Review of the Apple Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro. Seven Smartest Keyboard Covers for iPad Pro Customize iPad Pro Keyboard Russian Layout

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro needs just as much protection as the iPhone or the classic iPad. In addition, now there are enough ways to supply the giant with armor and turn it into typewriter at the expense of an external keyboard. So we rolled up our sleeves and collected seven of the highest quality keyboard cases for iPad Pro, among which both combined and separate specimens were found.

Apple Smart Keyboard

Apple Smart Keyboard- the first branded keyboard cover created by Cupertinians specifically for a specific gadget. When folded, it resembles the time-tested Smart Cover with its velvety microfiber. Gives out smart keyboard just a magnetic trough designed to accommodate the tablet. The arrangement of the keys resembles a MacBook, but with a cut off the top row of function buttons, that is, you get a full-fledged printing unit. The key travel is, however, less, however, there are no complaints.

The most important feature of the Apple Smart Keyboard is the rejection of Bluetooth due to a physical, one might say, iron connection via Smart Connector - three points for docking devices. No mating, no extra power consumption, no breaks. This moment strikingly distinguishes the apple accessory from some competitors.

The disadvantages can be written down unsightly when folded and, of course, the price. You will have to pay 13,290 rubles ($ 169) for the Apple Smart Keyboard.

Razer Mechanical Keyboard Case

Razer Mechanical Keyboard Case Is the freshest accessory in the line. He became famous for the fact that, firstly, the guys from Razer themselves got behind the wheel, secondly, the ability to turn a large iPad Pro into a full-fledged laptop, and, thirdly, a mechanical keyboard with a warm lamp stroke and built-in backlighting.

The case is made of polycarbonate, it looks very, very protected. The mechanical stand provides a stable position on the table, and it folds very solidly - with the Razer Mechanical Keyboard Case, it's not a shame to walk under your arm.

We think that those who cannot imagine life without high-speed printing have already rushed to place an order. This step is easy to understand, because the keyboard and the case itself look just gorgeous! But we are confused by one piquant moment - this wireless connection Bluetooth. Due to intermittent failures, many users have developed allergies. If Razer did everything well, there are no questions. Power consumption, by the way, is adequate: 10 hours with backlighting at maximum brightness and 600 hours with lights off.

Zagg slim book

Price per Zagg slim book is $ 140, and the connection to the tablet is via Bluetooth. Are you already turning around and leaving? Do not hurry. The case keyboard continues the tradition of the ASUS Transformer line and allows you to use the iPad Pro in four directions: a tablet; keyboard; book and video. Zagg Slim Book flexibly adjusts to the needs of the user, is easy to detach and carry. When combined, the device resembles MacBook Pro- gives out only the inscription ZAGG. The backlighting of the keys, we think you already noticed.

Logitech K780

Let's be honest: good keyboard covers for iPad Pro are over, only enchanting Chinese designs remain. Therefore, in order not to spoil the heading "The Seven Most", we decided to supplement the article with separate keyboards and covers. Logitech K780- a universal novelty that supports a bunch of devices and allows you to quickly switch between them thanks to the Easy-Switch button. The connection, of course, goes via Bluetooth (what kind of Smart Connector could be here?). For mobile devices rubber stand is provided - 12.9 ″ iPad Pro fits like a glove.

The keyboard can work for 24 months from one pair of AAA batteries, it can go to sleep, has a power button and a charge indicator. Stylistically, the device is quite modest, but it seems that it is a pleasure to type text on it.

TextBlade keyboard

It is a good tradition of AppStudio to end the selection of "The Seven Most" with some exotic specimen. For some reason, accessory makers don't favor the Smart Connector or the large iPad Pro in general, but there are gadgets that can please without it. Dismountable and comfortable keyboard TextBlade just one of them. With the help of magnetic fasteners, it quickly turns into a sandwich and stows away in a pocket / bag / backpack / case.

TextBlade is a sort of ergonomic split keyboard that is most effective for typing. With a modest keystroke, the characters are driven in perfectly, the fingers lie as they should, and the stand provides the correct position of the iPhone, iPad or any other device, but problems can arise with the large iPad Pro.

For the pleasure you have to pay as much as $ 99, and then spend money on engraving. Either way, it will be worth it. Proof - .

