Sony Xperia Z2 tablet. Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet: strengths and weaknesses of the second generation of samurai. Additional cameras are usually mounted above the device screen and are used mainly for video conversations, gesture recognition, etc.

Sony's line of tablet PCs today expanded with a new device - a tablet Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 was presented to the world in Barcelona at the MWC exhibition. Last year, the company made a splash in the world of 10-inch tablets with the release of its Tablet Z - a dust- and moisture-resistant device that became one of the thinnest and most productive gadgets. And now we see a new device that has become even thinner, lighter and more productive, and even works under Android control 4.4! It’s even already been announced.

Features and SpecificationsSonyXperiaTabletZ2.

Design

And so, as already mentioned, the receiver has become lighter and thinner - its dimensions are 172 x 266 x 6.4 mm with 439 grams in the LTE version and only 426 grams in the Wi-Fi model, while the Xperia Tablet Z weighs 495 grams and its thickness is 6.9 mm. Thus, new tablet The lightest and thinnest 10-inch tablet on the market!

The OmniBalance design gave the device a chic look and recognition - all the lines, all the edges, everything in the appearance of the gadget is admirable. Not without the use of noble materials - metal and glass, of which the body itself is composed.

Screen Xperia TabletZ2

The entire front part is occupied by a 10-inch Full HD TRILUMINOS display with an IPS matrix, which guarantees excellent viewing angles, bright and rich colors. Thanks to the implementation of completely new technology Live Color LED in the screen has increased the depth of colors and shades. On a screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 you can comfortably work, watch movies, play modern games and get a lot of pleasure from using it of this tablet. Of course, there is also proprietary Sony X-Reality technology for mobile devices, which makes the picture even clearer and more detailed.

Hardware (processor and memory specifications)XperiaTabletZ2

As we remember, the previous Xperia Tablet Z model was equipped Snapdragon processor S4 Pro, which provided already excellent performance. The Tablet Z2 has a new 4-x nuclear processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 operating at 2.3 GHz, which is many times faster than its predecessor! The graphics are handled by Adreno 330, a well-proven chip. As for memory, there is 2 GB of RAM, but the internal volume depends on the tablet model: 16 and 32 GB models with Wi-Fi and 16 GB LTE model.

And they didn’t forget about the camera, and about the speakers too

If you think that you can’t take good pictures with a tablet, then you’re a little mistaken. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 has an 8-megapixel Exmor RS matrix, which is used in many mobile devices in the line. Of course, the tablet camera application does not have such an abundance of settings and applications as in smartphones, but 36 scenes in automatic mode will be more than enough to use the tablet and take a good photo with it. Still, for the most part, you'll use your tablet for... social communication, so its front-facing 2MP HD camera is also based on an Exmor RS sensor, which will provide excellent image quality even in low light.

Thanks to Sony S-Force Surround technology, the sound of external speakers has become even larger and clearer. By the way, now there are 4 of them! Also best sound provide Clear Audio technologies – Clear Stereo, Clear Bass and Clear Phase, as well as a noise reduction circuit.

Battery and runtimeTabletZ2

Behind autonomous operation The new tablet has a 6000 mAh battery, and for a 10-inch Android tablet this parameter cannot be called the highest. There are no official data regarding the operating time of the gadget, but the manufacturer stated that it can easily last 10 hours in video playback mode and about 100 hours in music playback mode. By the way, the Qualcomm chip has support for Quick Charge 2.0 technology, which allows you to charge the device up to 75% faster.

In contact with

What are modern flagship “devices”, be they smartphones or tablets, from Sony? The answer is simple: these are devices with top technical stuffing and a very elegant, laconic design, which has practically no analogues in the Android world. And if the designers of the Japanese company have more or less decided on the exterior of their devices - gadgets with the letter Z in the name are made in a similar style, then it is impossible to choose the hardware once and for all. Platforms that were considered the best just six months or a year ago have now become commonplace. And after a short period of time they will move into the category of “strong middle peasants”. Alas. Technologies are improving and developing too quickly.

