Mhl interface what. MHL is a large screen mirroring technology. The main differences between MHL and other standards

IN technical characteristics my phone says:
Micro-USB 2.0 port with MHL interface support.
A dedicated HDMI cable is required. "
What is MHL and how to connect?

Mobile technology High definition Link (MHL) of the mobile audio-video interface combines the functionality of HDMI and MicroUSB interfaces, and serves to directly connect mobile devices to TVs and monitors that support high definition Full HD.

Thanks to MHL, a mobile phone or tablet can become the heart of home theater.
The MHL specification allows 1080p video at 60 frames per second, as well as 7.1-channel digital audio.

When buying a modern smartphone or tablet, you can be sure that it is able to provide video playback high resolution in optimal quality.
If the mobile device has MicroHDMI, then you don't need to think about such functionality.

However, the option with broadcasting a signal via HDMI has one noticeable drawback: a mobile device, be it a tablet or a smartphone, is very quickly discharged under such a serious load as playing high-definition video.

Two types of cables can be used to connect MHL: passive and active.

Passive MHL cable with MicroUSB and HDMI connectors for connecting mobile devices with MHL to display devices (monitors and TVs) with MHL support and provides full functionality of the standard.

The list of MHL compatible equipment does not look very long so far, but let's hope that only for now.
Among TVs, MHL support can be found, for example, in LG models (for example, 47LM8600), Samsung (for example, 46ES8000), Sony (KLV-40EX430), Sharp and Toshiba, Samsung S27B750VS monitors, LG IPS7 series and others.

The active MHL cable provides an additional MicroUSB connector for connecting a power adapter and is compatible with any display device that has an HDMI port and not having MHL support.
Without connecting an external power supply (5V, 1A and above), there will be no HDMI output signal.

Sometimes, when connecting, you need to restart your phone.
The disadvantage is the inability to control the smartphone from the TV remote control.

Instead of an active cable, you can use an MHL adapter, which also has a built-in MicroUSB connector for additional power.

MHL technology allows you to simultaneously view mobile content on big screen monitor (TV) with full sound reproduction and charge the battery of the connected mobile device.

MHL does not require any settings or drivers; a special chip is responsible for encoding and transmitting data in the "stuffing" of the mobile device.

MHL, like any data transmission standard, can be implemented in various physical forms.

The MicroUSB connector is currently the most popular in mobile devices, but in the future, it is possible that MHL will be tied to another connector if it gains sufficient popularity.

The technical specifications of some mobile phones indicate the presence of a microUSB port with support for the MHL interface. Users wonder - why do they need this technology?

What is MHL in a phone?

The MHL interface is a standard that allows you to use the microUSB connector as an HDMI port for transferring images from a mobile device to a TV. The specification provides broadcasting of video in resolution up to 1080p (Full HD) with multichannel audio. In other words, the smartphone is used as a translator (set-top box) - all actions in operating system including watching videos, displaying photos, or visiting websites.

The phone is connected to the TV via the MHL adapter:

Most of the adapters on sale require additional power for operation, although there are models powered by the built-in smartphone battery. Usually the price of such accessories is low, but do not rush to make a purchase. Not all modern smartphones support the MHL interface, so information transmission may not work even with the correct settings.

How do I know if my smartphone supports MHL?

To get started, you can visit the official MHL website, which has a list of devices that support the technology. On the page, you must enter the name of your smartphone and search. But there is a big problem - an incomplete directory. Users claim that some phones that exactly support the standard are not listed.

Therefore, it is better to use alternative option- install a program to check MHL support. It's called "MHL Checker" and is available for free at Google play... The application has a simple interface. After installation, click the "Check" button to start testing. After a few seconds, the results of the check will be displayed, although this method is not guaranteed to be accurate - users leave feedback about the program that it is capable of making mistakes.

Are these comments credible, or did the authors simply not understand the program or were checking for a different standard? It's difficult to say, so the only one hundred percent option for checking MHL on the phone is to connect the device to the TV through an adapter. If the image will be transmitted on the screen, then the interface is supported.

Mobile High-Definition Link or MHL is an interface standard that combines the functionality of a MicroUSB connector and HDMI interface... What is it for? Allows you to connect mobile devices to monitors or TVs, displaying images in excellent quality. So if you are going to connect your smartphone to the TV to display the image from the first to the last, the best option- take advantage of the MHL technology.

The connection is made using an MHL adapter. Here is one example from kebidu:

Most adapters require additional power, although there are some that work without additional power.

