How to paint a satellite dish

Fortunately, they are now inexpensive, and such a purchase will not greatly affect the family budget. But let's get back to painting. satellite dish. Before the painting process itself, the surface of the antenna must be thoroughly sanded. This can be done with the finest sandpaper. Next, degrease the surface of the antenna with acetone. Here's the paint for this restoration need to be selected in advance. The fact is that in the factory, radio-permeable paint is used to paint satellite antennas. And if you cannot find a similar one, then you will need to check the existing one for the effect of radio wave penetration high frequency. To do this, paint a piece of thin paper with your paint and, after drying, conduct an experiment. But do not forget that the signal level from a new antenna will always be better, since over time, old antennas not only rust the surface, but also the geometry changes. Your satellite dish is rusty and the paint is coming off in chunks - don’t rush to buy a new one. In many cases, it is sufficient to clean, sand and paint.

Small traces of rust should be dealt with in advance to prevent corrosion from spreading to the entire antenna.

As is known at the factory, satellite antennas are painted with special powder paints. Negatively charged particles of powdered paint adhere to the antenna and, under the influence of high temperatures, melt and paint the desired surface.

We have no need for such complex technologies and we simply cannot implement this at home.

So what do you need to paint a satellite dish at home?

First, sand it well with fine sandpaper. I think polishing would be unnecessary. The main thing is not to damage the antenna itself (make dents or bend it).

For painting, you need to purchase appropriate radio-permeable paint. Any one will not work and it will not always be possible to guess. For this it is better to choose.

We apply a layer of the test paint to plexiglass or a sheet of paper, wait until it dries and conduct an experiment.

On the tuned antenna we record the signal quality indicator. We fix our sheet, covering the converter, and look at the signal level again. If the quality has not changed, you can safely use this paint.

Another check option. In the microwave, cover a glass of water with our painted plexiglass and turn it on for 5 minutes. If the plexiglass is cold, the paint is suitable.

I think it would be better to determine using the first option, since the signal attenuation may be small, but we need the entire useful signal, while the accuracy of the indicators is more accurate. Besides, if something goes wrong with the microwave oven, it’s a pity.

It is advisable to prime the surface before painting. We carry out the same series of experiments with the primer.

It is better to apply the paint with a small roller in two layers, avoiding drips. back part mirrors can also be used with a brush.

Matte paint will be better than glossy. In summer, the glare from the sun collects in a beam and melts the converter cover or multifeed. Do we need it? Of course not. That's why we choose matte.

There is also an option with an aerosol can of car paint. This type of painting will be strong and durable.

By transforming the satellite dish, we extended its service life for several more years. And if you are an artist, then your antenna is also a work of art.

Currently, satellite dishes are already installed in many private and apartment buildings. Over time, such antennas begin to rust, the paint begins to peel off, their appearance is lost, and the signal also disappears, but as they say, nothing lasts forever. We installed our antenna back in 2008, during all this time it has served us faithfully and without demanding special attention and care. After 10 years of service, it became corroded. At home, I decided to put the antenna in order, namely, completely paint the satellite dish and, if possible, tune it. Why if, because I haven’t done this before, but it was interesting to try.

As you can see in the photo, it doesn’t look very good, the paint has peeled off on the plate itself, and all the galvanized elements of the antenna are rusty. A few more years and through holes might have appeared.

After examining the antenna up close, I decided not to follow the path of least resistance, namely to clean and paint in place, without dismantling and disassembling, this would of course be faster. But since I was doing it for myself, I decided to take the time and do the work better, even if I spent a little more time.

Dismantling a satellite dish

Before starting dismantling, I recommend that you remember, or better yet, take a photo of the location of the antenna itself, as well as all its elements. This will help you understand when assembling what goes where and with what. Of course, this is not the most complex product, but if you have not encountered this before, the photos taken earlier will help you during assembly and installation.

My antenna is located at an accessible height on the roof, it is easily accessible from a ladder, so after unscrewing the nuts, I removed it without any problems.

However, you must be careful when working at height! If necessary, it is better to ask an assistant to help you remove it. The antenna itself is not too heavy, but it is bulky, so caution is a good idea.

