All about the lg leon phone. LG Leon: Review of LG's budget smartphone. Bluetooth is a standard for secure wireless transfer of data between different types of devices over short distances.

Screen type: IPS (In Plane Switching) is a high-quality liquid crystal matrix, which was created to eliminate the main disadvantages of matrices based on TN technology. The IPS-matrix in the entire spectrum most adequately reproduces colors at different angles of view, with the exception of some positions and colors. TN-matrix has, as it were, a better response than IPS, but not always. For example, the IPS-matrix behaves better during the transitions from gray to gray. This matrix is still resistant to pressure. Touching a TN or VA matrix results in "excitement" or a certain reaction on the screen. The IPS-matrix has no such effect. In addition, ophthalmologists confirm that the IPS-matrix is the most comfortable for the eyes. In this way, the IPS-matrix brings a bright and clear picture regardless of viewing angles, better for working on the Internet, watching movies. But the most important thing is for image processing and photo viewing. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - Liquid crystal displays. The very first displays used in mobile devices, and not only in telephones. Their main feature is that they have very low power consumption due to the impossibility of displaying a color image. They do not emit light and therefore phones are upgraded with backlight lamps. Some phones had several different backlight colors based on the presence of different LEDs around the perimeter of the display. This extraordinary solution was applied, for example, in Ericsson phone A3618. Pixels are clearly visible on this type of display, and such displays cannot boast of a high resolution. In order to extend the life of such displays, they were made inverted, i.e. text and symbols were not displayed as filled pixels, but, on the contrary, inactive against the background of filled ones. This resulted in light text on a dark background. Currently, this type of display is used in the cheapest budget models (Nokia 1112) and as an external one in some clamshell phones (Samsung D830).

TFT (Thin Film Transistor) - Liquid crystal displays based on active matrix thin film transistors. There are three transistors for each pixel, corresponding to three colors (RGB - red, green, blue). On the this moment, these are the most common displays and have several advantages over other displays. They are distinguished by the shortest response time and the rapid development - constantly growing resolution and number of colors. These displays are most common in mid-range phones and above. Working resolutions for them: 128x160, 132x176, 176x208, 176x220, 240x320 and others, less common. Examples: Nokia N73 (240x320, 262 thousand colors), Sony ericsson K750i (176x220, 262k colors), Samsung D900 (240x320, 262k colors). TFTs are very rarely used as external displays for clamshells.

CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) - Color passive matrix liquid crystal displays. Each pixel of such a display consists of three combined pixels, which correspond to three colors (RGB). Some time ago, almost all phones with color displays were based on this type. And now the lot of such displays is budget models. The main disadvantage of such displays is their slowness. The undoubted advantage of such displays is their cost, which is much lower than TFT. Based on simple logic, we can assume that in the future TFT will oust this type of displays from the mobile phone market. The color evolution of such displays is quite extensive: from 16 to 65536 colors. Examples: Motorola V177 (128x160, 65 thousand colors), Sony Ericsson J100i (96x64, 65 thousand colors), Nokia 2310 (96x68, 65 thousand colors).

UFB (Ultra Fine and Bright) - Liquid crystal displays with increased brightness and contrast on a passive matrix. We can say that this is an intermediate option between CSTN and TFT. This type of display boasts lower power consumption compared to TFT. For the most part, such displays were used Samsung in mid-range phones. This type displays are not widely used. Examples: Samsung C100 / 110 (128x128, 65 thousand colors).

TN is one type of TFT display matrix. Roughly speaking, TN is the simplest and cheapest TFT matrix. The viewing angles are the narrowest.

LG decided to kick off 2015 with an update to its entry-level and mid-range smartphones price segment... Smartphones with curved screens LG Spirit and Magna and a simple budget employee Leon are replacing last year's models. With the oldest of the new products, LG Magna, we are already, and today it is the turn of the most inexpensive model.

Design and usability

Compared to Magna and Spirit, the LG Leon is the roundest. The model has rounded body lines and a convex lid. The case material, as usual, is plastic under the metal.

