Lg g3 s how to make landscape orientation. Phone LG G3: description, specifications, prices, reviews. Examples of taking pictures of the front camera

- direct competitors of G3 are already being sold with might and main, and we, in turn, have already managed to study them in detail. "G-Three" has just been officially presented, and deliveries to stores should begin in late June or even early July. The approach is wise: the company's engineers manage to study the weaknesses of competitors and prevent the same mistakes in their product - a quarter-long time reserve allows you to do this. In addition, LG, like most other manufacturers, prefers to update the older model once a year - unlike, for example, Sony, which releases a new flagship every six months.

It is important to understand that LG engineers are not updating the device for "show" - they really correct the shortcomings of the predecessor, and we will mention this more than once during thorough testing. The G2 was good. Not even that: he was very good - no one expected that he would turn out like that. And LG G3, in turn, turned out to be even more interesting, and it was clear even from the announcement. Now that you are intrigued and impatient, you can start getting to know the successor to the G2.

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

Do you know why the author of this material at one time refused to buy such a good and pleasant LG G2? Failed plastic, glossy and very easily soiled back panel... As a whole, an adult device cannot leave such, as they say, look & feel. Everything inside him is great, but whatever one may say, the smartphone has to be taken in hand - and it was at the very moment when the G2 was in his hands, a clear understanding came that the gadget was not perfect. The rear panel is probably the first thing on the list of changes from the designers of the G3.

Meet LG's new flagship G3

The "back" here is still plastic, but with a much more pleasant surface finish. There is not even a trace of gloss left - the panel is embossed, textured, and feels almost like real metal to the touch. The main advantage of the material used is its excellent oleophobic properties. The smartphone does not lose its presentation, no matter how much the owner touches it. Fingerprints do not remain on the panel, but even if it gets a little dirty, you can literally clean it of dirt in one motion.

LG G3 - official photo

The layout of the G3's controls is the same as that of its predecessor, not typical for Android smartphones. The physical power / lock and volume keys are located on the rear panel, under the lens of the main camera. The location for the amateur - it's good that the programmers have implemented the ability to turn on the device without pressing the appropriate key. It is called KnockCode, and we talked about it in a separate article. Recall that you can exit the "sleep" mode by tapping on the screen. The option is not new - it moved from G2. It is still better to put the smartphone in your pocket with the display facing you in order to avoid accidental pressing of the hardware keys.

LG G3 - back panel vs. LG G2 back (right)

The main area of the bezel is occupied by a new ultra-clear display with a diagonal of 5.46 inches. The bezels around it are still very thin, so the smartphone is much more compact than other models with screens of similar sizes. Despite the thin bezels, during the operation of the device, erroneous touches of the display with the palm of your hand do not occur. There are no hardware keys on the front panel - all buttons are touch-sensitive, they are located directly on the display.

LG G3 - Power and volume keys on the back

LG engineers failed to repeat the trick of the magicians from Samsung, who increased the diagonal of the Galaxy Note 3 display, practically without changing its dimensions relative to its predecessor. The G3 feels a little more elongated compared to the G2, with an increase of eight millimeters in length. However, it is quite convenient to use the device. Fortunately, the weight remained at an acceptable level - 149 grams versus 143 for its predecessor, and the thickness has completely decreased - from 9.5 mm to 8.9 mm. Thanks to the smooth, streamlined shapes, the smartphone seems even slimmer than it actually is.

LG G3 - bezel versus LG G2 bezel (right)

The SlimPort interface (micro-USB 2.0 + video output in one connector) and a universal audio jack for connecting a wired headset are placed on the bottom end. On the top is an infrared port. Two microphones, with the help of which the active noise cancellation system is implemented, are placed on vertical edges. A metal-styled edging runs along all the ends of the case.

LG G3 - sides

The "back" of the device is removable. Under it is a 3000 mAh battery and slots for micro-SIM and microSD located one above the other.

LG G3 without back panel

We have no complaints about the assembly and appearance of the device. The gadget looks strict and attractive - what the flagship needs. During testing, we did not find any backlash, even when checking for curl and kink, we did not see anything embarrassing or suspicious.

- a very exciting novelty. She, called the most technologically advanced by fans of the brand, has several trump cards at once. The first is a bright screen with an impressive Quad HD resolution. It's big, big, and the fresh LG G3 has made it into the league of tablet phones. Although the manufacturer insists that the gadget is exactly a superphone. The second trump card is great camera with laser image autofocus and double-LED flash. Although why are we so outright revealing all the cards? To begin with, we suggest playing a game or two. You will learn about other advantages of the LG G3 in our review.

In the first lines, I would like to note the colossal work of the Koreans aimed at modernizing the LG G2 smartphone. It is he who is considered the predecessor of the LG G3. Logically, the novelty is an improved "two". However, there are so many changes in it that there is probably no point in comparing gadgets (but we will do it anyway). They differ both externally and internally.

LG G3 is a large-caliber smartphone. It has a bright 5.5-inch screen with a record resolution, an excellent camera with laser autofocus and dual LED flash, a capacious 3000 mAh battery. And it is also stuffed with software proprietary features. LG has turned out to be a worthy flagship, which outperforms its very successful competitors in a number of parameters.

Design and display

Usually, any review starts with dimensions. Our review of the LG G3 is no exception, because the dimensions and weight of the LG G3 are key to its ergonomics. If you try to compare the device with the predecessor model, it turns out that it is much larger. It is understandable, because the screen diagonal has increased. This is no longer 5.2 inches, like the LG G2, but a full 5.5 inches.

The dimensions of the new items are 74.6 x 146.3 x 8.9 mm. Squeezing into the hierarchy of Korean competitors, it sits somewhere between the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Yes, the body of the LG G3 is large for a smartphone, but not for a 5.5-inch phablet. Moreover, since the frames around the screen in the model are very narrow, and the body itself has a beveled shape, the gadget is as compact as possible for its class. And keep it comfortable.

The device weighs 149 grams. We agree that this is not much for the dimensions of the LG G3. To make the smartphone lightweight thanks to the plastic case. Surprised that we are talking about plastic? Surely many expected to find metal in the flagship.

The Rear Key concept emerged in the minds of the creators of the LG G3 after analyzing the results of user surveys. The fact is that the larger the device, the more difficult it is to use its side buttons, and also the easier it is to drop it from your hands. This is why the single Rear Key control unit on the back of the 5.5-inch smartphone is a great brand innovation.

But in reality it is polycarbonate covered with a special metallized film. Outwardly, it is very similar to brushed metal, which is a plus. Other pluses and minuses of this solution include light weight, good signal reception, and practicality. In addition, in winter, in cold weather, plastic does not burn with cold, and it also does not heat up under prolonged load, which the smartphone will be exposed to.

The manufacturer did not forget to throw his Knock Code chip into the flagship. Its essence is that you can unlock your smartphone with a personal combination of taps on the screen. Conveniently, however, many consider Knock Code to be empty show-offs.

The developers have simplified the interface of the LG G3 to the impossible. They have combined many similar programs into single packages. For example, the Notebook, QuickMemo and Memo applications have been reunited under one QuickMemo + program.
And also respect and respect to the Koreans for the fact that they made it possible to remove the preinstalled software from the system without root rights.

Camera LG G3

The main camera of the LG G3 is the pride of the manufacturer. It uses a 13-megapixel module with 1 / 3.06 ”aperture and improved OIS.

Bonus - laser focusing. This is the world's first flagship with this kind of technology.

What did the Koreans want to achieve by introducing it into a novelty? Of course, market success.

The resolution of the LG G3 camera is not the highest, but there is an improved optical stabilization system, the matrix captures more light. Focusing in the model is laser, and the camera works very quickly. Pictures only benefit from this

Indeed, the LG G3 should appeal to amateurs mobile photography, in particular, also because the smartphone has a double flash, which is necessary to correct the color temperature.
Below you can see what the guys from the Web managed to capture on the device camera:

Camera test - sample shots

The front camera in the new product is also good. This is a standard 2 megapixel, but its matrix is characterized by a higher pixel size than competitors (1.4 um compared to 1.12 um for the same "space" S5). The manufacturer claims that this gives excellent footage when shooting in low light conditions.
In addition, the LG G3 has an interesting implementation of gesture recognition technology. The user clenches his hand into a fist - and in two or three seconds there is a ready selfie.
You can still switch between the main and front cameras with a simple swipe.

