestic flights to Kuusamo, the journey takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, or to Rovaniemi, the journey takes 1 hour and 40 minutes, respectively. And then 2 hours by bus and you are already at the resort of Salla.

The second option is to go by train. Again, from Moscow or St. Petersburg several trains depart daily towards Helsinki. In the capital of Finland, you change to the Helsinki-Kemijärvi train and after 9 hours you will be at the Kemijärvi railway station, from which it is only 1 hour and 20 minutes by bus to Salla.

You can combine these two methods to reduce the cost of travel. Fly to the capital of Finland by plane, and then go by train, or vice versa.

Due to the fact that the Salla resort is located near the border with Russia, you can use the new Salla automobile crossing. To cross the border you must have a pre-issued visa. Keep in mind that according to Finnish customs regulations, there is a restriction on the import of gasoline into the country, so don’t rely too much on your own fuel; you’ll still have to buy it here.

If you plan to take a road trip on the way to Salla, try to drive as much of the way as possible through Finland. And the roads are better and look at the landscapes outside the window.

Among the attractions of the Salla ski resort, first of all, is, of course, nature. The nature of the Finnish Arctic is harsh and inaccessible, but this is at first glance. Upon closer acquaintance, you will feel her warm attitude towards you, her beauty, seemingly simple, and on the other hand, the elaborate, cold beauty of the North. There is not such a riot of colors here as in the tropical jungle or on the southern islands; there is only one color - white. But there are so many shades hidden in the white cover of the entire nature of the Arctic that there is enough for any tropical island. And when summer gives way to a long winter, everything is covered with the green of dense forests, which alternate with the blue of lakes and fast rivers. Nature alone is enough to make you fall in love with the Salla resort at first sight. And if you add the famous Northern Lights to everything, then all the beauty of tropical resorts fades.

But not only admiring nature is possible at the Salla resort. Still, the main purpose of this resort is winter sports. The resort of Salla is famous for its glorious skiing tradition. This is where alpine skiing originated in Finland. On the slopes of Salla Hill, 70 years ago, the first slalom championship in Finnish history was held. Much water has passed under the bridge since then, but these traditions are only multiplying. During this time, several generations of Finnish athletes were raised, among whom there are many Olympic medalists, European and even world champions. The Salla resort, the first-born of a whole galaxy of Finnish ski resorts, also has a part of the credit for this.

Now, having brought together all the acquired professionalism, the Salla resort offers everyone the opportunity to take advantage of the accumulated experience. High level Salla ski resort is confirmed by dozens of athletes who have chosen the resort's slopes as a training base. The best athletes not only in Finland, but also in many foreign countries train here. Periodically, competitions in many types of alpine skiing, both national and international, are held on the slopes of Salla. In total, Salla has more than 15 slopes with trails. For tourists who are just beginning their acquaintance with winter sports, there are entry-level trails and slopes. The total length of all routes is about 140 kilometers, of which 41 kilometers are illuminated.

In Salla you can go downhill or cross-country skiing, slalom or downhill. For those interested, there are also trails for snowmobiling of any difficulty level. For local flavor, you may be offered a ride on a dog or reindeer sled. Fans of hiking on snow crust can do this with the help of snowshoes. By the way, there are rental points for any equipment, including children's equipment.

For those who have started skiing for the first time or are not yet confident, there is a ski school. In which experienced instructors will teach you how to at least stay on your skis, under their guidance you can make your first descent from the mountain.

The season favorable for skiing in Salla opens at the beginning of November and ends at the beginning of June. But with the end of the winter season, the Salla resort does not close for a break. In summer you can also have a good rest here. All infrastructure, including hotels, shops, tourist centers continue to operate. In summer, you have the opportunity to organize walking tours through dense forests, especially since the southern part of the Salla region is occupied by national park Olanka, with beautiful nature and hiking trails. In the forest you can meet deer, foxes, wolves and even the owner of the taiga - the brown bear. For fishing lovers in Lapland, summer is a heavenly time. The local lakes and rivers are rich in fish. You can catch perch, pike, and grayling.

Fans of cycling will also find something to do; many cycling routes passing through the hills and plains will allow you to ride a bicycle while admiring the surrounding nature.

Accommodation of tourists is possible at will in several different places. There are comfortable hotels where you will feel at home, with a full package of amenities. You can stay in one of the 50 country houses, which will allow you to be closer to nature. By the way, in terms of comfort, country houses are in no way inferior to hotels and campsites. There is also the opportunity to live in a real Finnish farmhouse. True, the house is equipped with all kinds of appliances to the maximum, but this does not diminish the color at all. Still, rest should take place in comfort and coziness. For those traveling with a motorhome, a special town with all amenities has been built. The best ski resort Salla is waiting for you to visit!

Just 8 kilometers from Rovaniemi is the Santa Park entertainment center.

This is not just an amusement park, but a whole fairy-tale town that immerses even an adult in an atmosphere of goodness and miracles. “Santa Park” is located in an artificially constructed cave, which in itself is unusual.

When you arrive here, walk along the mysterious corridor, visit the school and the elf toy workshop. Smell the aroma of freshly baked goods by stopping by Mrs. Claus's Gingerbread Kitchen. Here you can decorate delicious gingerbread yourself, eat it right away with a cup of tea, or buy it as a gift to friends.