At the presentation of the Sony Xperia Z2, company representatives said the following: “We will release flagship devices as often as technology improvements allow.” This phrase applied to smartphones, but it is likely that Sony's tablet division will borrow this motto. Time will tell how it will actually turn out. In the meantime, we will take a closer look at the updated Sony tablet.

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

Visually, the tablet is not much different from the previous model. The gadget is made in Sony's corporate style - modern, strict, ascetic. A very solid, “adult”, so to speak, exterior. Key Feature The novelty lies in reducing the already small dimensions. The Z2 Tablet has become half a millimeter thinner: 6.4 versus 6.9 mm for its predecessor. In addition, the tablet lost 55 grams: from 495 to 440 g. And the version without a built-in modem weighs only 425 grams! Agree, excellent characteristics for a full-size tablet. The gadget does not take up much space in the bag, fits into many additional sections and hardly weighs down your luggage.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet - front panel

No keys appeared on the front side of the tablet - all buttons, as usual, are touch sensitive. The side frames around the display are a little too big – I wish they were a little narrower. However, this is a remark from the “nit-picking” category. The front panel is covered protective glass, scratch resistant.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet with display turned on

The back panel is made of plastic with a matte soft-touch coating. This solution looks very cool... until the tablet is in your hands. The “back” of the gadget is very soiled, it quickly gets dirty, which is why the Z2 Tablet loses a considerable part of its original charm. Getting rid of annoying fingerprints is not so easy, and most importantly, doing it is almost pointless: after a short period of time, the gadget will be covered with them again. To be fair, we note that such a coating causes pleasant tactile sensations, and there are practical benefits from it - the gadget does not slip out of your hands.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet - rear panel

The power and volume buttons have been moved closer to the middle of the left side. It turned out to be not very convenient: it’s not easy to reach the buttons without shifting the tablet into one hand. The buttons are pleasant to the touch, with a short and clear stroke. The connector for a wired headset is located at the bottom end, which is why when watching a movie you have to turn the device upside down, since leaning it, for example, against a table with headphones connected is absolutely impossible. Frankly speaking, not the best design solution.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet - keys on the left side

Slots for microSD and micro-SIM cards are located on the top end, under a common plastic plug. Next to them is the MHL interface, combining video output and microUSB 3.0, and an infrared port for control household appliances. For the sake of greater resemblance to the Xperia Z2 smartphone, the side edges are decorated with metal - or “metal-like”, you won’t understand - inserts.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet - connectors on the top end

The tablet has a body, like all gadgets. Xperia series Z, dust and waterproof according to class IP58. That is, it can withstand not only jets of water, but also complete immersion to a depth of up to one and a half meters for half an hour. Note that the predecessor could only “dive” a meter. Of course, protection from water is provided only when the plugs are closed. And in order not to open them too often to connect to charger, you can use the magnetic contact on the bottom end and power the tablet from the docking station.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet - bottom end

The gadget is assembled well. Of course, the desire to reduce weight as much as possible affected the rigidity of the structure - when the sides are squeezed, the body creaks a little, but we are already accustomed to this. To achieve streaks on the display, you need to press hard on the front panel. For a tablet with such a thin body and surprisingly low weight, this is very good.

Tablets had no future until Apple loudly announced them. Much water has passed under the bridge since then, but no matter what tablet comes out, one way or another, sooner or later it will still be compared to the iPad. Our subject is compared to iPad Air for a reason. It was the “air” tablet that was called the lightest and most elegant before the advent of the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2. Now we have a huge 10.1-inch tablet with resistance to water and dust, which has earned the title of the thinnest and lightest tablet ever. Impressive?

Sony Xperia Tablet Z1 has been recognized best tablet in Europe. This is not a very sour start. The bar was set high from the very beginning. Girls filmed reviews about him in the bathroom, men bathed him in the Dnieper, in general, everyone liked him. Although there was something to complain about - the rigidity of the device, for example, left much to be desired. And at IFA 2014 in Barcelona they presented a continuation of this beauty, calling it simply Sony Xperia Tablet Z2. And what did they do?