Smartphone acoustic capabilities

The LG G3 has broken through far ahead in acoustic capabilities. The new flagship sounds much louder than the LG G Pro 2, known in the circles of music lovers. It uses a speaker of the same power - 1 W, but it is possible to double the volume if necessary. Although, to be honest, competitive Htc one gives odds to our hero in sound quality, but in terms of volume level LG G3 is steeper than the Taiwanese flagship.

The LG G3 sounds good in headphones. By the way, the company has improved the player programmatically. Therefore, the smartphone will be an excellent option for those who often listen to music.

Autonomous work

The LG G3 D855 is powered by a 3000mAh battery, just like the LG G2. For comparison: Sony Xperia Z2, one of the smartphone's competitors, has a larger battery - 3200 mAh. But the Koreans made a replaceable design.

The autonomy of the LG G3 is not bad. While it is understandable that the QHD display calls for compromises. Autonomy is one of them. Under the same operating conditions, modern Android phablets live about the same amount of time - daylight hours. The LG G3 was able to last around nine hours with very heavy use. He, like his brother LG G2, was able to defend the status of himself long-lived smartphone on Android OS.
The LG G3 boasts wireless charging capability. True, you will have to additionally purchase an optional charger. There is information that with it the smartphone will be fully charged in 4.5 hours, up to 50% - in 2 hours 45 minutes. In the standard way, LG G3 is 100% satiated in 3 hours, and half satisfies its appetite in an hour.

conclusions

The fresh LG G3 is a continuation of the G2 tradition, competing with the Sony Xperia Z2, Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. The gadget turned out to be cool, and in almost everything. He further strengthened the positive brand image.

Of course, if you wish, examining and analyzing a smartphone, you can find something to complain about, but only in trifles. For example, why is the LG G3 case not protected from water, which is now very popular with Sony, Samsung and other companies? In addition, we do not see a fingerprint scanner in it. What? Don't you need it? That's the same!

The manufacturer, praising its flagship on the eve of its appearance on the market, calling its design super stylish, the screen super sharp, the camera with a laser sight super smart, did not lie to us. And he also added a lot of super-useful software tricks to it, promising to make the user's life easy and carefree. So the LG G3 is really super.

I can call myself so old that I remember when LG in terms of smartphones was doing very mediocre, and now everything is straight forward and promising. And this did not happen overnight, it was preceded by many successful models. The fact is that even a manufacturer who makes very mediocre devices gets something useful from time to time. But, more often than not, this is where it all ends. LG began to grow, it seems to me, with the Nexus 4. At that moment, many were skeptical about changing the manufacturer of the reference line of smartphones on Android, but it came out very good and it is still incredibly stylish.

After him there were, good line L and others. In general, the strategy was chosen correctly and today, after the start of sales of the new flagship smartphone G3, in some countries it is selling better than the strongest of this market. And all because LG is not trying to balance on the brink, releasing flagships, it seems, but not trying to do something unusual. LG wanted and made both the G2 and G3 unique in many ways. In this case, we got a 2K display (QHD), and LG was the first to release a smartphone with it among the A-brands. Who needs it - this is the second question. Also, the focusing system has changed significantly, the new product is not just software improvements, but an IR sensor that focuses almost instantly. Also, the G3 is one of the seemingly three smartphones on the market that can be purchased with 3 GB of RAM.

Design and ergonomics

I'll start with the case. He, like in the second generation, is plastic. I don't know why, but the manufacturer focuses on the fact that plastic here imitates metal. Several layers are applied on top of ordinary plastic, including the last one - ribbed. But, in fact, this is exactly plastic, and we see all kinds of imitations all the time, so I didn't quite understand why focus on such trifles. The only thing is that it was this texture of the plastic that made many speculate whether the smartphone would be metal, after its first photos appeared on the Internet.

The case is now disassembled, although if you try, you can disassemble the G2 too. However, despite this, the assembly, it seems to me, has become even better. My G2 was monolithic and there were no complaints about it at all, however, many complained about creaks and backlash. This is not the case in the G3. I twisted the smartphone, squeezed and tested it for rigidity and I can't say anything bad. Unlike Sony's monolithic Z2, the G3 doesn't flex with the same amount of effort. I am also glad that the plastic is not as glossy as in its predecessor and does not collect fingerprints as well. It is much more pleasant to hold in your hands.

LG is almost the only one to continue the trend of decreasing bezels around the display. This year the SGS5 and HTC One M8 picked up something that some didn't like. In G3, the display area is 72% of the front side, which is a lot. There are practically no frames on the sides and it is striking. As before, this result was achieved by transferring the volume control keys and locking the display from the sides to the back.

At the back, as in the G2, there is a volume rocker, inside which is a display lock button with an LED. Squeezing the lower one starts the camera from the locked state, the upper one - QuickMemo. I am glad that it is possible to reconfigure this key. Also on the back is a 13MP main camera, flash and IR sensor for fast focusing. At the bottom of the back cover there is a slot for the speaker, which sounds rather mediocre compared to the competition. Especially when compared to the Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One of the first and second generations.

Under the back cover there is a battery, a slot for a memory card and a SIM card. By the way, the back cover of the G3 has a built-in Qi-standard wireless charging module, while the smartphone is quite thin - 8.8 mm.

By the way, yes, in the new generation, unlike the G2, you can replace the battery on the go, add memory if the built-in is not enough and replace the cover if it gets scratched. Practical.

On the front side there is a 5.5 ″ display, an earpiece, a 2.1 MP front camera and a manufacturer's logo on the bottom.

On the upper side there is an infrared port and a microphone for noise cancellation, on the bottom there are connectors for a headset and for a MicroUSB cable.

In the case, I was pleased with almost everything: the design is attractive, the assembly is of high quality, the infrared port for controlling the equipment has not gone anywhere, besides, now you can insert a memory card. Unfortunately, the G3 didn’t come with a moisture protection like the SGS5 and Z2, which would be very helpful.

Display

Compared to the G2, the display has grown from 5.2 ″ to 5.46 ″. Besides, the resolution has also increased - up to QHD (2560x1440). With such a diagonal and resolution, the pixel density is an incredible 538 ppi. And now, attention, the question: "Why?" Not that I was old-fashioned or afraid of changes, but I see no reason to do more than Full HD resolution on such a diagonal. For tablets, it is more than understandable, but in a smartphone, it seems to me, this is only a rise in price and an increase in energy consumption. At LG's presentation, they showed how pixels become distinguishable when a specific area of the screen is enlarged, but the human eye is not able to zoom the picture, and when viewing an image from the closest possible distance, the pixels are not visible even at a density of 440 dpi. Well, lano, the main thing is that LG made such a display the first among the A-brands.

But for me, the main thing was different, how the display behaves at different angles. And, fortunately, it did not take over the problems of the G2 and Nexus 5 - the blacks became much richer, and the viewing angles were almost maximized. Excluding AMOLED matrices, which have them a priori, only HTC One is better. That is, in all parameters that are clearly visible to the eye and affect the user experience, the G3's display has improved in quality. Speaking of brightness, it is not the highest among competitors, but there is enough to use the device even on a sunny day - the information is discernible. But the unpleasant moment - excessive software sharpness of the text, which is expressed in light contours around the fonts, it did not interfere with me reading from the display, but it seems that something is wrong with the matrix. It is good that this effect is observed only in the text, perhaps it will be removed.

Camera

The matrix has not changed significantly, the resolution remains the same - 13 MP, and the size - 1 / 3.06 ”. Both the front and rear cameras are made by Sony. The aperture ratio of both is far from the best in the class - 2.4. And now for the good. To begin with, the optical stabilization module was improved and called OIS +. The image is now stabilized 20% better. On the eye I would not say that it is noticeable. But what is immediately noticeable is improved focusing. The stated focusing time is comparable to some other smartphones on the market - 0.267 sec. However, here this indicator corresponds to reality as much as possible, because focusing is carried out using an IR sensor located near the camera.