An interesting accessory for the iPad Pro - unlike other manufacturers of portable keyboards, which often adapt ordinary accessories to tablets, Apple has created a gadget from scratch and only for the iPad Pro.

Design, construction

The most correct way to test this device is to write a keyboard review right on the keyboard, which is what I am doing now. Note that in Russia, tablet owners almost never use such accessories with tablets, at least in real life I've seen such people once or twice. In other countries, especially in the United States, third-party keyboards are very popular. People on the road answer letters, work with documents, write books - in general, they do a lot of very different things. This is surprising, especially at first, but the answer is simple - the tablet takes up a minimum of space, works for a long time, plus practical Americans often want to get the most out of the purchased gadget. Which is quite understandable. If you follow my thoughts, you will understand why at all Apple decided to create a device like the iPad Pro. In corporate America, he found a place, on the one hand, it is an accessory for creativity and the creative class, on the other hand, an integral accessory for middle managers. Why not a laptop? Well, many people prefer to work with a mobile OS and there are no special tasks that require special programs. For some reason, people often think that working with mail, correspondence, calls, parsing and correcting documents is some kind of fictional use case and this is not the case in real life. Why, yeah. For me personally, correspondence and sorting out various issues takes at least an hour a day, and iPad, even Pro, even ordinary, even with a physical keyboard, even without it, always comes to the court, helps in everyday activities. Yes, I agree with those who brand the Pro as a device from the series "they would have done without it" - I can easily agree with that, but I will not return to Air myself. The company's niche devices like the iPhone 6 Plus, MacBook or iPad Pro are designed for a limited audience, but they are always found and happy with their toys that help them live and create. In addition, someone who, and gentlemen at Apple can definitely afford the most daring experiments - why not? It turns out well.

Note that before I got the described keyboard, I used (tried to use) a good old set of wireless Apple keyboards and the Incase Origami accessory. For a long time already I advise it to all iPad owners, a case with a keyboard stand, you can put a tablet there and work - but the Pro has one caveat, for some reason, switching languages using the usual keyboard shortcut does not work. Until I figured out the problem, if you figured it out, please write how to solve it. The keyboard and stand can be seen in the photo, this is, let's say, the best budget set for the iPad Pro, the keyboard will serve you with other devices as well. True, it will have to be worn separately, but it doesn't matter.

Now let's take a look at the keyboard for Pro. First, I'll tell you about the device, I ask you to forgive me for using official data, but it will be more correct this way. The keyboard does not require any manipulations with Bluetooth, it connects to the magnetic connector on the end of the iPad. I must say right away that it sits very tightly in place, you can print on your lap or on unstable surfaces. It is immediately evident that during the development they paid attention to this, thought about those who work in flight, on small tables and in other strange places. When folded, the keyboard turns into a cover and does not take up much space, although the tablet becomes noticeably heavier. Naturally, you can use the accessory as a stand for watching movies. The thing turned out to be unpretentious, special attention was paid to protection from an aggressive environment. If you look at the buttons, you will see that there are no gaps here - that is, you can spill coffee or something else, then clean the accessory and forget about the incident.

Now the official data plus a little from myself:

  • The top layer of the keyboard is made of special durable laser-cut fabric that follows the shape of the keys. The fabric provides spring tension on the buttons, eliminating the need for traditional mechanisms.
  • The keyboard is 4 mm thick and the buttons have excellent travel. There is no feeling that you have entered the country of the Lilliputians, took away a laptop from one of them and are trying to work. There is a lot of space for my hands, although I periodically press the screen with the fingers of my left hand, everything is fine with the right one, I never reached the screen.
  • The keyboard has 64 keys, one layout, QWERTY, there are no special options for any country yet - although our craftsmen have already gotten used to engraving without damaging the fabric. I have a negative attitude to such experiments and advise you to learn to type blindly, this skill will always come in handy, and you can work with at least QWERTY, at least with anything.
  • The surface of the keyboard consists of three unique materials, the upper layer is polyurethane, the lower one is made of microfiber - a soft material that cleans and protects the screen (hopefully). The middle layer is made of a new conductive material and is responsible for transmitting signals between the keyboard and the tablet. An interesting approach, not at all similar to the experience of other manufacturers of similar accessories. Usually, after all, how, but let's take a regular keyboard and remake it a bit for a tablet, make it smaller, add Bluetooth, well, maybe add a stand or something else. It turns out, as a rule, terrible. It's another matter when an accessory is created from scratch, out of nothing - and it is intended for one device, and not for all.
  • The keyboard sits securely on the table, does not move from side to side, ports are open - you can charge, connect an audio cable and listen to music. Pay attention, here they sacrificed "laptop" buttons for playback control and volume control, in general, fair reasoning: the screen is touch-sensitive, switching between applications is quick, the buttons on the end are accessible - there is nothing to load the keyboard.