Adapters are inexpensive and can be purchased at many electronics stores. But is it worth it? The fact is that not all Android smartphones support MHL technology. The question is - how do you know that the device has support for this technology?

Some users refer to the MHL site (mhltech.org/devices.aspx?tid=1) for a list of devices that support MHL. However, at the time of this writing, there are not many modern smartphone models on the list that accurately support MHL. How to be?

You can try installing the MHL checker, which is an application for checking MHL support. Open the Play Market.

In search, write mhl checker, click on the search button.

Choose from the list, let it be Checker for MHL (HDMI). Install.

Launch. Click on the Check MHL (HDMI) button.

See if your device can support technology or not. In our example, it can.

However, in reviews to similar applications you can find messages that they are wrong. Whether this is so or not is difficult to say, so it's up to you to decide. In our opinion, the only sure way to check if a smartphone has MHL support is to use an adapter and connect the smartphone to a TV.

Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) technology first hit the market back in 2011. And since then it is a wired solution for mirroring pictures from displays to a large TV screen. portable devices has been implemented on more than 330 million devices, according to data from the MHL consortium. Among the devices supporting MHL technology, computer monitors, car video systems, and of course televisions and mobile devices.

Multifunctional MHL technology supports Full HD video and surround sound, just like wireless standard Miracast. In addition, MHL also allows you to recharge a connected mobile device, has a negligible time delay and provides the ability to control a mobile device from the TV remote control. MHL version 1.x is by far the most widely used, at the same time more and more devices such as smartphones appeared. Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Bravia KD-55X9004A TV that support MHL 2.x.

And in latest version MHL 3.0 added support for 4K video, increased charging current to 2A. All MHL versions must also support different types connectors, that is, they can work with different interfaces. However, the most common connectors are micro usb and HDMI

What do you need

MHL amazing flexible technology... With an active MHL adapter, you can connect your MHL-enabled smartphone and other sources even to displays without MHL support. However, the adapter usually has USB port in micro format and requires a separate power supply.

Passive MHL cable

If the receiver and source support this technology, a regular passive MHL cable is sufficient. Just remember, your TV needs to use a dedicated MHL input. MHL technology is plug-and-play with no additional configuration required.

While most MHL-enabled smartphones will be compatible with active and passive MHL accessories, there are Samsung smartphones (Galaxy S3, S4, Note 2 and Note 3) that need a dedicated interface adapter to go from 5 pins to 11. Because of these Samsung devices a dedicated 11-pin micro USB connector is used.

An exception to this is Samsung's active MHL 2.0 adapter, which can output up to 60fps at Full resolution HD. It can be used without an external power source, but does not allow charging the connected mobile device in this case.

Samsung MHL 2.0 Active Adapter and 5-to-11 Pin Converter

Please note that the full benefits of the MHL 2.0 standard are only available when all MHL connected devices and accessories support MHL version 2.

Pros and cons

Compared to Miracast technology and the closed standard Apple AirPlay, MHL stands out for its wide range of compatible products, ranging from mobile phone to car multimedia systems and home audio / video equipment. An even more important feature is the use of a wired connection, which minimizes the time lag between pictures on a large and small screen, thus, the interface is more suitable for games than wireless counterparts. However, the reduced response time also depends on the frame rate of the output video, which is highly dependent on settings.

We managed to get only 1080i video output with 50 frames per second (fps) for Samsung with the help of the universal active adapter MHL 1.0 Galaxy Note 2 release 2012 and TV 2010 Panasonic Viera VT20. Using the 2012 LG LM9600 TV panel with MHL function, it was possible to transmit a 1080p signal. But limited to only 30 frames per second, which practically does not allow playing fast-paced games. Frame rate did not increase with passive MHL cable and Samsung MHL 2.0 adapter. To achieve smoother 1080p video at 60 fps, we connected an MHL 2.0 certified Galaxy Note 3 to the LM9600 via an MHL 2.0 adapter.

Please also note that the 500mA current provided by MHL 1.0 including active adapters may not be sufficient to charge some mobile devices. Therefore, watching a movie or playing, you will drain the battery, although somewhat less than in stand-alone mode.