When you are in camera mode, you see every now and then how the focus points are triggered on various objects. It seems like it happens instantly. And to take a picture, you just need to touch the screen. But it is not so much the focusing speed that is important as its accuracy - the focus never misses.

The quality of the images obtained is very decent. I can't say which is the best, but it is practically on the same level with SGS5. And in low light, the G3 behaves even better, both with image quality and with focus.

Sample photos

The video is recorded in a maximum resolution of 4K (3840x2160 pixels) with a frame rate of 30 per second. It is possible to record SloMo videos in HD resolution at 120 frames per second. Unfortunately, one gets the impression that the latter mode does not work quite correctly, because the real resolution is lower, although 1280x720 pixels are displayed in the properties. I hope they will correct it.

Sample Videos

In general, I was satisfied with the camera. The only thing that will not please power users is that the camera interface has reduced all sorts of manual settings, now everything is as simple as possible. Just like the iPhone. Almost.

Specifications and software

If in G2 everything was in order in terms of hardware, and the software often let down, then in the new product everything was corrected. We slightly upgraded the hardware and heavily doped all the software. Many expected that the processor in the novelty would be a new one - Snapdragon 805, however, there is installed here, although it is also fresh, but the 801st c 330 Adreno. Why is that bad? Like nothing. In theory, it seemed that the processor would be strained in heavy games, such as MC4, because the display resolution is huge, but this did not happen. The interface is also fast, in general, there were no questions. The only thing is heating, it was not shared anywhere. The smartphone still often does not allow the display brightness to be raised to maximum due to overheating.

Outwardly, this is not so noticeable, but the smartphone knows better. RAM - 2 GB, if the smartphone has 16 GB of storage, and 3 GB, if it has 32. There is a slot for a Micro SD memory card.

The battery capacity is 3000 mAh. The autonomy in a smartphone is good, generally speaking, but in fact, there is no smartphone with good autonomy on the market. Or almost not, I have not seen such. The last few days I have been walking a lot and planning a route in Google Maps, no device, even iPad included, lives a day. However, if you use it as a phone: call, write messages and mail, sometimes re-read social media, take several photos / videos a day, and so on, it will last all day and by the evening there will be another 30 percent charge.

  • Battery: Li-Pol battery 3000 mAh.

As I said, the software has been finalized. Almost the latest version of Android OS is installed here - 4.4.2, on top of which is the proprietary LG interface, which has become flatter. Its design has become much more pleasant, it is clear that at least the designer worked on it. Everything is designed in one style, there are no menus or standard applications that clearly stand out from the design. Moreover, there are certain concepts followed in all the pre-installed apps. For example, they all have different color themes, this is done so that, after a while, the user is visually oriented in which application he is. Branded chips have been preserved, such as Knock Code, LG Backup, Security Assistant, and more. But there were also new solutions. For example, the keyboard has smart predictions and is designed so that you don't have to take your thumbs off the input field. You can also change the height of the keyboard block. There are several new services, like Smart Notice, which will notify you about any events, like Google Now, there is LG Health, Smart Tips, which gives smart advice when using and more. There is only one downside to all of this - jams still happen. For example, in the application there are dialers, sometimes with simple scrolling, and so on.

Price in Moscow: an average of 24-30 thousand rubles A version with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash memory is mainly supplied to Russia. I bought myself the maximum version: there is 3 GB of memory and 32 GB of flash memory. Here is a lineup of color options.
By the way, I didn’t look and quite by accident ordered the version in the "gold" design, but in practice it turned out that this is not a big deal: in the sun the phone looks like steel (and looks very stylish), and in dim lighting the color looks more like light beige. In terms of equipment, what can I say? The package bundle is actually top-end, well, the resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels attracts attention - this has not yet been seen in smartphones. However, we, of course, will see whether it is necessary at all or not. Equipment The box has become much more spectacular (compared to LG G2), and it is painted in the color of the smartphone itself. The set includes: smartphone, battery, USB-microUSB cable, power adapter, wired plug-in headset with additional attachments, brochure.
Appearance and features Outwardly, the LG G3 already looks noticeably more stylish and elegant than the rustic LG G2 with its "soapy" Samsung-style design. There is even less bezel around the display, and the bottom insert, ends and back cover are made of plastic with a cunning design like metal. Initially it really looks like it's a metal case. It's plastic, though. The back part looks very impressive - a metal-like lid (plastic with a metalized texture melted into the surface) - well, the new design of the famous "G button" and two volume keys attracts attention. Here is a close-up of a button with keys.
At first it seems that the cover will scratch quickly, especially since it is not metal. However, practice shows that the surface there is quite stable: I specially carried my smartphone in a bag with all sorts of keys for several days - no scratches appeared on the lid. At the bottom: microUSB port, headset and microphone jack.
The back cover is removable; under it are the battery compartment, SIM card slots and memory cards.
SIM card and memory card are located in slots one above the other - saving space. The same is done in the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Well, this smartphone is surrounded by Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5.
The build and materials leave a very good impression: the smartphone looks great. And, despite the fact that the back cover is removable, it fits very tightly, does not walk anywhere and does not creak. In terms of dimensions - in my opinion, this is what you need: the display, on the one hand, is quite large, but on the other hand, it does not look like a "shovel", as, for example, in the LG G Flex. Also, by the dimensions of the case, it fits comfortably in the hand. Display It uses an IPS-matrix (True HD-IPS +) with a resolution of 2560 × 1440, which is unique for smartphones. The density of pixels per inch is 538. The display is covered with protective Gorilla Glass 3 and an effective oleophobic coating that prevents dirt. The colors of the display are rich, but very natural and not flashy. The viewing angles seem to be decent, but when the smartphone is tilted vertically or horizontally, a slight drop in brightness is noticeable, which I did not like: for example, this is not observed on the Samsung Galaxy S5. The brightness here is decent, but the range of values that are comfortable for me personally is from 70 to 100. In normal lighting, I set it to 70-80%, in sunlight - to 100%. However, in direct sunlight, the display behaved well: it was visible no worse than on the Galaxy S5 display. I didn't like the work of automatic brightness adjustment: it obviously underestimated the brightness, even when the parameter was set to 100%. On the Galaxy S5, auto-tuning is clearly better. Now about the inconceivable clarity and so on. Yes, the image quality on the display leaves a very good impression: it is very clear, fonts, images look just fine on it. But to see the difference with FullHD at the same time, you will have to try very hard. There really is a difference, but only with a very careful study. I do not know how much this is conveyed in the photo - try to compare (clickable). Left - Galaxy S5, right - LG G3.

But there is no WOW effect here: if ordinary user not to say that the two smartphones have different resolutions higher, he will not notice it. Moreover, here we are talking about "Android", which scales the image at different resolutions in about the same way, so only by the clarity of the letters you can understand that the resolutions are still different. Here when displaying photos big size- yes, the difference is already more noticeable. It is also noticeable when outputting 4K clips. But even then if you know what to look for there. As a result, I am ready to confirm the thought that experts expressed even before the smartphone entered the market: QUAD HD resolution is not at all necessary and many people simply will not notice much difference compared to FullHD when using it. And then why produce such displays that also eat up the battery, like an inspector at a funeral? However, let's talk about the battery again. Well, here, by the way, compliments to the Android system: no matter how manufacturers are perverted with display resolutions, the system scales everything normally at the steepest resolution values. Smartphone operation At initial setup device, the smartphone offers to immediately set the so-called Knock Code - this is a set of touches to predefined parts of the screen to unlock. Something like digital password, but based on touching certain zones (four). You set the number of touches yourself. There can be from three to eight.

Also, the G3 immediately offers to choose a color and a set of on-screen buttons. (Which I really, really like about LG.) And here you can put up to five on-screen buttons, where notifications, quick notes, widgets and double windows are also available to enable notifications.

Well, here's the main display with widgets, folders and icons.

One of the innovations here is Smart Notice.

These smart notifications are customizable. They can relate to new contacts, various reminders, and so on. The thing, in my opinion, is not very necessary and is unlikely to be in demand.

A special desktop (switchable) with the LG Health widget (recording user activity) and smart tips, where in fact just three videos about using new features are found.