Finally, the main feeling is sensibly done. Connected - you can start working right away. Although it is necessary to once again make a reservation about the skill of blind input, but this is nothing, you can spend a couple of weeks on training, and everything will work out - without engraving. Plus, any third-party engraving (not Apple) looks disgusting.

In work

Here I want to draw your attention to several points. Firstly, in the settings (Basic - Keyboards - Physical keyboard) I personally chose Russian-PC, over the years of using "poppies" it is more familiar to me. Secondly, if you plan to use the keyboard, you should remove the emoji layout, it will interfere when switching the language. Thirdly, switching the language here is not through cmd + space, but with the help of a special key in the corner on the left, it works quickly and efficiently, the habit appears after ten minutes of typing. Finally, all keyboard shortcuts work as expected.

Actually, I did not encounter any problems when typing, I liked working. Of course, this is not as convenient as MacBook keyboard Pro, but working on the road or somewhere in the city is quite possible - what do I mean by work? Let's say I can write an article with an iPad Pro and such a keyboard, reply to mail, publish a blog post, see what is happening in in social networks, and add posts there, then fold the keyboard and move on, holding the tablet under his armpit.

conclusions

In retail, the keyboard costs 13,290 rubles, the accessory turned out to be durable and extremely attractive for its audience - no problems with connection, the feeling of a miniature laptop, no special size restrictions. Yes, you need to master blind input - if you have not yet mastered it, you should do it, the skill is really necessary. A good and useful thing for iPad Pro owners, I recommend buying immediately with the tablet if you are purchasing a device just for the use cases described above - for example, raking mail in any conditions.

Where, among other things, he mentions the proprietary Smart Keyboard accessory. The keyboard for the iPad turned out to be interesting and at the same time controversial. Some consumers see the tablet as a replacement for a laptop, and it is in typing that it competes on an equal footing with gadgets running on "large" OS. We figure out what good is in a branded expensive accessory and what you have to sacrifice when buying it in comparison with alternatives.

Appearance and design

Apple Smart Keyboard resembles a Smart Cover: polyurethane on the outside, velvet microfiber on the inside, three segments for folding the cover into a stand. Only next is another block with a width of two segments, on which the buttons are located.

The keys are covered with a tough embossed fabric that resembles jeans. The material is interesting for its resistance to moisture (you can pour a smoothie on the keyboard, and then rinse it - nothing will happen) and the fact that after several days of active use (10-15 thousand characters each), visible fingerprints or some kind of other traces of exploitation.

The upper base of the keyboard has small slots, which are necessary for air to escape when you press the keys, this same space is the most unprotected in the device, it is advisable not to pour water there. Contact with liquids should also be avoided because although the keys are protected, the bottom of the keyboard is covered with the same microfiber (because when folded it touches the display), which, in turn, can become hard or get dirty.

The coating on the bottom of the keyboard is constantly in contact with surfaces of varying degrees of cleanliness, which is why it can grab grease marks, coffee residues, crumbs and any other debris, and then touch the same soiled side iPad display Pro. Before opening the keyboard, you have to constantly check whether the tabletop in the cafe is clean, and also look at the keyboard before folding it back.

The presence of a physical keyboard changed the flexibility of the Smart Cover, making it impossible for the user to position the device at a 30% angle to type on the on-screen keyboard. This is not a big problem since there are physical buttons. In this case, in the "TV" position, the tablet is installed with a keyboard.

Edge use cases

Notebook iPad setup is limited to a single tilt angle, which in the case of the 12.9-inch model can be considered the most successful (among other "fixes"): the screen is clearly visible when placed on a table, and when you place the structure on your lap. It is inconvenient to use the device only lying down, when the keyboard is placed on the chest - in this position, the screen would like to be placed at an angle of 60-70 degrees.