Design and ergonomics

At first glance, the tablet resembles a plasma TV, the perfect size if you plan to carry it in a backpack. Or a thin university notebook for all subjects. It is practically A4 size and is easily lost among papers, folders and books. I especially like the fact that despite the dominance of tablets on the market, the Tab Z2 is not like any of them. It is strict, conservative, straight lines, sharp corners, ideally combined with the flagship.

Thin, light and elegant - I will never get tired of repeating this, it seems. Because everyone who has ever picked up a tablet was very surprised that it weighs practically nothing. It seems that the Japanese were inspired by a piece of paper.

There is a lot to see here. The edges are strewn with various ports, connectors and buttons. On top there are two plugs. Under the first long one there are slots for a micro-SIM card and microSD, under the second there is a slot for microUSB. Actually, these are the two topics that must always be kept dry, otherwise the tablet will simply stop working.

There is nothing placed on the right side, but on the bottom there are sensors for connecting a docking station and an audio jack.

On the left side there is a volume rocker and a small lock button. Since there is no double-tap unlock function, get used to its miniature size and location. It's not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

The front part is completely covered with protective tempered glass, and the back is covered with soft-touch plastic that is pleasant to the touch. It has a plus and a minus. Plus - tactile sensations. Pleasant and tenacious. Minus - easily soiled. Very easily soiled. And it takes a lot of effort to wipe it off.

There are Sony logos on the lid, Xperia logos below, and in the upper corner there is an 8.1 MP main camera eye and an NFC icon below it.

On the top frame around the display there is a company logo, a 2.2 MP front camera and an event indicator.

You understand that such a bandura will not fit into a small handbag. There is no magic way you can stuff it into a clutch. So your girlfriend, who values mobility, small handbags and small dogs, may not like such a tablet and will lie on the bedside table. For everyone else who doesn’t worry and walks around with a backpack and a larger bag, the tablet will be convenient to use. Due to its parameters, it fits perfectly into the laptop compartment instead of a laptop, and also weighs two or even three to four times lighter than your laptop. And due to the parameters and the “smart” keyboard, the Sony Xperia Tab Z2 can easily replace it, unless, of course, you are going to load it as a gaming laptop. As a non-fan of tablets, I can say with confidence that a 10-inch device, as an intermediate device between a smartphone and a computer, is the most logical option for using a tablet.

Display

At first glance, the screen seems very cool. 10.1 inches, capacitive IPS display with TRILUMINOS technology with excellent oleophobic coating. And then you discover that it also has a glossy finish. And that its resolution is quite strange - 1920 x 1200. And that the maximum brightness in the sun is not comfortable enough. That is, the text is readable, but when we filmed the video review, nothing was visible through the lens.

But indoors the display has good viewing angles, the brightness is sufficient, and the richness and contrast of the picture are at a decent level. Sitting in a room with normal lighting, watching a movie on such a display is a thrill. The only thing is that at an angle the white color turns slightly pink, at another angle it turns a little yellow - that’s how unpredictable it is.

The huge frames at first glance are actually the perfect size if you end up using the tablet and didn’t buy it so that it would sit nicely in the docking station. Such a large tablet is unlikely to be purchased for mobility, but rather for practicality. Therefore, frames are needed so that there is somewhere to put your hands. With such a width, the tablet is easy to control in both horizontal and vertical orientations. Just now, the virtual buttons still “eat up” part of the display... And thanks to the black fields, the tablet can resemble a photo frame. But this is definitely a subjective question.

But there is definitely one advantage over the previous tablet - it has Sony Tablet Z2 no films! That is, the developers have finally come to the realization that protective glass does not need proprietary protective films, which you simply cannot remove, even if you really want to. Excellent tempered glass with oleophobic coating. This is beauty! Ideal for working with texts, surfing the Internet and watching movies. But if you want to look at something on the display in direct sunlight, then do not forget to take off your sunglasses, or better yet, look for shade.