The case thickness of 10.9 mm hints that this is an inexpensive model. Overall body dimensions are acceptable - 129.9 x 64.9 mm, the smartphone feels relatively compact, but the 4.5-inch screen has wide bezels.

The black bezel is refreshed by a thin strip of plastic matching the color of the lid, above it is the familiar manufacturer's logo, screen, speaker and a set of sensors. The interface connector and the main microphone are located at the bottom, at the top there is a headset jack and a second microphone for noise canceling.

The control keys are traditionally located on the back under the camera lens, but this time they are designed as part of the cover, without which it will not be possible to turn on the smartphone. Without removing the battery, you can install only a memory card, and the slots for two MicroSIM are located under the battery.

The build quality of the LG Leon is not familiar high level, all parts fit tightly to each other, there are no creaks or backlash. Since the model is compact, anyone can easily reach the top edge of the screen. The control buttons are also convenient. The volume keys are made of smooth plastic, they are slightly sunken and the finger fits perfectly into the groove it should be. The power button, on the contrary, protrudes slightly - you won't get confused.

Like the older models, there are three case colors to choose from: titanium, white and gold.

Display

LG Leon received a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels. The brightness of the screen is changed only manually, there is no light sensor, as in most models of the manufacturer. The brightness adjustment range is from 6 to 256 cd / m2, the measured contrast is 1 to 805.

The quality of the factory calibration is mediocre, but for relatively budget models this does not play a big role. Although the model is positioned as one of the most affordable in the line, it received a screen without an air gap, so the picture looks nice, at least there are noticeable positive changes compared to the “state employees” of the last year. As strange as it sounds, in terms of color reproduction, I like the Leon's screen more than the Magna's display.

Another thing is that the screen also has drawbacks. The maximum brightness of the backlight is not high, so on a sunny day you will have to peer a little at the screen and cover with your hand from the bright sun. The oleophobic coating did not appear either, so fingerprints on the glass will be the eternal companions of the LG Leon buyer.

Hardware platform

After using Qualcomm Snapdragon 200/400, LG decided to take a closer look at MediaTek products. The first sign was, and today all new products use such chipsets. In the case of LG Leon, the manufacturer did not experiment and chose a time-tested solution - MediaTek MT6582 (4 Cortex-A7 cores, GPU Mali-400). Volume random access memory- 768 MB, built-in - 4 GB plus a slot for memory cards.

Similar to Magna and Spirit, LG Leon works under Android 5.0.1 Lollipop with LG UX proprietary interface. It is extremely curious that the overall speed of the new item turns out to be better than that of the older brothers Magna and Spirit. Most likely, the best optimization of the firmware for specific model, which once again confirms the dampness of the first Android versions Lollipop. Overall, the Leon performs reasonably and definitely faster than the LG Magna.

Stability issues Wi-Fi operation or we didn’t notice GPS.

Telephone functionality is implemented at the usual level. Two SIM-cards work on the basis of one radio module, and a special on-screen key is allocated to switch between cards.

The smartphone received loud speakers, a noticeable vibration alert, so it will be difficult to miss a call or not hear the interlocutor even in noisy conditions.

Working hours

The removable battery of the hero of the review has a capacity of 1900 mAh, which is enough for two days of work with an average load, including constant data synchronization, communication in instant messengers and social networks. In terms of battery life, Leon does not present any surprises - its autonomy corresponds to a good average level for similar devices.

Cameras

LG Leon received two cameras. The main one has a resolution of 5 megapixels, it is equipped with autofocus and flash, the maximum resolution of the video taken is FullHD. Front-camera with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels.

The quality of the main camera is familiar to inexpensive smartphones... It will be enough to photograph a static plot for memory, when the presence of the photo itself is more important than its quality. The camera is also suitable for domestic applications, for example, if it becomes necessary to photograph an advertisement or other text.