The single tilt angle also jeopardizes the tablet when you sit on a high bench and put the device on your knees: it can unfasten and fall. The device is fixed with magnets on the block where the keyboard is located, but if you click too actively on the screen, the connection can be broken.

Under normal conditions, this will not happen, but when you try to write something as soon as possible, you do not always control the force - during testing, the unintentional disconnection happened once, the tablet was caught before it came into contact with the asphalt, but these half-second of flight were really frightening.

Such inconveniences arose due to objective reasons, namely the design of the keyboard and Apple's desire to make both a cover and a stand out of it, and the ability to fix the device at different angles would make the system too bulky.

Keys

Nearly all keyboards for the 12.9-inch iPad remain similar in size to laptop keyboards, especially the letter block. The differences from keyboard to keyboard relate to two aspects: button travel and palm space. Everything is bad with the latter in the Smart Keyboard - it is not there, which means that it is difficult to hold the device with your palms when you sit on a bench: your wrists quickly become numb, because you have to bend your arms unnaturally.

The key travel for the Smart Keyboard is between the first generation (MacBook 12) and second generation (newer) butterfly mechanisms. The depth of pressing is also small, but the buttons have a well-audible click, which partially compensates for the small stroke. The sound is less loud than in the second generation "Butterfly", but it is already sufficient to distinguish well between pressing the buttons.

Convenience of typing, in comparison with the usual keyboards, is average, since you need to get used to pressing the buttons less strongly. The first few thousand characters feel like hitting the surface on which the keyboard is installed, but the longer you use it, the more your fingers get used to it, and the easier it becomes to type.

The typing speed remains exactly the same as when typing on a laptop keyboard, the number of typos initially increases, but this happens every time you change one keyboard to another with slightly changed keys. The best part is that the response speed remains perfectly high, there are no micro-delays.

The disadvantage is the lack of backlighting: at night, the brightness of the screen cannot be unscrewed, and at the marks that are comfortable for the eyes, the glow from the display is not enough to highlight the inscriptions on the buttons

The layout in the tested sample is traditional ANSI, which is fine, but with the Up and Down half cursor buttons stacked one above the other and aligned with Left and Right. A similar scheme is used in the latest MacBooks, it is inconvenient because you constantly confuse them blindly.

A much more successful system from the old laptops of the company, it seems, will not return in the near future:

There is no row on the branded keyboard function keys, so for many actions you will have to interact with the touch interface. Perhaps this is a deliberate restriction to maintain sales. alternative solutions- Most third-party keyboards contain useful buttons, including volume and player controls, desktop exit, and screen lock.

Several languages

When connecting an external keyboard, the main inconvenience is working with the layout, since Apple has not provided any identifiers for which language is currently enabled. At the same time, a panel with some hotkeys is displayed in a number of places where you can call the keyboard; it would be logical to show the active layout language on it (for example, with a flag, as implemented in macOS).

Start typing - always a lottery if more than one letter layout is active in the system

Now, to find out which layout is active, you need to click Ctrl Space or a separate language switch key, if such is provided (on the Smart Keyboard, this is a planet icon), after which a cloud with all active layouts is displayed over the program window. You can switch between them by repeatedly pressing the spacebar (without releasing Ctrl) or when the list of layouts appears, use the “Up” and “Down” arrows.

iOS remembers the last two layouts used, thanks to which it switches between them with one click, but this partly solves the problem, only at the moments when the user is already writing something and has already checked which language is currently active.

An alternative solution would be functionality from the MLSwitcher application, in which the user assigns shortcuts for each layout. This method of operation allows you to always activate desired language- before you start typing, you click the desired layout and start typing, which simplifies life, since you do not need to check whether the desired language is currently active or is it worth switching.

Implementation as in MLSwitcher is needed by a small number of users even on Mac, on iPad it would be used even less, therefore it is logical not to add such features to the OS, but third-party software will not solve this problem, because the developers, in principle, do not have such deep access to iOS , not to mention the parallel operation of several utilities.

To cope with this limitation is still possible in one way - to come to terms. But in the settings you can change the layout, all the necessary options are available, including the usual Windows users("Russian-PC", "Ukrainian-PC").