Disassembling the antenna

Some threaded connections were so rusty that it was impossible to unscrew them; they had to be cut off with a grinder.

Removing rust

I cleaned the antenna from rust accessible tool, which was at hand. I carefully cleaned the entire area of ​​the plate. I cleaned not only the rust, but the entire surface. The fact is that under the paint in places that are sometimes invisible to the eye, pockets of corrosion are hidden and they must be cleaned out.

It is also necessary to clean the remaining elements of the antenna.

Then I treated the plate and all its parts with a rust converter. After the surface had dried, I cleaned the plate again, just to be safe.

But old bolts and nuts are practically unsuitable for reinstallation.

Painting a satellite dish

Now you can start painting the entire satellite dish.

Experts usually recommend special radio-permeable paint for painting. I didn’t have such paint, but I had ordinary white PF-115 enamel on hand, and I painted the entire antenna with it.

In my opinion, the main thing is that the paint is of high quality, namely, resistant to fading and other atmospheric influences. It doesn’t matter what you use to paint with a brush or roller.

As you can see from the photo above, one coat of paint is not enough here, so after the paint had dried, I decided to paint it again and this is what happened.

I also painted the rest of the parts twice; I just washed the plastic parts.

Assembly and installation of a satellite dish

Assembly is carried out in the same sequence as disassembly. Since the old fasteners were unusable, I used new bolts and nuts that I found in my store. If desired, you can buy new galvanized ones.

We fix the heads on the multifeeds, attach the fasteners, but do not tighten them too much, we do this whole procedure on the ground, and finally screw them on the roof after setting up the antenna. After assembly, we proceed to installation on a pre-installed pipe.

Using the marks (on the old paint) on the pipe and the photo, I established the previous location (its direction) of the satellite dish. Next, I tried to configure the satellites, starting with the central head, it is responsible for SIRIUS. By rotating slowly and moving closer and further away from the plate, I tried to capture maximum quality signal. The signal quality was maximum around 80 (lower scale), this is quite enough. The data that is shown in the photo is displayed in the lower right corner when you press the menu button on your tuner's remote control.

I couldn’t set up the other two extreme heads, so I had to resort to outside help. The specialist with the device quickly set up the remaining two heads (converters). Therefore, if you are not confident in your abilities in terms of setting up an antenna, you can safely turn to specialists for help.

After the antenna is configured, you can finally fix the wires, as well as finally tighten all the bolts and nuts. After they were finally tightened, I painted all the bolted connections with paint.

That's all there is to painting a satellite dish; of course, not everything is as easy as it seems; you definitely need to put in effort and time. In terms of time spent, I think a couple of days off is enough, it all depends on how quickly the paint dries, for me the enamel took a day to dry. Regarding the signal quality, I did not notice a difference between the factory coating (new) and after painting with enamel, the signal quality did not become worse. Of course, if you want, you can buy a new plate, but why spend extra money. I hope my experience will help you.

1. The most main question: Can you paint with any paint? No, the paint must be radio-transparent! If the paint contains metals or their derivatives (oxides, etc.), then such paint is not suitable for painting antennas and can lead to a significant weakening of the received signal, even to its absence.
The radiotransparency of paints depends on the base and filler.

2. What paint is suitable for painting?

The choice of paint comes down to studying the composition of the paints, because... The radio transparency property is not indicated on the paints.

If the base is epoxy, then the paint is conditionally transparent.
If the filler is organic or does not absorb microwaves on its own, then such paint can be used in combination with epoxy.

Acrylic enamel without metal fillers is suitable.

Printing inks are mainly metal based - therefore not suitable.

AS-599 is a special radio-transparent paint, sold in a minimum package of 50 kg.

EP-140 – radio-transparent paint up to 20 GHz. It can be gray, white, green, yellow. The base is epoxy, drying temperature -140 degrees. Durability - 50 years. Paint lifetime before crystallization: 5-6 hours.

An affordable option is to use automotive aerosol acrylic paint. The advantage is the uniformity of application and thickness of the layer, as a result of the durability of the coating, and an improvement in the quality of painting, and therefore the quality of application, compared to painting with a brush, where there may be drips and lint from the brush.