The front camera, even despite the presence of special selfie shooting modes, is purely nominally present in the smartphone - you should not expect anything more from a 0.3 megapixel module, except for a portrait that you will look like.

Outcomes

LG Leon looks like an improved budget employee of 2013/2014. It is easy to imagine that the company took a classic inexpensive device for $ 100, replaced the chipset with a more efficient one, added a bit of RAM and a better screen. From this point of view, we have a rather successful device, the traditional bonus to which is a high-quality case, normal autonomy and good speakers - this is what smartphones of large brands often differ in.

In terms of cost, the Leon turns out to be less attractive, as its $ 140 turns into 3299 recommended hryvnias. The model finds itself at the very beginning of the mid-price range, where users pay more attention to the characteristics, and less to the brand. If you just choose a smartphone for calls from a well-known company, then LG Leon may suit you, it will be more interesting than some offers from Samsung or HTC, but if you are going to use the smartphone for its intended purpose, install programs, then it is better to choose a more productive option for the same money ...

Introduction

At the international exhibition MWC 2015, LG demonstrated three not very expensive devices under the names Spirit, Magna and Leon. We have already met the first two. The review was made for both devices at once, since they differed little from each other. Of course, Leon should have been included in the text, but at that time he was not available for testing.

What is Leon? This is a smartphone, simple to the limit, on the latest version of the system - Lollipop. Equipped with the most common budget chipset from MediaTek, less than 1 GB of RAM inside, the battery and camera are average, but the price is not the highest: now you can buy LG Leon from 7,000 rubles.

Who is it for this model? Most likely, for those who care about the brand, that is, the A-brand, the price "ceiling" is up to 8,000 - 9,000 rubles, and specifications the gadget is not too important. By the way, a large number of letters come to my mail with just such a request. Here you go, just what you wanted: a cute smartphone for calls, social networks and the Internet.

Design, dimensions, controls

LG Spirit, Magna and Leon devices are similar in terms of not only parameters, but also appearance: slightly oval shapes of the top and bottom edges, a sloping back, a plastic case for metal and the obligatory presence of two mechanical volume control buttons and a power button on the back of the device. That is, in fact, only the size of the device changes due to the fact that different screen diagonals are used. I don't like this decision. It is difficult to stand out: either you have a cheap Leon, or more expensive Spirit or Magna. Some users mobile phones bother just on this.

Leon's dimensions are 129x64x10.9 mm. As always, the device is fat, despite the fact that the battery costs only 1900 mAh. I do not understand the LG developers at all: the old L7 Dual with a 2460 battery is 9.7 mm thick, not so long ago the LG L Bello with a 2540 battery and a 10.7 mm case thickness was reviewed. Question: how can you manage to make the device thicker with less battery capacity?

The Leon fits perfectly in the hand thanks to the comfortable lid with an ergonomic design. The gadget is definitely suitable for those who want a device that is small in size, and still reduce the thickness to quite adequate 7 - 8 mm.

Sold by LG in three color options: gold, white and gray (officially called "Titan"). We have glamorous gold on the test. It looks, by the way, very good: the front side is dark, part of the lower front edge of the device is gold, some of the side edges are dark, the panel is gold. The surface is matte, but slightly rough to the touch, since there are small longitudinal notches (as if polished metal). Over time, the lid will wear off, since there are those same notches. The assembly is excellent, there are no complaints: there is no creak or backlash, the back side does not bend up to the battery.

There is an oleophobic coating on the screen. It is not of the highest quality, but it’s better than without it at all, as on the LG G2 mini: the device is expensive, but does not have such an important component. The finger glides on the Leon's screen well.

Above center is the speech speaker. Its volume is slightly above average, the interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly, the timbre is pleasant: there are both low and high frequencies. To the right of the speaker is the proximity sensor and front camera. LG decided to save money on the light sensor - a minus. You will manually adjust the brightness slider. This is not the first time I've come across LG devices without this sensor.

The buttons are on-screen, under the display there is only the company logo.