Cameras

There are two of them, and they are of fairly good quality. Unless you have a bad habit of comparing smartphone and tablet cameras. The main camera has 8.1 MP and a bunch of useful and not so useful software. The camera can shoot panoramas, HDR photos and videos, carry out multi-shot shooting, has 8x digital zoom and LED backlight. The footage is of very good quality, but there will be problems with detailing. And even in artificial or insufficient lighting, the resulting image will not delight you.

The menu has as many as nine shooting modes: super auto, manual settings, background defocus, fabulous effects, art, timeshift butst (when you have the opportunity to choose the best shot from those taken before and after pressing the shutter), social life (for people who constantly post photos on Facebook and want to exchange them with friends there) , a 360-degree view, and evernote, which lets you save photos to your account.

There is no separate button to launch the camera, but this function is accessible from the unlock screen. In the lower left corner you will find a small menu where you can select the resolution and shooting ratio. Above it is an icon for switching to the front camera, which has 2.2 MP. You shouldn't expect anything supernatural from her. There is a feature for “cleaning” the face, which is usually called “smoothing”.

The main problem that I personally have with cameras is the size of the tablet. It’s very inconvenient to photograph with such a huge tablet. It is at this moment that it seems that the tablet is cumbersome, it turns out that at the concert you are blocking everyone’s view, and they look at you in surprise and condemnation. If two aspects – convenience and attitude of others – don’t matter to you, then feel free to take pictures of everything.

Sound

The speakers are placed favorably. They are small, I didn’t find them the first time, it seems that the sound comes from somewhere inside. In fact, these are two short stereo speakers that are located at the bottom of the display.

But given the fact that when watching a video you hold the tablet with both hands, most often I turned the tablet over and the speakers were located on top of my fingers. Volume is adequate, clarity is average, and overall, if you forgot your headphones at home and want to watch a series with sound, the sound of the speakers will not disappoint. In nature or in recreation areas you will hear quite well.

Specifications

The tablet received mega-progressive technical characteristics, like a flying saucer. Quad-core Krait 400 processor Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8974-AB with a frequency of 2.3 GHz, Adreno 330 graphics and 3 GB of RAM. In tests, the tablet is ahead of the rest, which is what you hope for when you pay that kind of money for such hardware. All toys go to maximum settings, everything looks beautiful. The interface responds instantly, the animations are smooth, and everything looks quite nice. And in general, what can I say if everything is fine? At maximum loads, the tablet still heats up, a little closer to the left edge in the center. And so, yes, the speed of the device is cool. These are huge advantages of the device. The tablet does not slow down and flies straight.

Software

The device runs Android 4.4 KitKat. Firmware from Sony is always an acquired taste. The look with the flying waves, ooh The opinion is subjective, personal, there are people who find all this appearance like. But! I repeat not for the first time - the number of programs pre-installed on the fly is such that with devices from this company I spend the least amount of time in the Play Store.

All the popular ones are here at once social media, a folder with tools, branded navigation, news from Sociallife, SonySelect and Whats New, where the company recommends interesting applications, TrackID, remote control home appliances via infrared, Smart Connect, which helps connect your tablet and devices with one touch. In general, there is a lot of useful stuff, but also a lot of nonsense that clogs up the device’s memory. And on a 16 GB tablet, about 11 GB are immediately available. There is also a 32 GB variation. Whichever option you choose, there is always the option to install microSD up to 64 GB.

Protection

This has become a good tone for flagship devices. And if once protection from water and dust was perceived as something that added great advantages to the device, now it is so commonplace that the absence of a function causes indignation and bewilderment. The housing is protected from water and dust according to IP 55/58 standards. That is, you can easily lie on a sandy beach near a river or pool without being afraid of grains of sand.