Second desktop.

By the way, if you do not enable "loopback" of desktops, then when you try to scroll to the left of the last desktop, the image is slightly stretched, like a rubber one. It looks very funny.

Notification area.

The set and order of the quick setting icons is, of course, editable.

Applications installed on the system.

List of recently started tasks.

By clicking on the "Dual Window" button, you can select two applications that will simultaneously be on the screen.

For example, a browser and maps.

Setting up desktops and home screens.

Lock window.

Desktop themes are customizable: both the appearance and the icons change there. For example, the Paradise theme.

And here's another very popular topic.

Keyboard The keyboard is advanced here and has many interesting features. I especially love the customization options here - they are really very flexible, you can even adjust the keyboard height.

It is also possible to add another key with an arbitrary character to the right of the space - I added a comma there, which I really missed.

Also, on the lower keys, with a long press, you can select a character from the character part.

Here you can also enter words by sliding on the desired keys - this mode is called Path Input. For word substitution, additional dictionaries are available for each of the languages. Also, the keyboard can be divided into two parts for thumb control and grouped on the left or right side of the screen for one-handed typing. In general, an excellent keyboard, I really liked it. Phone app Favorite contacts.

Incoming call.

Conversation with the subscriber.

The phone application works well: the sound is loud, clear, the subscribers heard me without any problems. The noise canceling system when talking in noisy environments really helps to better distinguish my voice - we checked it. Contacts, like some other system applications, can be turned into a mini-application using a special icon - the so-called QSlide. These are windowed applications that can be moved around the screen, resized, and so on.

SMS / MMS SMS / MMS service.

Messages menu. As you can see, very interesting possibilities are available here.

Scheduling a message to send is very helpful.

Spam blocking.

Messages, like phone calls, can come in the form of small pop-up windows (this is configurable).

Browser I tried to figure out if such permission for reading sites in a browser gives anything. Compared to Galaxy S5. Yes, it does, the letters are seen more clearly, the layout in a column of 933 pixels on this smartphone is noticeably more comfortable to read than on the Galaxy S5.

Albums Photos on such a display, of course, look just great.

Menu for working with images.

Collage creation.

Image editing.

Audio Convenient program for working with the audio library.

Sort by albums.

Playback.

The equalizer works well, but it affects the sound level - it becomes quieter.

Custom equalizer setting.

From exotic - you can adjust the tone and speed.

Listening menu.

Now about the sound quality. The manufacturer claims that it uses a one watt speaker provided by the built-in amplifier. The sound is really louder than that of the LG G2, while it is quite high quality and clear. The speaker (only one) is located on the back cover, and when the phone is lying, for example, on a table, the sound is slightly muffled. I listened to the sound in the supplied QUADBeat 2 headphones - quite a C grade. The range is fig, everything is very flat, and even with the help of the equalizer, a normal sound cannot be achieved. I listened to it with good headphones (Monster Diesel). Decently, a four. Quite good bass, there is volume, but rather poor highs. However, here the equalizer just helped to improve the sound. Video Rollers are played here up to 4K, and, interestingly, even with software decoding, a 4K video is played without jerks. Well, the quality is appropriate, excellent.

Weather Weather application.

File manager File manager with a breakdown by file types.

Clock World clock, timer, stopwatch, alarm clock. Convenient, beautiful application.

Universal remote remote control It is necessary to select the manufacturer and type of device. Of the types, only TVs, digital TV receivers and audio devices are supported.

I set it up on my TV - it seemed to work.

But he does not make a special impression: he does not understand media players, projectors, and so on, so true universality cannot be achieved here. Notes Service of notes: text, pictures and so on.

Office application An application that allows you to view some types of documents.

By the way, it works quite well.

Reading I installed the AlReader application (I now only use it for Android) to see how to read books on such a display. Expectedly excellent: the text is perfectly readable even with a strong decrease.

Gps GPS / GLONASS starts quickly, they are caught very confidently, there were no problems with navigation.

Games Despite this resolution, there were no problems even with "heavy" graphics games: everything was played smoothly, without jerks. And the quality is good.

Settings The settings here are divided into four tabs: Networks, Sound, Display and General. Working with them, of course, is much more convenient than with Galaxy settings S5, where, in my opinion, they were completely clever with dividing into groups. Here, as in the LG G2, there are a great many different interesting settings that allow you to very flexibly adjust the smartphone for yourself, but of course we will not study all of them, we will go through only on the tops and the most interesting moments.

Quiet mode is a very useful thing.

Screen lock types. From exotic - face control and the already reviewed Knock Code.

From the lock screen, you can quickly jump to a note or camera.

Calling a double window by clicking the "Return" button.

Smart smartphone cleaning.

Setting up backup: it is especially convenient here that the system is able to save both the look of the desktop and application data.

Camera The camera interface is simple and user-friendly.

Basic settings in the form of pictograms.

Shooting modes.

Well, now we look at examples of photos. (All photos are clickable.) A very dark corridor. ISO 350 (noise is already coming through), shutter speed 1/12. BB knocked down a little, but there was no stir.
Also a dark corner. In general, everything is good here.

Very natural colors and excellent quality.

Back home in natural light.

It's with HDR.
This is without HDR.

Clarity of text.
An evening with HDR.

Very cloudy and evening. The conditions are difficult, and the quality, in my opinion, is just excellent.

Later still.
It’s quite night. At night, of course, on such a matrix - specifically floats and makes noise, but nevertheless you can live. For a smartphone - generally good, in my opinion. By the way, there is a built-in noise control - you can see its work in the photo below. The picture is noisy, of course, "lathers".

An example of shooting video in 4K. When viewing, set the maximum quality and pay attention to the detail. I think she's just gorgeous. I will say right away, in my opinion - this is the best camera from everything that I have seen in smartphones. (Excluding Nokia Lumia 1020, which, for a number of reasons, stands apart.) There are two focusing systems - laser (active) and traditional contrast. Laser focusing works as follows: a sensor placed next to the camera sends out a lot of laser beams, which are reflected and returned back, after which the system, based on this data, produces accurate focusing. It works really very quickly, and the camera is aimed very accurately. In addition, if the result of focusing on several points does not suit you, you can simply poke your finger at the desired point, after which the corresponding focus will be made and the picture will be taken. So the first moment - Fast and accurate focusing. The second point is the dual-axis stabilization, which really works very well: I look at pictures with shutter speeds even at 1/12 (without the stabilizer at 1/80, frame blur can already appear) - there is no blur. And here you can already take one frame of each scene (in LG Flex I took 3-5 of them, and there was a wild percentage of defects), without fear that there will be a marriage. Out of hundreds of photos taken during the test series, I had no marriage at all. And there was shooting, including with a very bad conditions Lighting The third point is the work of HDR. How does HDR (High Dynamic Range) work on most modern smartphones? The smartphone takes three frames with different exposures, then "glues" them together. It takes time - usually three seconds. Here you expose shooting in HDR - and it is no different in speed from normal shooting. But you really get an HDR shot with well-defined shadows in contrasting lighting, so I really liked this camera. I won't lie, the Galaxy S5 has an excellent camera too (and it can do HDR in the same mode), but here the camera is still more abrupt - first of all, with faster focusing. Battery life Some problems were expected with the battery life here. The LG G2 had excellent battery life - the best of almost any flagship. In the LG G3, the battery remains almost the same, and the display resolution has increased markedly. And the fool understands that such a display from a battery of the same capacity will live less. In LG, however, they assured that new algorithms are applied here with power consumption, so it will live at least as long, and among the reviews of the first users, the battery life was criticized by everything. Internet. Wireless types of communication are turned on, the brightness level is set to a comfortable 70%, the page is reloaded in the browser every half a minute. 7 hours 30 minutes. Sucks, the LG G2 has almost 11 hours. Video. Wireless communications are turned off, the brightness level is set to a comfortable 80%, in a player with hardware decoding, a TV-resolution series is spinning in a loop. 8 hours 30 minutes. The LG G2 has 15 hours and 30 minutes. In general, compared to the previous model, the figures are pretty shitty, almost two times less. However, the smartphone quite survived until the evening even with active use. Of course, he will not live for two days (in active mode), but for one day he lives normally. Moreover, I carried a Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G3 with me for two days, and I used them alternately - that is, I gave them about the same load. So, in the evening they had a very similar charge level. So the conclusion is the following: the smartphone does not set any records, unlike the LG G2, but the battery even for such a screen is enough for one active working day, there is no tragedy here. Well, let me remind you that there is a removable battery, so nothing prevents you from purchasing a spare one and carrying it with you - for every firefighter. Performance Some observers wrote that the system cannot cope with this display - they say, lags were noticeable when scrolling through desktops and windows with applications. I didn’t notice anything like that - everything works smoothly and smartly. AnTuTu gave 29 666 according to tests - in my LG G2 it gave 26 716. And here you also need to manage to work with such a resolution.

