If you intend to use the device outside the home, you should purchase a device that runs on batteries. Most likely, it will be an ultrasonic or electronic mesh inhaler. You also need to select a model taking into account medications.

In addition, to truly purchase the best nebulizer for treating your child, consult your pediatrician first. This is especially important before purchasing a device for the treatment of chronic diseases of the respiratory tract.

(nebulizer): types, principle of action, how to use and which one is better to choose.

A nebulizer is a device for inhalation; it sprays medicinal substances, which in turn enter the respiratory tract in the form of tiny particles.

Unlike the inhalation method of previous years, when you had to sit over a pan of potatoes, a nebulizer is safe to use, eliminating the risk of burning the skin and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, and is excellent for both adults and children.

Modern experts consider nebulizer treatment very effective.

Not a single course of therapy for the respiratory system of the body is complete without inhalation procedures.

Unlike a conventional inhaler, which delivers more steam, and not a medicinal drug, the compressor breaks the medicine into small particles and delivers it to the respiratory tract in the required quantity. It is very important to purchase an inhaler and not a steam device. To choose the right inhaler, you need to know what types there are and how they operate.

Types of compressor inhalers

Based on the principle of operation, nebulizers are divided into several types:

  • Steam inhalers that are able to regulate the level of steam supply.
  • Compressor type inhaler.
  • Membrane.

Also, these units can be stationary, which are intended for home use, or pocket-sized.

The pocket inhaler is convenient to take with you.

Portable compressor inhaler allows you to take it with you, thanks to its small size and battery operation. This is necessary for people suffering from asthma and other respiratory diseases that require frequent inhalations to prevent or relieve suffocating spasms. The home nebulizer also has a compact size, but it is not large enough to always keep it with you, and this device operates from the mains.

More modern models have an inhalation-exhalation system, which allows for economical use of medicine. That is, some devices are equipped with a continuous supply of the substance, while others are activated only when the button is pressed while inhaling.

Which one is better to choose?

There are a huge number of inhalation devices on the market and sometimes it is extremely difficult to make a choice so that the treatment is as effective as possible. First of all, you shouldn’t chase brands; you need to select an inhaler specifically for your needs. For example, a nebulizer that runs on electricity will work perfectly for home use. In cases where you always need to keep the inhaler with you, you will need one powered by a battery or batteries.

An equally important aspect in choosing an inhaler is what medications will be used for inhalation. To choose a device that is suitable for the patient in all respects, you need to study each type of nebulizer in more detail.

The size of the particles of the sprayed medicine determines which part of the respiratory system it will enter.

Steam inhaler

The most primitively designed device turns the therapeutic mixture into steam, which the patient must breathe. You can use substances containing essential oils and herbal infusions. This inhalation device is good for coping with colds and inflammatory processes of the respiratory system, as well as some cosmetic problems. The effects of steam inhalation help strengthen the immune, nervous, and genitourinary systems, the pores on the face become cleaner, and the functioning of the circulatory system improves. It is better to choose an inhaler with a system for regulating the steam temperature and its quantity. But it is worth remembering that the device cannot be used if the patient has a fever.

The steam inhaler is attractive because affordable price and ease of use.

The main disadvantage is that when heated, most medicines lose their properties, which significantly reduces the quality of treatment. Some medications with steam settle in the oral cavity, as a result of which they enter the stomach, and this can lead to side effects. For the same reason, there is a high probability that the virus will settle deeper in the organs of the respiratory system.

Important! Even with the most modern steam inhaler, the medicine cannot reach the bronchial tubes and alveoli.

Compressor inhaler

A compressor inhalation device consists of a compressor itself, which supplies air through pressure, an inhaler that sprays a drug, and a breathing mask or a special tube. A nebulizer powered by a compressor is good because it is able to deliver medicinal substances to the most remote parts of the respiratory system.

The most popular type of inhalers, as it can treat a large number of diseases of the respiratory system.

This inhaler will be a real salvation for people suffering from frequent colds, bronchitis, and asthma. The compressor model is in an affordable price category. In addition, another pleasant bonus will be reliability and ease of use; even a child can handle this device. Can be used to treat both adults and children, including infants.

In the case of treatment with expensive medications that have a strictly defined dosage, it is better to give preference to a nebulizer with an inhale-exhale system. If there is no such need, then you should not overpay; a regular model copes with its functions no worse.

If we talk about the disadvantages of this model, these include:

  • Quite a large size of the device.
  • High noise level.
  • This type of inhaler does not allow the procedure to be carried out in a lying position.

Ultrasonic inhalation device

This inhaler breaks the medicine into tiny particles using sound vibrations. high frequency. These models carry out the procedure with minimal noise, and their body has compact dimensions. Convenient to use for treating children.

Popular thanks to small size And low level noise.

The disadvantage of an ultrasonic nebulizer is the inability to use oil-based solutions containing antibacterial, mucolytic or hormonal substances. In addition, often for procedures with ultrasonic nebulizer Special gels and solution cups are required, which incurs additional costs.

Membrane inhaler

Counts universal device, which is capable of spraying the substance into particles of different sizes and operates absolutely silently. Using vibrations of a special membrane, the solution is divided into small particles. Ideal for children and bedridden patients, as it allows inhalation in a lying position.

