Positioning

The Nexus series originally emerged as Google's attempt to turn itself into not only an Android vendor, but a manufacturer as well. Using the first Nexus as an example, the company wanted to build its sales and then plunge headlong into this fascinating world, but nothing came of it. Then the Nexus line began to symbolize clean and not clouded by third-party shells Android, to which updates also arrive the fastest. But key feature In the Nexus line, the cost of such devices also became - it was minimal, and in terms of price / quality ratio, they outperformed almost any smartphone or tablet. For all time the most popular smartphone in the Nexus lineup there was a model from LG, Nexus 5. And the best-selling device is the Nexus 7 tablet, it even had two versions, and was produced by Asus. But once everything comes to an end, and the Nexus line will no longer develop, there is still one device ahead of it. The reason is that consumers expect low cost from Nexus, and all new devices are at the level of flagships of other companies, the example of Nexus 6 only confirms this. And people are not willing to pay this price, because they remember that the Nexus should cost a little. This is a prejudice, nevertheless, it is tenacious. Therefore, Google will launch its own brand for such devices, which will replace the Nexus.

We can assume that the Nexus 6 is to some extent the herald of this new era of "expensive" models with pure Android. The device becomes the first phablet since Android 5, and it turns out to be surprisingly interesting. It came as a complete surprise to me how over the past two years Motorola have been able to overcome their age-old problems and release such interesting devices that they can be safely called one of the best, here the Nexus 6 is no exception.

Who is this phablet for? It certainly has consumers among technology enthusiasts and those looking for pure android without any add-ons. But it is also a great device option for those who do not want to combine a phone and a tablet, planning to get by with one phablet. We can also recommend paying attention to it to everyone who wants to get an Android smartphone with maximum battery life and excellent performance, such a device for a couple of years. It turns out that the Nexus 6 is both a rational buy for growth, and also an interesting device for technology pioneers. It is not perfect, but it has a number of strong features that allow us to say that we have a very strong player in front of us. The only problem is that Motorola is hardly sold outside the US, although this will change after Lenovo acquired the company. The same Nexus 6 may appear in Russia officially in February or March, but this is still preliminary and very inaccurate information.

Design, dimensions, controls

In junior Motorola devices, you can choose panels from different materials, your phone acquires individuality, and, for example, wooden panels make a stunning impression on others. It's a pity, but Nexus 6 decided to adhere to the canons of the genre and settled on a monolithic case design, which can be written down as a disadvantage of this device. Over time, to change the battery, you will have to contact service center, you won't be able to do it yourself.

The design of the device is completely in style latest models from Motorola, it's easily recognizable. A semicircular back that fits well in the hand, however, we must make a reservation here, the Nexus 6 is very large, this is one of the largest phablets. It measures 159.3 x 83 x 10.1 mm and weighs 184 grams.

Compared to Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Let's start with the thickness of the case. 10.1 mm is a lot. But due to the fact that the back is made in an arc, this is the thickness in the middle, that is, the sides are noticeably thinner. And the device does not make any impression of enormous thickness, but it is rather big. Suitable for men, for women - only if they like very large devices.

The disadvantages include the fact that, unlike Galaxy Note 4, iPhone 6 Plus, here the width of the case is slightly larger (4-5 mm, but this difference is enough), and it is extremely difficult to work with the device with one hand. We can safely say that the Nexus 6 is a two-handed phablet, do not expect that you can handle it on the go and with one hand, you are unlikely to succeed. Of course, unless you have huge fingers and palms, in my far from the smallest hand this device looks big and feels exactly the same.

There are no complaints about weight, it is quite comfortable for such a device, and you can put up with it. I have no complaints about the quality of the body materials - the back panel is made of plastic, it is matte, of good quality, and does not wear out during normal handling. The front panel has Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The side frame is made of metal. Two colors - dark blue and dark white.