Purely by eye - there are no problems with performance here, everything works quickly and efficiently. Accessories For this smartphone, you can purchase wireless charging LG WCD-100. I already ordered it, but it hasn’t arrived yet.

As well as for the LG G2, this smartphone is sold with a tricky QuickCircle case of the corresponding color, which when closed in a round window can show special applications.

I bought such a cover for LG G2 - it is still lying around in a drawer, I do not like covers. Observations at work and conclusions I, as I said, do not have a particularly great experience with this smartphone yet. The only thing that I noticed during testing was that under a noticeable load, the back cover in the area of the camera heats up, but not at all to very annoying values. So, warmed up. Now my conclusions regarding this device. I really liked the smartphone. Liked appearance, excellent image quality, excellent text clarity (however, not to say that the LG G2 had any complaints about this), there is very good software with big amount flexible settings, well, and the best camera I've seen on android smartphones. But one of the undoubted advantages - a very high-quality and clear display - is also a disadvantage, because with such a display on a 3000 mAh battery, the smartphone, of course, lives much less than the LG G2, but I still think that the developers should release this smartphone in FullHD version. Yes, then it would not be that much different from the LG G2 (although there would still be many differences there), but it would be a very balanced device. In this case, it seems that the QUAD HD resolution was made more for marketing reasons. Although, I repeat, yes, it does, the difference can be seen. But only if you know what to look for and take a close look. Nevertheless, I am not disappointed with my smartphone, now I will use it as the main phone and see what else, maybe, will come out. Sorry that, contrary to usual, I hurried to write review, but I really wanted to study it right away. And once I studied it, I need a review, the cat Bublik told me sternly.

Detailed testing of the new flagship of the Korean company

LG has once again updated its flagship smartphone from the top-end G series. The new flagship of the company was presented after all competitors had released their flagship solutions for the coming season on the market. By this time, we had already managed to get acquainted with the Samsung Galaxy S5, and with the Sony Xperia Z2, and even with the new incarnation of the HTC One, which received the ordinal index M8. All these top-end novelties are united by the fact that they run on the latest version of the Qualcomm hardware platform - the Snapdragon 801, which is currently the most powerful and advanced mobile devices on the world market. Each of the top novelties this season has some unusual feature, be it a fingerprint scanner, blood pressure meter or something else; there was something unique about the LG G3 as well. First of all, the new LG flagship boasts an unusual screen resolution: Quad HD is still a unique solution for smartphone screens. True, it is difficult to assert with complete certainty that such a resolution is a real necessity for a mass user, but such an unusual characteristic certainly attracts attention. The new flagship smartphone of the Koreans also has other differences - both unique (for example, the presence of laser focusing) and those found in previous models of the series, but in this case, they have undergone significant revision. In general, the changes are enough to investigate the new product in the most detailed way, which we will do today.

Contents of delivery

The LG G3 smartphone arrived at our editorial office in a catchy and large enough box made of solid cardboard with a golden lacquered lid. The box looks quite stylish, contains a minimum of necessary information on its surfaces, everything inside is also neat and thoughtful, which cannot be said about the configuration itself.

Unlike its eternal rival, LG firmly decided to adhere to minimalism, which is why all its flagship smartphones are equipped with only the most minimal set of accessories. This has gone back to the days of the first LG Optimus G, in which, to everyone's surprise, no headphones were found, and everyone got used to this by the release of the third flagship. Unfortunately, the equipment of the next top-end novelty of the Koreans is also extremely ascetic, which does not at all fit with the huge cost at which the company's new flagship smartphone is offered in retail. For 30 thousand rubles, customers could be pleased with some additional "goodies", especially since the new LG device supports wireless charging. However, there is nothing like this in the kit, there was only a charger (output current 1.8 A) and a Micro-USB connection cable.

It is worth mentioning an additional accessory made in the form of a book-case with a round-shaped window through which information from the smartphone screen is displayed in a special mode. For this shape of the window, the cover even received the corresponding name QuickCircle. The accessory, of course, is sold separately, and differs from the familiar analog from Samsung in that here the back cover acts only as a nozzle on the main cover of the smartphone, while the case Samsung cover The cover is installed instead of the main cover, completely replacing it on the device body.

Appearance and usability

The first thing to note: the new LG flagship, unfortunately, could not resist within the reasonable size, which, albeit with difficulty, corresponded to its predecessor. Unlike the LG G2, which was a large but still quite sleek pocket mobile device, the novelty crossed this invisible milestone, firmly taking its place among the "shovels". And the assurances of the company's representatives that with such a large screen the smartphone was able to keep the dimensions digestible for a human hand do not pass here. No, I couldn't. LG's new flagship is a real tablet phone, no matter how much the developers themselves would like to present the situation in a different way. The device turned out to be very large, although the narrowed edges and a small mass for such a huge size to some extent smooth out this impression. Still, it's a pity that the Koreans could not restrain themselves in this strange race - after all, their previous flagship came out as a device that was quite elegant in terms of dimensions, and nothing seemed to bode well for such an “explosive” further growth.

However, this question can only concern those who still see in a modern smartphone not a tablet, but a neat and miniature mobile assistant that fits in your average pocket. Those who have firmly decided to combine a smartphone and a tablet in one device will not find anything shocking here - after all, without exception, all top manufacturers in the new season have also significantly increased their flagship smartphones in size. When and at what point this race of gigantomania will stop, it already becomes completely incomprehensible, since the border of reasonable limits has long been overcome.

As for the design, it has remained essentially the same as in the LG G2, only the materials have changed. More precisely, not even the materials themselves - after all, the body was, and remains, plastic. However, this time, the developers have managed to give the plastic such an appearance that it cannot be distinguished from real metal at first glance. The back cover has added texture to look like a roughly sanded metal surface, and a wide shiny bezel that runs along the entire side perimeter looks like real steel. At least this is what the gray version of the smartphone looks like, which we tested. And yet there is no metal here, only high-tech spraying on plastic.

Due to this peculiar coating, the device turned out to be completely non-marking, and since its front glass has excellent grease-repellent properties, the new flagship significantly surpassed its predecessor in this matter: LG G2, on the contrary, was a completely glossy and very easily soiled device.

The back cover is removable, from which both the usual way of installing cards and a replaceable type of battery follow. In this regard, the new LG flagship stands out favorably against the background of modern solutions, in which either the battery is sealed, or the SIM card needs to be removed with a paper clip, or the memory card slot is not found. The LG G3 is in full order with this, everything looks the way it looked a few years ago in the vast majority of communicators: you can remove the cover, change the battery yourself, insert any memory card (up to 128 GB). Unless there is no slot for a second SIM-card, but this option is usually not found in flagships.

Both cards are located vertically one above the other, but unlike the SIM-card (Micro-SIM format), which is tightly supported by the rechargeable battery from below, the memory card can be easily removed and installed without removing the battery. On the opposite side, you can see a group of contacts connecting to contacts on the cover itself: the device supports wireless charging, a separate wireless charger has been released for it.

The very back surface of the smartphone contains the already familiar modern smartphones LG has a block of buttons, and next to it you can see a dual flash and a laser rangefinder. We will also talk about the laser installation for measuring the distance to the subject of photography in the corresponding section, everything is also clear with the flash, now many top devices are equipped with two multi-colored LEDs, but the button block has changed. We specially photographed it so that it became clear that none of the keys now stick out from the body. Recall that in all previous models (with the "rear" arrangement of the button block), the lock key protruded significantly and could have been accidentally pressed, especially if the smartphone was lying on some kind of crumbling surface - even the protective bumpers did not save. So this unusual block has undergone another improvement, this time everything has become almost perfect. However, the very option of placing buttons on the back of the smartphone remains controversial, not everyone liked it, many could not get used to it, so the opinions of users on this matter remain directly opposite.