Since the medicine is broken down into the smallest possible parts, it reaches all parts of the respiratory system and is instantly absorbed, which makes treatment more effective and faster.

Well suited for treating children, as you do not need to sit in one position throughout the entire procedure.

The high price can be attributed to one of the disadvantages, as well as the requirement to strictly follow the instructions. Therefore, before use, you should carefully study the instruction manual, and in case of other questions, consult your doctor.

Why choose a nebulizer?

Inhalation procedures with a nebulizer, regardless of the model, have a whole list of undeniable advantages:

  • The procedure can be performed on patients of any age.
  • Positive effect on the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract.
  • High accuracy of drug dosage.
  • Promotes rapid absorption of drugs.
  • The results of therapy appear quickly.
  • The ability to regulate particle size, which allows drugs to be directed to a specific part of the respiratory system.
  • There are practically no side effects.
  • Simplicity and ease of use.

Types of nebulizers

I won’t bore you with this for too long, since on any online store website you will find detailed types of nebulizers, their pros and cons. I'll tell you briefly. There are 3 types in total:

— Compressor
— Ultrasonic
— Steam
— Mesh nebulizers

Always read the medication instructions to determine which nebulizer can be used for which medication.

Compressor nebulizers suitable for most medications, for example, Lazolvan, Berodual, Pulmicort, they are cheap, simple, but often bulky and you cannot put any aromatic oils, such as eucalyptus oil, into them.

Ultrasonic nebulizers They are silent, allow the use of many drugs, but can lead to the destruction of the active substance due to an ultrasonic wave (for example, aqueous solutions are possible, but oils are not), expensive and often not compact. That is, we get approximately the same as in the previous version, but with a higher price and less choice.

Steam nebulizers They allow only inhalations with oil solutions, herbal decoctions, infusions, and are not suitable for most medications.

Mesh nebulizers(electronic mesh, essentially improved ultrasonic) combine the advantages of compressor and ultrasonic ones: they are silent, ultra-compact, they can be tilted (which is important for sleeping children), there are no restrictions on the active substance (but oil is still not allowed), they allow you to adjust the particle size, but they are expensive and problematic to use, according to reviews. In particular, they require constant maintenance and replacement of meshes/membranes.

Our choice

Most often we use Lazolvan (Egor) and eucalyptus oil (Oleg), or do without a nebulizer at all. Buying 2 nebulizers is not really an option, since I was choosing what to take with me on the road, and weight and size were of paramount importance. Trouble-free operation was also important, because if something breaks on the road, there will be no time or opportunity to fix the device.

So my choice is compact compressor nebulizer and the Machold inhaler. Such a bundle does not take up space, is light, cheap, fulfills its purpose, and does not break.

Omron CompAir C24

Weighs only 500 grams. Doesn't have any additional functions, such as changing the particle size, but the original functionality is quite sufficient. The kit consists of a compressor unit, a power supply (small), two breathing masks different sizes, mouthpiece and nose piece. There is also an Omron CompAir C24 Kids model with toys, it is more suitable for children, but costs a little more. In our case, it is better that Egor is not distracted by the nebulizer at all (we let him watch cartoons), so there was no point in taking Kids.

Based on our experience of use, everything suited us: the aerosol sprays well, the camera can be tilted slightly, and does not require much maintenance. A simple and inexpensive model. Yes, if the child is very restless, who only has to be allowed to breathe in his sleep, then it is better to look towards mesh nebulizers or ultrasonic ones, they can be tilted almost 180 degrees (just when the child is in a supine position), but the price is also They are completely different, not to mention a more complex design that requires maintenance.

The travel nebulizer is easy to take with you (we are traveling)

There are only 2 disadvantages and both are insignificant:

  • Intermittent operation (20 minutes on, 40 minutes off), which its larger brothers do not have. The same stationary CompAir NE-C28 can work for hours. But, when a nebulizer is bought for a child, then why should it work for more than 5-10 minutes every few hours, not a clinic.
  • Low productivity, half that of the C28. On the other hand, you will just have to sit a little longer.

Before this model, we bought an Omron CompAir C20, but it’s better not to buy it, even though it is more compact than the C24 (350 grams). Really got it. Its nebulizer chamber is basically a non-functional design. That is, it is useless to even change it, everything will be the same. Everyone suffers with her, she doesn’t spray the medicine. Or it sprays, but you have to “pray” on it, God forbid it shakes or tilts a little. Although this doesn’t always help, the aerosol just stops coming out and that’s it, you start rinsing, turning the bumper (the blue thing inside), dancing around with a tambourine. The reviews on the official website are all bad. Omron came out with an unsuccessful model, good, the rest are normal.

Macholda inhaler

Surely, you came across him back in the USSR. It's a glass thing where aroma oil is poured. Moreover, you can then put it in a glass with hot water, or you can do without it. Machold inhalers are now rarely sold in pharmacies, but at least I found them online in Moscow. I still have that Soviet one left, my age. The differences between them are minor; they have slightly changed shape and the modern one has a container for oil.

The inhaler is not always called a Machold inhaler, but the meaning is the same. Pour in the oil and breathe in the vapor.

P.S. The combination of a portable nebulizer + Machold inhaler is very compact for travel and, most importantly, cheap. And in order not to break the glass inhaler, you can put it in a glasses case or something similar.