Meanwhile, using a compact mobile device with a dangling MHL adapter, power cord, and HDMI cable can be quite awkward, and a long passive MHL cable pulled through the living room is likely to be a little disturbing to those around you. We also checked the work of MHL with smartphones Sony Xperia Z, Htc one and Sony TVs Bravia W954 and Samsung F8000.

conclusions

Given the mediocre performance of MHL 1.x, we would only recommend MHL 2.x-capable devices that support 50Hz (or 60Hz) frame rates at 1080p, with higher charging power. external devices... This will ensure that video is copied from the small display to the large TV screen without visible lag. The latest version of the MHL 3.0 standard with support for 4K resolution is even more promising, although cables that restrict free movement will always be a disadvantage of this technology.

MobileHighDefinitionLink(or simply MHL) Is the technology by which the transmission of an image with high degree resolution, on a TV screen or computer. MHL - cables are used by those who have smartphones and tablet computers companies Samsung, Lg, Sony or Nokia... Most of the rest of the people have either never heard of this method of transmitting a "picture", or have a very vague idea about it.

What is MHL Standard?

To better understand what is the way of transmitting information MHL, you need to look at a different standard - HDMI used when connecting a DVD player to a TV receiver Blue-ray... Standard MHL similar in nature, but only it is designed to connect to the TV of mobile devices.

The described technology is the "brainchild" of the association of programmers and designers of several brands - Nokia, Toshiba, Samsung and Silicon Image. MHL- the cable created for this format has 5 pins in its connector. This allows video and audio information to be transmitted to the large screen at a resolution of 1080 ppi, 192 kHz and a circular sound factor of 7.1. MHL- the connectors are short, and the signal transmitted with its help can be converted into a signal HDMI.

If the device is equipped with the technology MHL, it does not oblige the user to use only it. With the help of the five pins in the connector, this technology can be built into different cables and connectors for transmitting audio and video signals through gadgets of different brands.

Working on the standard MHL continues, and its developers plan to expand functionality... In particular, in the future, the function of controlling the TV remotely, via a smartphone or tablet, should appear. By the way, when connecting a mobile device with a TV set equipped with MHL, gadgets in parallel replenish the charge of their battery.

Where can you find MHL technology?

If you search the Internet for devices that have the ability to transfer data using MHL, then you can find a sufficient number of them. The peculiarity of this technology is that it is usually embedded in a micro cable. USB, but at the same time the cable and connector itself can have various modifications.

Today the things in which there are MHL-technology, refer to accessories, since most often in the absence of support MHL TV panels need an adapter or adapter to convert the signal into HDMI(Otherwise, it will not be possible to “link” the mobile device and the TV). But in modern models of receivers Samsung and Lg this is not the case: most of them have full support the technology in question. The start of mass production of such TVs coincided with the release of the first mobile device with MHL - Samsung Galaxy SII... Since then, the number of gadgets equipped with MHL has been constantly increasing: today, some models of smartphones can connect to the TV in this way. Lg, Htc, Samsung Galaxy subsequent series, as well as receivers Onkyo.

Is MHL technology becoming more and more necessary and in demand?

Many people have a logical question: why today, with a sufficiently large number of different television connectors, add new ones, which, moreover, sometimes require an adapter - adapter. Ain't enough cables SCART, s-video, VGA and high quality communication method HDMI? What advantages should the new connection format have to confidently enter this list? And does it have MHL such advantages?

Have MHL there are two indisputable "pluses". The first is the small dimensions of the connectors and cables that fit perfectly into the mobility concept and are ideal for smartphones and tablets. The second important advantage is the ability to variably integrate technology MHL in different cables and connectors (for example, in USB, which is absolutely impossible in the case of HDMI).

But there are also obvious "disadvantages" when using the technology MHL... The main one can be demonstrated by the example of smartphones. Samsung Galaxy SIII and Galaxy SII... The point is that for a later Galaxy SIII was made MHL- a connector that has been modified from the same Galaxy accessory SII. So for other devices equipped with a data transfer standard MHL, a large number of types of the required connector are used. That is, when changing a device, each time the user will have to change the accessories necessary for the implementation of this technology, and the old cables and connectors will remain an unnecessary attribute.

And one more nuance due to which the technology MHL is not an unambiguously positive implementation in those devices that tens or even hundreds of millions of people use today. With the current level of technology development, there are many ways to transmit video and audio information. Many people now even use wireless formats - this is possible through local area networks using advanced technologies DLNA and Apple AirPlay, and in most cases this transfer takes place without loss of quality.

Precisely because of what is written in this short article, wired MHL technology cannot unequivocally take root in modern world Communication between various devices... And whether she will manage to firmly occupy her niche here in the near future - time will tell, but there is no 100% certainty of this.