The purpose of the buttons remains the same and quite standard: the central key fulfills the inclusion and locking of the smartphone, and the other two, above and below, are responsible for adjusting the volume. The extended capabilities of the block of hardware buttons provide additional functionality in control: a long hold of the upper button launches the Qmemo application, the lower one calls the camera from sleep mode, and a long press of the central button activates taking a photo or video.

There are no hardware buttons under the screen on the front panel, their role has long been played by virtual icons on the display - in some applications the strip with buttons can be removed, but in others it remains, taking up part of the working area of the screen. But it is possible to reorganize the number and order of buttons according to the user's taste.

In general, very little free space was left below the screen, and this is quite logical, since there are no hardware buttons there. Due to such narrow frames, the developers were able, as in the case of the previous flagship, to accommodate a larger screen than is usually the case for a case of this size with a traditional width.

Above the screen, the strip is also quite narrow, so that all the elements placed on it literally lined up in one line: the front camera peephole, sensors, an elongated earpiece grille, and here there is another useful element - an LED event indicator. The indicator dimly shines in various colors, notifying about the charging status and incoming events, its light is soft and unobtrusive. There is a separate subsection in the menu to adjust its tasks.

Both universal connectors - Micro-USB and headphone audio output (3.5 mm) - are located on one, bottom end, between them you can see the main microphone hole. The distance between the elements is sufficient so that you do not have to worry if both plugs are plugged into their jacks at the same time. It is gratifying that Micro-USB supports connection mode here external devices(OTG).

At the top, the space is discharged, there are only the eye of the infrared transmitter and the hole of the second microphone, which serves for noise reduction. The infrared port is, of course, primarily used to emulate the remote control - for this, the smartphone has preinstalled program called Quick Remote.

There are no plugs on the connectors of the smartphone, since the device is not protected from water and dust. The LG G3 also lacks a strap mount. As for the color variety of the new flagship, this time the Koreans went even further and painted the case in several colors for literally every taste. In Russian translation, their names are as follows: metallic black, silky white, shining gold, moon purple, red burgundy.

Screen

The LG G3 smartphone is equipped with an IPS sensor matrix. The screen dimensions are 68 × 121 mm, the diagonal is 5.5 inches, the resolution is 2560 × 1440 pixels. The display has received an extremely high resolution for a smartphone, called Quad HD. Such a parameter as the density of pixels per inch is here equal to 538 ppi - an unprecedented figure for smartphone displays. The bezels around the screen are quite thin: the developers claim that the display occupies 76% of the front surface of the smartphone.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment. The multitouch technology here allows you to process up to 10 simultaneous touches. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using a proximity sensor.

Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, carried out a detailed examination using measuring instruments. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - LG G3, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the LG G3 is even slightly darker (the brightness in the photos is 95 versus 102 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the LG G3 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS-type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass-air) with greatly different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, noticeably better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with the display of the white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 480 cd / m², the minimum - 10 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, which means, given the good anti-glare properties of the screen, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an excellent level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. There is an automatic brightness control according to the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker slot). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness, the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 10 cd / m2 (dark, but you can read), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets to 250 cd / m2 (normal), in a very bright environment (equivalent to bright daylight outdoors, but no direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to a maximum of 480 cd / m² (which is what you need). The brightness slider is 50% - the values are as follows: 10, 140 and 480 cd / m², at 0% - 10, 50 and 480 cd / m² (the logic is traced). In general, the automatic brightness adjustment function works adequately. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

IN this smartphone the matrix of the IPS type is used. Micrographs (if you look closely) show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen, and without tint inversion. For comparison, we present photographs in which the screens of LG G3 and Nexus 7 are displayed the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. The white field is perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And the test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are saturated on both screens. However, the saturation in the case of the LG G3 is clearly overestimated. As proof, we present a test photo with a smooth increase in saturation from bottom to top:

By the lack of visibility of horizontal stripes with maximum saturation, it can be determined that on the LG G3 screen the saturation is artificially increased (the color contrast is increased). In addition, in some of the images, it can be seen that the contour sharpness is also increased to some extent. Apparently, such image processing is performed in software at a very low level, since its result is visible in all tested programs that display raster images. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but the contrast on the LG G3's screen dropped noticeably due to a significant increase in black levels and a decrease in image brightness. And a white box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least five times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the LG G3, the brightness decreased a little more. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened strongly and acquires a violet or red-violet tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same for the screens!):

And from a different angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is imperfect, since in one corner the brightness of the black increases noticeably:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is not the highest - about 750: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 13 ms (7 ms on + 6 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 23 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points with equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. Indicator approximating power function is 2.28, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2. At the same time, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

This smartphone has a non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image. However, it seems that the brightness decreases noticeably only when the black field is displayed in full or almost full screen, therefore, most likely, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) approximately corresponds to the gamma curve of a static image. However, just in case, we carried out a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles - when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen.

The color gamut is almost equal to sRGB:

Note that the break at yellow dot indicates the presence of software processing for image output. The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components together:

As a result, visually clear (see note above) colors have natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly above 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of the absolute black body (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the smartphone can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is also permissible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include a very good oleophobic coating, no flicker and no air gap in the layers of the screen, sRGB color gamut and good color balance. The main disadvantage is the low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. The presence of non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image and the artificial increase in saturation and edge clarity, we cannot add to the pluses, but the mass consumer may even like such an improvement in the picture. Therefore, taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

LG G3 sounds louder than its predecessor, this is achieved due to a powerful speaker (1 W) connected to an amplifier. True, there is only one speaker here, and it is turned in the direction opposite to the user. The sound is really very, very loud, it remains clear in the entire frequency range, but the presence of low frequencies in it is not too noticeable. The sound outlet is located on the back so that the sound of the smartphone lying with the screen facing up is muffled as the speaker grill is covered by the table surface. In the conversational dynamics, the voice of a familiar interlocutor, timbre and intonation remain recognizable, making telephone conversations with the help of LG G3 is quite comfortable. In the settings of the standard audio player, it is possible to influence the sound quality using the preset equalizer values.

Camera

LG G3 is equipped with two digital camera modules with a resolution of 13 and 2.1 megapixels. The front camera takes pictures with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, video shoots in a resolution of 1080p. For shooting self-portraits, the capabilities of the front camera are more than enough, examples of test shots are presented below.

The main rear 13-megapixel camera is equipped with advanced optical image stabilization (OIS +), but the most interesting thing is that the smartphone also has laser focus. Like professional DSLRs, the LG G3 this technology used to measure the distance between the camera and the subject with a laser beam. It reportedly takes just 0.27 seconds to focus. When shooting in automatic mode, which is set by default, the photos are 4160 × 2240 (10 Mp), and at the maximum resolution the size of the photo is exactly the same 13 Mp: 4160 × 3120.

The camera control menu has been greatly simplified, although it cannot be said that the camera settings were poorly placed in previous LG smartphones. Previously, such a matrix of visual interactive squares was used, which, in general, was quite intuitive and easy to use. Nevertheless, in the new model, everything has been simplified even more: now there are only two stripes with pictograms, which are drawn smaller and not so clearly distinguishable in the bright sun.

The camera can shoot video in 1080p and UHD (4K) resolution, and there is also the ability to shoot videos in slow motion, which is standard for top smartphones. Those interested can download examples:

  • Movie # 1 (73 MB, 3840 × 2160)
  • Movie # 2 (53 MB, 1920 × 1080)
  • Movie # 3 (39 MB, 1280 × 720, 120 frames per second)

Examples of photos with our comments are presented below.

Excellent sharpness on the car, despite being in the shade.

In the background, the foliage merges a little only in the shade.

The noise in the shadows is not very strong and is well handled.

The color of the sky is very even.

Even if there is a sharpening on the wires, it is invisible. In the shadows, the camera does not do much worse than in the light.