I like both solutions, although on the back panel the huge Nexus lettering plays too much in the light, it may not like it. Kitsch, which, by its incongruity, has turned into a design element. Due to the arc of the rear panel, it is more usual to place the phone on the front surface, subconsciously you always do it this way. Although it is possible and vice versa.

At the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, at the bottom there is a microUSB connector (version 2.0). On the right side surface there is an on / off button, a little below - a volume rocker. I really liked the fact that the power button was ribbed, outwardly it is almost invisible, but by touch you know exactly what is at hand. You can press the key without looking and unlock the device.

Back to the front panel, there is a 2MP front-facing camera. But the most interesting thing is two stereo speakers, they are quite loud, the sound is clear. Even covering them with your hands when holding the phone in landscape orientation does not degrade the sound. Our video shows this.

The nanoSIM-card slot is on the upper end, the tray is made very interesting and reliable.

In general, there are no complaints about the build quality and materials. And it can't be. Another thing is that the sect of fans of metal cases may consider that plastic is not an expensive enough material, although its cost is equal to the metal case in the same iPhone. It's just that from a practical point of view, it is more reliable material in a large device.

From the incomprehensible, I note that on the Motorola website in the list of characteristics there is a line "Water Resistant - Yes". That is, it is assumed that there is some kind of protection against water, but neither the type nor the class of protection is indicated. I was interested in this moment, and I contacted representatives of the company, who indicated that a special nano-coating is used in the entire line of smartphones, which repels water. This does not mean that smartphones need to be drowned under water. It is possible that they will survive after this, but maybe not, the manufacturer does not give such a guarantee and therefore did not receive a certificate of protection against water. There are quite a few videos on the network in which MOTO X is drowned in water and after that it works. The problem is that the phone will not start to fail immediately, but gradually, corrosion does not manifest itself instantly, this is a gradual process. But in any case, these devices have additional protection against water, and this is one of the differences between Motorola smartphones and other devices.

Display

The main supplier of AMOLED screens in the world is Samsung, while the company gives its competitors only screens from the old production line, which are 2-3 generations behind the current displays, which are positioned as SuperAMOLED. The differences between these screens will be typed into several pages of small text, I will try to list only the main ones:

  • Maximum brightness in automatic and manual mode is lower on AMOLED;
  • Higher power consumption when trying to increase the brightness of the screen, which becomes a critical drawback and immediately affects the operating time;
  • High power consumption when displaying video, and this is not observed when the UI is running, this is only related to video and games;
  • Less time before burnout points;
  • Less protection against mechanical influences, in particular, pushing through the screen;
  • The impossibility of implementing the increased energy saving mode due to the shortcomings of the matrix, the mode itself can be turned on, but the gain will be minimal;
  • Worse color gamut, lack of profiles for color customization.

I think that even the listed differences will be enough to understand how different these products are. Due to Samsung's marketing, many, reading that the AMOLED screen, immediately automatically put the Super prefix, but this is not so. Moreover, it is a misconception that SuperAMOLED is purely a marketing term that does not hide any technical features.

The screen in the Nexus 6 is a regular AMOLED, made using old technology, and a number of limitations follow from this. Brightness and vividness of colors, maximum brightness of the backlight. In these parameters, the screen outright loses to both the Galaxy Note 4 and the iPhone 6 Plus - despite the difference in the type of screens, they are both brighter, and the colors are more vivid. The Nexus 6 lacks brightness and this is a problem with the type of screen and its generation.

The technical characteristics of the screen are excellent - 5.96 inches diagonal, QHD resolution (2560x1440 pixels, 493 dpi). There is an automatic brightness control, it does its job well, although I set the screen to 45-50 percent of the maximum (in Note 4 I set it to about 25-30 percent, since there is much more margin there).

In Android 5.0 and higher, the Ambient Display function appeared, when a message or notification arrives, it is displayed on a part of the screen, the entire screen does not light up. You can also pick up your phone and see all your messages on a black and white background. This is a very nice feature of the device.