Smart Connector

The keyboard connects to the tablet via a proprietary three-pin connector, which serves to connect various accessories and allows data and power transmission. Its use is still limited to a small selection of accessories, but already now some advantages are noticeable from it.

The keyboard works more responsive than when you connect a third-party accessory via Bluetooth, which is noticeable not so much by the speed at which letters appear, but by the response to keyboard shortcuts.

In addition, the device does not need to go into sleep mode, which means there is no need to restore the connection after activation. The keyboard always waits for a command from the user, which pleases me after using other solutions, which, after even a short break, need to be given 3-5 seconds to switch to operating mode.

The main consequence of using the Smart Connector is that since it is a direct connection with the ability to transfer energy, there is no battery in the keyboard, which means that it never needs to be charged, any physical damage will not lead to ignition (at least break it in half), and thanks to this, the mass of the device turned out to be not so big - only 340 grams.

Hotkeys

Any external keyboard Paired with the iPad, it retains the same operating principles directly borrowed from the Mac, so that familiar keyboard shortcuts work exactly the same, whether it's select all text (Cmd + A), copy (Cmd + C), paste (Cmd + V) or cut (Cmd + X), as well as bold (Cmd + B), italic (Cmd + I), and underlined text (Cmd + U). Even screenshots can be created as in macOS (Cmd + Shift + 3).

Many computer users limit themselves to these combinations, and use arrows and a touchpad or mouse to move through the text. The last two are not supported in iOS, which could slow down movement through the text, but other hotkeys make this process almost as efficient as when paired with the usual manipulators:

Option + Left and Right arrows allow you to quickly jump through words, and if you additionally hold down Shift, words will be highlighted
Option + Up and Down Arrows - Navigate through paragraphs
Cmd + arrows "Up" and "Down" - analogs of Home and End, respectively

In any application, if you hold down Cmd, a list of program-specific abbreviations will appear. Standard combinations are not displayed here, only navigational keyboard shortcuts, whether moving to different sections, creating a new tab or switching display.

Tweetbot

The branded accessory cannot control videos in the browser, for example, pause by pressing the spacebar. This will change with the arrival of iOS 11, but for now you have to touch the tablet display.

Alternatives

Third-party solutions are inferior to Smart Keyboard in the complex, despite the fact that they win in some aspects. If the accessory has a palm rest, it will certainly be heavier and cannot fold to fit the tablet like a TV, longer key travel guarantees an increase in thickness, and the backlight deprives the keyboard of full protection from moisture.

The main alternatives to Smart Keyboard (worth) are conventional Bluetooth keyboards that can be comfortably used in one workplace, for example, the native Magic Keyboard.

Choosing these options makes it impossible to print out, but if the iPad is mainly used in the workplace, and you only need to take it with you to consume content or showcase projects, this will be more convenient. So the buttons will be pressed as usual, there is no need to retrain, you can also pair the iPad with a less heavy Smart Cover, which will act as a stand in the workplace and sewn up for the screen outside the home.

Optimal keyboards for iPad are made by Logitech, here you can choose from a bulky CREATE with backlit keys or a massive Slim Combo with a fold-down display stand, like the Surface, a detachable keyboard and an additional area for the palm of your hand, as well as a clip for Apple Pencil. Both start at $ 150.

conclusions

The Smart Keyboard for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is an interesting accessory that isn't so much attractive as a display protection, but a physical keyboard. A trade-off has been made between the convenience of the form factor, weight, thickness, and a laptop keyboard-like experience. There is no letter highlighting, yes, but this is not a problem for those who have mastered touch typing.

The typing process is spoiled only by the lack of space for the palms and the only angle of inclination of the display - these factors do not allow you to comfortably and for a long time to type when the iPad is on your knees (because of the first, palms get numb, the second endangers an expensive tablet when the knees are much lower than the pelvis) ...

If there is a surface where you can put a tablet with a connected keyboard, there will be no problems, and the absence of an area under the palms will force you to put your hands closer to the screen, which at the level of motor skills makes it comfortable to combine touch navigation through the OS and typing letters on a physical keyboard.

The design is not perfect, but considering that when folded, the Smart Keyboard protects the screen without making the tablet too thick, and when fully opened, remains rigid enough to hold it well, the decisions made by the engineers seem to be successful.