The license plates of almost all cars in the picture are clearly distinguishable. The foliage in the background is finely worked out.

In terms of the combination of many parameters, this picture is quite comparable in quality to a good compact camera.

The dynamic range is wide enough, and good light sensitivity allows you to competently work out shadows.

Another example of good sharpness on all shots.

In low light, you can see the noise reduction, but it is very neat.

Text in daylight room and low light conditions, as well as with flash. In all cases, the camera manages the text well, only in the corners the sharpness drops slightly.
Close-up shooting in daylight room and low light, as well as with flash. In all cases, the camera handles well, perhaps a little worse in low light.

LG, having once learned how to create good cameras (in the LG G2), seems to have decided to slowly hone their skills. Since then, the cameras in her smartphones have turned out to be at least good, and sometimes even very good.

There is a feeling that LG, like Samsung's chief experimenter, also likes to experiment, but it does so carefully and tries not to touch areas where everything is already fine. In the case of the G3 camera, it was also not without experiments, the main one of which seems to be an attempt to squeeze the maximum out of the 13-megapixel module - it’s interesting to see what it can do, and why go further if the resource has not yet been exhausted?

As a rule, a picture on a smartphone screen looks much sharper than on a regular monitor, and even more so on the LG G3 screen. But, oddly enough, the pictures of the G3 on the monitor do not look much worse and upon closer examination they do not cease to pleasantly surprise.

Foreground and middle shots can almost always be explored in detail. Even in the distant shots, the details do not merge, but are worked out very carefully. The optics are doing well. Sharpness is uniform across the entire field of the frame, and only slightly falls at the edges. The sensor is good at not the simplest moments, and the program helps it a lot. Sometimes, looking at the shadows, you can grimace, bumping into a not quite straight line, forgetting that this is a smartphone camera, and not a cool compact. The pictures are so good that the eye starts to notice these little things. In fact, the noise control works perfectly, although some points betray its work. Sharping is practically absent, which is good news and once again confirms the high quality of optics.

Illumination ≈3200 lux. The camera is doing well.

Illumination ≈1400 lux. The situation is not changing.

Illumination ≈130 lux. The situation is still good, although you can already see the traces of the noise reduction.

Illumination ≈130 lux, flash. The flash improves the situation a little.

Lighting<1 люкс. В темноте можно различить лишь контуры предметов.

Lighting<1 люкс, вспышка. В данном случае вспышка и шумодав сработали не очень слаженно, поэтому резкость упала, хотя она вполне могла остаться высокой.

Remembering the dependence of the resolution on the illumination for (unfortunately, we could not plot it on the graph, since it was measured using the old method), we can note that the maximum resolution value dropped slightly, but the value increased significantly in low light conditions. Due to this, the average value slightly increased, and the dependence acquired smoothness and stability, which is so valuable for a good camera: the more gentle decline is observed with the deterioration of lighting, the better the camera copes. Obtaining such stability consists in honing the existing achievements, which was mentioned above. The flash brings the camera a little, which does not allow reaching the original resolution and works the worse, the worse the lighting.

LG could not ignore the flagships of other manufacturers. Since the camera turned out to be good, these chips are more pleasant additions than main trump cards.

The camera uses laser focusing, or rather, a laser autofocus assistant. The principle of its operation is allegedly the following: the smartphone calculates the distance to the object by the difference between the paths of the direct and reflected waves (laser beam), which either allows the camera to significantly narrow the focusing area, or not think at all and just set focus to the calculated distance. The question immediately arises: to which object is the distance calculated? After all, the main purpose of the sensor is fast focusing during fast shooting, on the assumption that the user "took out and photographed", and did not select the focus point on the display. However, it cannot be said that the benefits of this function are noticeable: even without lasers, current smartphones focus quickly enough. It is difficult to measure this, but if you recall Samsung's assurances that the Galaxy S5 camera focuses in 0.3 seconds without any lasers, then 0.27 seconds from LG does not look so impressive.

The second feature is the Magic Focus mode. In it, the camera takes five shots with focusing on different plans, after which you can select the desired plan and save the picture. Other shots in this shot will be slightly blurred. The function works a little oddly, since the focus does not always fall on the desired subject. If all this is done just for the sake of blurring the background, then it is not clear why the camera does not catch the desired object. If this is some semblance of the function "shoot now - focus later", then its implementation is far from ideal, because, again, out of five plans, you can not find a single one you need.

In any case, all these features are intended only to emphasize the main thing - the quality of the images. And since everything is fine with the quality of the camera, then it doesn't need any chips either. Either way, the LG G3 is a good fit for most shooting scenarios.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and there is also support for fourth generation (LTE) networks used in Russia. With the SIM-card of the domestic operator Megafon, the smartphone in practice confidently finds and works with the LTE network. Additional network capabilities include support for the second Wi-Fi band (5 GHz) and NFC technology. The mode of connecting external devices (USB Host, OTG) is supported here, so any flash drives connected to the Micro-USB port, as well as mice with keyboards, are perfectly recognized. The navigation module supports both GPS and domestic Glonass and works very clearly and quickly. Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or freezes of the system.

The screen is large, so drawing letters and numbers of virtual keyboards is quite comfortable to operate. The layout and arrangement of the buttons are standard: here you can switch languages by pressing a special button, there is a dedicated top row with numbers - you don't have to switch the layout every time. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out by the first letters in contacts. It is possible to move the virtual keyboard closer to any of the edges of the screen for ease of typing with one hand. Naturally, there is also a variant of continuous writing by sliding your finger from letter to letter (Swype), here it is called Path input.

The company went even further and added more unusual options for customizing the virtual keyboard, up to changing the height of the buttons or even reassigning them yourself. The developers promise that the adaptive technology of the LG G3 keyboard remembers the typing features of a particular user and contributes to faster typing and fewer errors. The smart keyboard cuts errors by 75 percent by analyzing the accuracy of your fingers hitting letters. Key buttons can also be enlarged for even faster entry of frequently used characters and higher typing accuracy. It also became much easier to adjust the position of the cursor in already typed text by holding the space for a long time.

OS and software

The operating system is the version of the Google Android 4.4.2 KitKat software platform, on top of which its own proprietary graphical user interface is traditionally installed - the successor to Optimus UI. The updated interface has got minimalistic flat graphics, icons and icons do not have shadows, the interface looks unburdened with additional graphic effects, which makes it easier to perceive. In this regard, the changes are most noticeable in the example of the notification drop-down menu, which has become suspiciously reminiscent of the new Apple iOS graphics for the iPhone.

In general, the updated user interface of the LG G3 has incorporated all the many developments that have already been implemented in the previous versions of the proprietary shell. QSlide mode allows you to make working windows smaller, detach them by moving them around the screen, and also change their transparency and number, while Dual Window splits the screen into two desktops for multitasking. QSlide can be activated from the notification menu, and the dual-window mode is enabled from the menu of the last running programs - there is an additional second tab, in Russian called the Dual Window. The infrared port is supplemented with a special program for remote control of household appliances. The smartphone also has numerous gesture control capabilities.

Even more attention is paid this time to the issue of security. The smartphone offers a whole range of functions, such as the already well-known Knock Code and guest mode, and the Content Lock system has also appeared, which keeps personal data protected and hidden from prying eyes when sharing the LG G3 smartphone. When connected to a computer, Content Lock prevents viewing of protected files, thus keeping the data safe. Protected files can be located either on the G3's internal memory or on a microSD card. With the help of the Kill Switch function, it is possible to remotely lock the smartphone in the event of theft. Kill Switch also allows you to remotely erase personal information stored on the LG G3. The program also includes scanning for viruses.