And if you want to swim with the tablet, you can do this for 30 minutes in fresh water at a depth of up to 1.5 meters, and only if all the caps are closed. There are only two of them, so take the trouble to make sure they are sealed tightly. Otherwise, no warranty will save the device.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet has not changed much in appearance and remains similar to its predecessor Sony Xperia Tablet Z. The same faceted rectangle, wide side frames - almost 2.5 cm on all sides, which makes the device visually seem long and wide. But the tablet is very thin and this makes it look fragile, however, this really affected the rigidity of the device: we found that the plastic body of the device begins to creak slightly if you press on the edges, and even bends a little. The back panel is made of matte plastic that will not slip in your hands. Its color may vary; there are black and white options to choose from; we received a white model for testing. On the back is the camera lens, and right below it is the NFC icon - this is the NFC detection area.

The tablet is best used in landscape mode, as Sony inscriptions on both sides of the device hint at this. There are no keys on the front side, only virtual buttons at the bottom of the display, which is covered with protective glass. Memory card slots and micro-SIM cards, the micro-USB connector is covered with plugs, because the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet, like the previous Sony Xperia Tablet Z, is waterproof. Constantly opening and closing plugs is not very convenient; it’s good that at least the headphone jack did without them.

We also tested the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet for water resistance: the tablet can actually be wet, doused, held under running water and even submerged under water, of course, after closing the caps. He passed our tests. The device's protection against moisture and liquids corresponds to classes IP55 and IP58, which means that it can be immersed for half an hour in water to a depth of 1.5 meters.

The model can be purchased in black and white colors.

Dimensions and weight - 4.3

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet has dropped more than 60 grams and weighs only 430 g, by the way, it is lighter Apple iPad Air, such a tablet will clearly not weigh down your luggage or bag. The dimensions of the model are 26.6 × 17.2 × 0.66 cm; the length and width remain the same, but the thickness has decreased slightly. After all, this is a 10-inch model, so it will be difficult for you to operate it with one hand.

Ports and interfaces - 5.0

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is more than fine with ports and interfaces; there is only no HDMI connector, but a USB port that supports MHL technology For simultaneous charging and video transmission, it is not needed. At the top end to the left of the center there are two plugs, under one is a micro-USB 2.0 connector with MHL support, under the other are slots for micro-SD and micro-SIM cards, on the left, at the very edge of the tablet is the device antenna area, on the right is infrared sensor and microphone. The right end is empty. Where is the headset jack? To our surprise, it is located in a rather unexpected place - on the bottom end, along with the magnetic connector of the charging station, which, by the way, is not included in the kit. This placement of the audio jack may seem inconvenient, but in practice it didn’t bother us, and you can always turn the tablet over or rotate it in any direction.

However, it is worth noting that not all headphones may be suitable; the device may ask you to use another headset. In addition, there is a piquant subtlety of translation here; during our tests, we found a pop-up message: “Headphones connected.”

The model has a full set wireless interfaces, there is everything that is found on tablets, and even a little more: Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP support, Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n/ac), A-GPS receiver with GLONASS support so you don’t get lost anywhere, LTE -modem, as well as NFC with infrared port for controlling home appliances. By the way, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z had an identical set of interfaces, from a 4G modem to NFC.

Performance - 3.9

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet showed very good results, both in synthetic tests and in daily use. The tablet is equipped with a 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974AB processor operating at a frequency of 2.3 GHz, with an Adreno 330 graphics chip. Separately, we can mention 3 GB of RAM, which we have only encountered on Samsung so far Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. Our tests, each run five times, show averages over five iterations.