If you take into account the not very humane price, buying a keyboard for iPad Pro is worth only for those users who really type a lot. If the text remains a side process, it is better to answer short letters and communicate in instant messengers using on-screen buttons, and buy useful programs with the money saved.

3 reasons to buy Smart Keyboard:

  • perfect responsiveness
  • small thickness and weight
  • moisture protection

3 reasons not to buy Smart Keyboard:

  • a number of function keys are missing
  • no palm rest
  • no need to write a lot of text on the tablet

Can you replace your laptop with using iPad Apple's Pro and Smart Keyboard? This question is the focus of our review, especially now that Apple is introducing a second version of the tablet, which will go side by side with the original.

Apple released the first iPad Pro in 2015 with a lot of fanfare, and for the second version of the tablet, Apple has cut the diagonal and trimmed the memory, incorporating some new and very interesting display technologies.

The new iPad Pro won't replace laptops, which Apple is targeting, unless customers buy Apple Smart Keyboard or something similar from third-party manufacturers. Is the Apple keyboard worth the money? How well does it meet the typing needs of the iPad Pro? Apple Smart Keyboard review next ...

Apple Smart Keyboard: Design

Users familiar with Apple's Smart Covers will recognize the Smart Keyboard's design language. The keyboard takes its place thanks to the magnets positioned along the left edge (in portrait mode) of iPad Pro. The keyboard folds from an inner cover and a keyboard back base with clever curves in the middle of the back of the cover to form a triangle stand.

The Smart Connector on the left edge of the iPad Pro mates with the connector above the number keys on the keyboard. The keyboard positions iPad Pro at comfortable viewing angles for typing or viewing multimedia content on your tablet. The contact is also responsible for transferring data between the tablet and the keyboard, so the user does not have to rely on a Bluetooth connection. It's also a standalone keyboard, so it doesn't need a charging cable. Finally, the tablet will be able to update the keyboard firmware when Apple will send an update.

Note the three-pin connector on the iPad Pro's rib.

Click on the text input field in the application or in the iOS 9 interface, a panel will appear at the bottom of the screen quick access which will reflect things like text formatting or automatic sentence replacement.

Apple designed the Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro with a PU textured outer layer. It is made in dark gray, almost black. The keys don't travel too deep, but it does keep the buttons low so they won't be pressed when the tablet and Smart Keyboard are folded.

Install the keyboard stand properly and the keyboard will act as a stand for what Apple calls "watch mode" (see above).

Users don't have to worry about crumbs, dust and other debris underneath the buttons as they are integrated into the outer layer of the keyboard material.

Removing the Smart Keyboard from iFixit demonstrates the unique button technology.

The keyboard design remains dark and conservative, which will be preferred by most business users, although most creative users will prefer bright colors. I would have liked the red Smart Keyboard, even if I use the tablet primarily for work.

The edges of the keyboard and lid feel a little harsh, which may not be very comfortable. In addition, when the keyboard is tucked inside the lid and folded over the iPad Pro's screen to protect it, half of the lid rises slightly above the other half due to the integrated keyboard. Not only does it look bad, but it is annoying on a tactile level, although this is just nit-picking.

The magnetic mount holds well, but not enough for you to pick up the iPad Pro by the keyboard, allowing the tablet to dangle underneath. You will drop your tablet and will likely smash its screen or become a victim of other damage.

AppleSmartKeyboard: Typing Experience

Some users see the iPad Pro keyboard as a luxury item, but for those users trying to replace their laptop, the typing experience is the most important aspect. new keyboard Apple.

If users rely onSmartKeyboard?

For objectivity Smart review Apple's Keyboard, we'll compare the keyboard to the Logitech Create for iPad Pro.

Typing on the Logitech keyboard feels slightly better, but the keyboard doubles the thickness iPad tablet Pro. While the Bluetooth keyboard may offer users a somewhat better typing experience, it is not as comfortable as the adjacent Smart Keyboard. This is why it is the most the best option for those users who want to replace a laptop with a tablet. You don't have to charge the keyboard like with Bluetooth counterparts, Smart Keyboard doesn't add much weight or bulk. And if you want to use your iPad Pro as a tablet, you can quickly uninstall Smart Keyboard.