There are many practical cases of painting antennas with ordinary PF-115 enamel in white and blue colors and even without a primer. According to people who have done this, the durability of the painting is more than 3 years and the enamel practically did not lead to a deterioration in the signal level.

3. How to test paint for radiotransparency?

There are several ways to test the radiotransparency of paint.

Method for testing paint for radiotransparency in the microwave:
The paint is applied to fluoroplastic. After the paint has dried, you can test the radio transparency of the paint. We place a cup of water in the microwave and our paint sample on fluoroplastic, not close to each other. Microwave heating time: 5 minutes. If the plate is cold after irradiation, then the paint is radiotransparent.

Quite fast and convenient way. The paint is applied to thick paper (this can be a sheet of A4 paper from a sketchbook, whatman paper, etc.). We bring the sheet between the antenna head, closer to the head, and check if there is a signal drop; if not, or very slightly, then the paint is suitable for painting the antenna.

4. Can I sand the antenna mirror with sandpaper?
Yes. The permissible deviation from the profile is 0.1 wavelength. All this is equivalent for both receiving and transmitting antennas.
The wavelength is calculated as follows: the speed of propagation of radio waves (it is equal to the speed of light) must be divided by the frequency, i.e. for 12 GHz - the wavelength will be 2.5 cm.

5. Do I need to prime?
Preferred, but not required. Priming the surface increases the quality and durability of the paint.

ANTENNA REPAINTING TECHNOLOGY

1. Removing old paint.
For this you can use special means, for example, auto-wash or paint remover, which can be bought at any auto store.

2. Sanding.
Necessary to avoid further corrosion and ensure longevity of the newly applied paint.
The first step is to process the rusted areas down to white metal, first with coarse sandpaper or a grinding attachment on a drill or grinder in the form of a brush.
Then uniformly polish the entire surface of the mirror with sandpaper No. 150 or No. 180.
Before sanding, you can use a corrosion remover (phosphoric acid or RustStop) to remove corrosion.

3. Degreasing and dust removal.
It is carried out to prepare the surface for painting using a rag moistened with acetone, solvent, white alcohol, purified gasoline, etc.

4. Primer and drying.
The primer, like the paint, must be radio-transparent. Primers containing filler such as barite (GF-021) are not suitable; barite is used as an absorber of high-frequency radiation.
You can use imported light gray primer, auto primers in aerosols can also be suitable, the main thing is to familiarize yourself with the composition, you can also check it in the microwave.
Aerosol primer, like paint, is preferable to brush painting.
The primer is applied evenly in a thin layer over the entire surface, first from a large distance, then from close, avoiding smudges.
If smudges appear, wash them off with acetone, etc.
After priming, let the antenna dry for 3 to 6 hours (see instructions for the primer) at a temperature close to 20? C.

5. Painting and drying.
Painting is similar to priming; we meet the same requirements as for priming, dry and continue to use the antenna.

And a few more words about painting:
?Of course, it is better to apply paint from an aerosol; it is difficult to apply paint and enamel evenly without streaks with a brush; it is better to use a small roller.
?When spray painting, first apply to the end of the antenna around the entire circumference, then paint the front of the antenna. The spray can will only be enough for this (taking into account that you will apply the paint in 2 layers). The reverse side can be painted with any other metal paint.
?When rust appears, it is better to deal with it as early as possible, without starting, without waiting for the rapid spread of corrosion. This is the fastest and cheap way local touch-up of a separate area than a total repainting of the entire antenna.
?Due to the fact that the thickness of the mirror is less than 1 mm, when rust appears on one side, it often appears on the opposite side, which requires painting on both sides. So, if there is a rusty spot on one side, check if there is one on the opposite side (it may not be visible under a layer of paint).
?Complete sanding of the entire antenna to remove old paint is more preferable, because... Rust at an early stage is not always distinguishable by a layer of paint.
?Remember that the cost of repainting the entire antenna is almost equal to the cost of a new antenna and, moreover, will take a lot of time and also require patience.
?Painting the antenna is justified by the fact that: you have a lot of time and nothing to do, your hands are itching, a craving for creativity, the possibility of painting it in a certain and original color, applying a picture or inscription, or the availability of all the necessary materials.