At the bottom there is a microUSB and a microphone, on the top there is a second microphone and a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones. Traditionally, there are no elements left and right. Rear: camera peephole, flash, speaker and power button flanked by two mechanical volume keys. Power button silver color, slightly convex, has concentric notches, pressure is relatively tight, the stroke is small.

The cover is removed by prying it off by the notch of the microUSB connector. Under the panel at the bottom right is a microSD slot, under the battery on the left is SIM2, on the right is SIM1.

Display

This device uses a 4.5-inch screen. The physical size is 55.5x98 mm, the frame at the top is 13.5 mm, at the bottom - 17 mm, on the right and left - about 4.5 mm each. There is an anti-reflective coating, which is quite effective.

The resolution of the Leon display from LG is FWVGA, that is, 480x854 pixels, the aspect ratio is 16: 9, the density is 217 pixels per inch. IPS matrix without air gap.

The maximum brightness for white is 276 cd / m2, the maximum brightness for black is 0.34 cd / m2. Contrast - 800: 1.

The white line is the goal we are trying to achieve. The yellow line (average amount of red, green and blue) is the actual screen data. You can see that we are directly below the target curve, which means that at every value between 45 and 97, the image is dark.

The average gamma value is 2.

Judging by the chart of the levels, there is a clear excess of blue color, and the value "jumps" depending on the brightness: there is a lot of blue at the minimum brightness.

The temperature is approximately the same throughout the entire brightness range. On average, about 7700 K.

Judging by the diagram, the data obtained does not correspond to the sRGB triangle: it is noticeable that the green and red colors are lacking.

All gray points were located outside the DeltaE = 10 radius, which indicates that other shades of colors will be present in the grays.

The viewing angles are maximum, at the corners the picture turns a little violet and yellow, and the brightness is also greatly reduced.

If you do not go into details, I did not like the screen: I would like to have a higher brightness of the backlight, more juicy colors. However, for the money, the display is quite normal.

Viewing angles

Flare

Settings

There is a double tap to activate the backlight.

Battery

This model uses a removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery with a capacity of 1900 mAh. There is no official data on the opening hours.

Despite the small battery capacity, Leon "lives" more or less normally: about 12 hours in normal mode (few calls, network - Wi-Fi, and so on). I think the "fault" here lies in the display (weak backlighting), on the gluttonous chipset, on the optimized version of the OS. The commercials "spin" for about 6 hours at maximum brightness, in the phone mode it functions for about a couple of days (every day for 4 hours of calls). However, in an active mode of use, LG Leon should count on a maximum of 5-6 hours.

Communication capabilities

The device works only in 2G / 3G networks (GSM 900/1800 MHz, WCDMA 900/2100 MHz). For some reason, the frequencies 850 MHz and 1900 MHz are missing. At least such data are indicated on the official website. You can switch between SIM cards using a special button.

There is no NFC chip, OTG mode does not work. The rest is standard for any Android smartphone: GPS, Wi-Fi b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0.

Memory and memory card

In this case, the manufacturer saves again: there is only 768 MB of RAM inside. Frankly speaking, even the cheapest modern devices have been using 1 GB for a long time. Built-in memory "with a gulkin's nose", 4 GB, and one and a half gigabytes are available. It's good that there is a slot for a memory card, the maximum volume is 32 GB.

Cameras

Traditionally, there are two camera modules: 5 MP (F2.7 aperture) and 0.3 MP (F3 aperture). The flash is one-section.

It's natural to talk about good quality in this case, alas, it is not necessary. The picture is relatively decent only in good lighting conditions. As soon as artificial lighting appears or twilight comes, it is useless to photograph: the photos are muddy, the detail is zero, the white balance "floats". Only quick and accurate focus saves the day.

The front camera is a shame and a shame. The videos are written in a resolution of 640x480 pixels.

The camera shoots video in FullHD resolution at 30 fps. The quality is average, the sharpness is instantly directed at a click on the screen, the sound is mono.