In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, the tablet showed a result of 2755 points in Multi-Core tests, which is slightly lower, but approximately at the level of the results Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and Apple iPad Air. In the SunSpider benchmark - 1038 milliseconds, it’s not even clear why it took so long. For example, Apple iPad mini with Retina, Apple iPad Air, Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 completed the test noticeably faster. The graphics chip has one of the highest results at the beginning of 2014, for example, 27 fps in the T-Rex HD Onscreen C24Z16 test from the GFXBenchmark benchmark, the same amount was obtained only Nokia Lumia 2520. Unlike the Lumia 2520, the Sony can even install many applications in which you can use the capabilities of the hardware. The results of synthetic tests are at a decent level; with daily use, the tablet does not slow down, even in heavy games.

The built-in memory capacity is 16 or 32 GB and supports memory cards up to 64 GB.

Display - 4.3

There are no major changes to the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet screen: there is the same 10.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels - these are good results. This, in our opinion, is, of course, not a clear Retina, like Apple tablets and Samsung flagships, but also quite decent and clear: 224 pixels per inch, individual pixels “cut through” only if you bring the tablet very close to your eyes. Wide viewing angles allow you to demonstrate a picture for a small company, and color gamut almost matches the sRGB standard, falling just short in the area of blue color. The manufacturer has applied TRILUMINOS technology, commonly used in Sony TVs. It expands the color spectrum of the screen in the red and green regions, which, in any case, does not contradict our measurements.

However, it is worth noting that during our tests the touchscreen puzzled us a little: sometimes it seemed to fall asleep and did not sense touches. True, this trouble went away after a software update offered by the system almost immediately after the first launch - the touch panel began to work accurately and quickly, however, no better than that of the flagships of other companies that we tested. In landscape mode, the pop-up keyboard along with virtual keys The controls cover more than half of the display, but words are typed on it easily and conveniently.

The maximum measured brightness was slightly higher than the average values - 410 cd/m2, the brightness distribution at an average level was 89% (see the table above for more details), and the contrast was above average - 1037:1. The display, in our opinion, is good, although without the fancy resolution with a huge number of pixels per inch.

Battery - 4.6

Accumulator battery new Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet turned out to be overall better battery predecessor. The device lasted 4 hours 22 minutes in our tests. in load mode (Sony Xperia Tablet Z - 5 hours 49 minutes), which is not surprising, since the battery capacity is the same, 6000 mAh, but the processor has become much more powerful and, accordingly, consumes more. In minimum load mode, the tablet lasted 21 hours 25 minutes. The HD video of the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet was almost three and a half hours longer - 10 hours 59 minutes, this is a good result and a big step forward for this young and interesting line of tablets.

However, as our tests showed, the tablet charges very slowly. For example, when playing games, the battery drains faster than it charges from the mains; while charging, it asks you to reduce the use of the device. In our tests, the device was charged to 10% in 24 minutes, and fully charged in almost 5 hours.

Software

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet runs on the latest for today Android versions 4.2.2 Kitkat. In our opinion, the most interesting things pre-installed on the tablet are an application for controlling home devices using the infrared port, a couple of programs “for connecting” with devices, such as Smart Connect, Xperia Link for connecting to the Internet via Xperia phone(it turns out to be a very exclusive program) and the Throw function for playing media content on other devices.

I was pleasantly surprised by the presence office suite OfficeSuite 7.4 Pro compatible with Microsoft Office 365, there is also a simple image editor Pixlr Express, Xperia Lounge - for access to various new content, the choice of which seemed limited to us. The PlayStation Now service is also available, which did not work the first time in our tests. He will let you play Play game Station if you have a broadband network connection. There are also typical applications, for example, for downloading movies, watching media content, reading books, social networks etc.

Cameras - 5.0

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet has two good cameras, by tablet standards. The rear camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, an Exmor RS matrix, autofocus, HDR mode (high dynamic range), face and smile detection, the ability to take panoramic photos and much more, including an automatic mode that recognizes up to 36 types of shooting conditions, for those who do not want to delve into the settings. In good lighting, the rear camera, in our opinion, can produce more or less good pictures, but it cannot take professional shots. The front camera with a resolution of 2 megapixels is designed for video calls and copes with its task adequately. By the way, both cameras are capable of recording video in Full HD resolution.