Performance

Like the latest flagships Samsung, HTC and Sony, the LG G3 hardware platform is based on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with four Krait 400 cores. Recall that the new platform has the functionality of the Snapdragon 800 with a slightly higher frequency of processor cores: Snapdragon 801 can operate at frequencies up to 2.46 GHz, while the core frequency of the previous version of the chip was limited to 2.36 GHz. True, smartphones Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8) use not the most powerful modification of this platform (MSM8974AB), where the maximum frequency of processor cores is only 2.3 GHz. This is less than the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the hero of today's review, the LG G3 smartphone - these devices have the frequency of processor cores reaching a maximum value of 2.46 GHz. This is explained by the fact that it uses a more advanced version of Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC). Unlike the MSM8974AB version, the GPU frequency is also higher here: it is equal to 578 MHz (550 MHz for the MSM8974AB). Thus, of the four most recent novelties presented on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform by top manufacturers, only Korean Samsung and LG devices operate on the maximum version of this platform - the other two, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8), are equipped with a slightly less powerful version.

The processor is supported in graphics processing by the same Adreno 330 video accelerator. The device initially has less than 11 GB of 16 GB of its own memory for the needs of the user. The amount of RAM of the smartphone is 2 GB, but in the future, a modification with a larger amount of memory (3 GB of RAM and 32 built-in flash arrays) should go on sale. MicroSD memory cards in this model are supported up to 128 GB, you can also connect flash drives to the Micro-USB port using a special adapter in OTG mode.

To get an idea of the performance of the platform of the tested smartphone, we will conduct a standard set of tests (at this point, it should be noted right away that one of the most visual and close to real operating conditions benchmark MobileXPRT, our test subject, unfortunately, flatly refused to pass, no matter how many attempts we tried undertaken).

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the most recent versions of popular benchmarks, we have summarized for convenience in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain behind the scenes - due to the fact that they once passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions of test programs.

Testing in MobileXPRT, as well as in the latest versions of AnTuTu 4.x and GeekBench 3:

The test results showed that despite the extremely high screen resolution, which is certainly one of the most stressing factors on the system, the LG G3 smartphone nevertheless demonstrated almost the same performance as the rest of its colleagues, which operate at a lower resolution. displays. All four newest top-end smartphones are approximately equal in performance, the difference lies within the margin of error - especially when you consider that we are now talking about such high results that all other smartphones are simply inaccessible. So in any case, we are now talking about the LG G3 and other new products on the Snapdragon 801 as the most powerful smartphones, the hardware performance of which will be enough for a long time to perform any possible tasks.

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

The results of testing the graphics subsystem in the gaming test Epic Citadel, as well as Basemark X and Bonsai Benchmark:

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats that make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that it is important for mobile devices to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

LG is once again pleasantly surprised by the full support for all necessary decoders in its smartphones. Unlike most of the reviewed devices from other companies, the capabilities of the built-in video player were enough for smooth playback of all our standard test clips. At the same time, there were no problems with sound either, and in a third-party MX player you don't even have to switch to hardware playback in the Hardware +... That is, in simple terms, the LG G3 will play any video downloaded from the network without any problems.

This smartphone has support for SlimPort (or Mobility DisplayPort) adapters that connect to the Micro-USB connector and provide video (and sound) transmission to external display devices. For testing, we used a monitor LG IPS237L... When using this monitor and our existing SlimPort adapter, the output was carried out at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 60 fps. In landscape orientation of the smartphone, the display of the image on the screens of the smartphone and the monitor is carried out, if possible, in landscape orientation (the exception is the start screen), while the image on the monitor is inscribed in the boundaries of the screen and is an interpolated copy of the smartphone screen.

When the smartphone is in portrait orientation, the image is displayed on the monitor screen in portrait orientation, while the image on the monitor is inscribed in height, and wide black fields are displayed on the left and right of the monitor screen.

Sound via HDMI is output (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no speakers in the monitor itself) and is of good quality. At the same time, multimedia sounds are not output through the loudspeaker of the smartphone itself, and the volume is controlled by buttons on the smartphone body. The smartphone connected to the SlimPort adapter is being charged, and the adapter must be connected to a power source via its existing Micro-USB connector.

The video output deserves a special description. To begin with, using a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing methods for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"), we checked how the video is displayed on the screen of the smartphone itself. Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped to determine the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution was 1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels and the frame rate was 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. In this test, we used the MX Player video player in "Hardware +" mode. The results of this (block entitled "Smartphone Screen") and the following test are tabulated:

The marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for the output of frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is very high, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The smartphone can even display 4K files up to and including 30p. Based on the test shots, the refresh rate of the LG G3 when displaying full-screen video may change according to the video frame rate. However, the uniform interleaving of frames is a relatively unstable state, since some external and internal background processes lead to periodic failure of the correct interleaving of intervals between frames. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly at the edge of the screen, however, on the test worlds it can be seen that the clarity is slightly reduced due to interpolation to the screen resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

With a monitor connected via SlimPort, during video playback with a standard player, the video file image is displayed only in landscape orientation, while only the video file image is displayed on the monitor (the translucent navigation bar is removed after a few seconds), and only information elements and virtual controls are displayed on the smartphone screen:

When playing video files with a resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) on the monitor screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the edge of the screen, maintaining the true proportions, and the resolution corresponds to the Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the monitor is equal to the standard range of 16-235, that is, in the shadows and highlights, all gradations of shades are displayed. The results of the monitor output tests are shown in the table above in the "SlimPort (monitor output)" block. The output quality is very good.

It turns out that the connection to external monitors, TVs and projectors, carried out using the SlimPort adapter, can be used for games, watching movies (including in Full HD resolution), displaying web pages and other activities that benefit from multiple size increases. screen.

Battery life

The lithium-polymer battery installed in the LG G3 turned out to be slightly smaller in volume than the Sony flagship, but the device is ahead of all other competitors in this matter. It is all the more necessary for him, since the smartphone has to deal with the highest screen resolution for today, and in terms of area, the LG G3 display is one of the largest. In principle, the developers promise that a specially developed new type of battery, in the cathode of which the metal is replaced by graphite, should fully compensate for the increased energy consumption due to the presence of a Quad HD screen - a separate division of the company, LG Chem, is responsible for the batteries.

However, all this has remained promises so far, and compared to competitors, the new flagship of the Koreans still demonstrated a shorter battery life in the same comparative tests.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m2) lasted 9 hours until the battery was fully discharged, and when continuously watching YouTube videos in high quality (HQ) The device lasted 7 hours with the same brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network. In 3D games mode, the smartphone worked for less than three hours, after which it signaled the need to charge. By the way, under heavy loads, a rather strong heating of the rear wall of the case is observed. Perhaps, with the release of new firmware, the smartphone will be able to demonstrate better autonomy, but so far this is the state of affairs.

Outcome

As for the cost of new items in our market, the price has not yet been officially announced, however, some large retail chains have already opened a pre-order for the LG G3 smartphone at a price of 30 thousand rubles. In principle, there are no revelations in this, we are already accustomed to the fact that top manufacturers play on the market according to the same rules, and all competitors put up their flagship solutions at this price in the new season.

As for the capabilities of the smartphone described today, only the most advanced models on the market, such as Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8), are the most powerful devices with top-end characteristics. Each of them has its own advantages over competitors, but there are also weaknesses. LG's flagship boasts, first of all, a screen with an unprecedented resolution (for ordinary smartphones), as well as a good camera with improved optical stabilization and laser focusing. A nice-looking and well-designed user interface can also be added to the assets of this model. The removable battery and support for memory cards are certainly commendable.

However, you can cite some disadvantages of the LG G3, albeit relative: lack of protection against water, weak autonomy, noticeably increased in size, and also a rather rough design body without any special frills, the presence of a single speaker, albeit loud, but still inferior in sound quality to HTC stereo speakers. Of course, we will not write down the lack of a fingerprint scanner and a blood pressure meter as a disadvantage, keeping in mind how poorly this element was organized by the Samsung flagship. Rather, it is a plus that the device is not overloaded with unnecessary elements that are needed just for show. But the aforementioned waterproofing of a modern smartphone would still not hurt ...

Nevertheless, the device turned out to be very interesting, quite worthy of competitors, but it is a pity that LG, having confidently entered the number of manufacturers of smartphones of the first magnitude, has stopped using such an important lever as a low price in promotion. Now, for the user, the choice between the described flagship devices is mainly determined by the emotional preference of a particular brand, because all the top new items not only came out quite worthy of each other, but are also sold at the same price. The previous flagship of the company, LG G2, was initially offered at a better price than competing solutions, but now this gap is completely leveled.