The Nexus 6's display is its weak point, although everything in the world is relative and the screen is slightly above average. Another thing is that he is inferior to his classmates. You quickly get used to it, and it becomes familiar, but you pick up other phablets and again you see these differences.

The oleophobic coating is not bad, handprints remain, but in the same amount as on other devices of this class. The viewing angles are not bad, the colors can be slightly inverted, but this is almost invisible. There are no special power saving modes typical for the latest generation AMOLED screens.

Of the possible minuses, I would like to note a kind of scandal with burnout of dots in the new Nexus 6, which began with this video.

In practice, this is not a burnout of dots, but the features of the screen, when changing the picture to another, the print will also change over time. That is, the effect will not be observed. By the way, this is one of the reasons why there is no power saving mode, these defects will be clearly visible in it. It's a shame Motorola simply doesn't have access to the latest types of screens, they have to choose the best available. And such screens are much inferior to those in Samsung's products. You just have to compare them in real life to see the difference.

Battery

The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 3220 mAh, it is curious that the battery is exactly the same in the Galaxy Note 4. Motorola claims that the device can work for a day at full load. Without specifying how exactly the total load is measured, what is included in this concept, and so on. It is difficult to judge this without details, but I can note that the company is more likely to be right than not.

To begin with, the weakest point in the phone's operation is games and video playback, this is directly related to the display and its power consumption in these modes. If for video you can achieve 7-7.5 hours of work (maximum screen brightness), then for games it is about 4-5 hours. It's sad, because competitors play videos for at least 10 hours, or even more.

But this is where the sadness ends, since in ordinary applications, with typical use of a smartphone, no problems are observed, but there are only advantages. The total runtime in this mixed mode is longer than the Note 4, by about 20-30 percent. And I think that this is directly related to Android 5, since this version has greatly improved power consumption.

What will happen to the Note 4 when it gets Android 5 is unclear, but I think given the same battery capacity and lower screen power consumption, the numbers will rise. In any case, we will be able to check this in the next month, but for now the Nexus 6 offers more runtime in everyday modes, with the exception of video and games. Moreover, the video also means YouTube or something like that.

Now it is necessary to note a few chips that are in the Nexus 6. I'll start with a simple one, the phone has a built-in wireless charging of the Qi standard. There is almost no sense from it, since the battery will have to be charged all night, and it will not work to fully charge it, about 8-10 percent of the battery capacity will remain, which will not be used.

The second feature is much more useful, it is fast battery charging, which is called Turbo Charge, the corresponding inscription is on the charger. It is based on Qualcomm's proprietary technology called Quick Charge 2.0, which is also used in the Note 4. If Samsung claims that it charges 50 percent of the battery in 30 minutes, then Motorola speaks of 15 minutes and 6 additional hours of work. This does not change the essence, the technology is the same, but the charging circuits and current differ. Motorola has a non-removable battery, so the charging option was made more gentle, the total time is about 1 hour 35 minutes (1 hour 20 minutes for Note 4). With a typical Motorola 5V, 1.5A charger, you will charge the Nexus 6 for about 3 hours and 45 minutes.

The bottom line is that a full day of work for Nexus 6 is a reality. Even under heavy load, that is, about 3 hours of screen operation in different programs, plus other activity, data transfer. It is quite comparable with the Note 4, but it will not work up to two days of work here, especially if you actively use the data transfer.

Memory, chipset, performance

The model is available in two versions - 32 and 64 GB. I had a 32 GB device, about 25 GB is free for all your data, there are no memory cards traditionally for the Nexus line, which is a serious disadvantage for a device of this class on Android. Volume random access memory- 3 GB, which is more than enough for all current tasks.

The device has a chipset from Qualcomm - Snapdragon 805, it is a quad-core with a maximum frequency of 2.7 GHz (28 nm process technology), a graphics coprocessor Adreno 420 (one of the Note 4 variations has exactly the same filling). In synthetic tests, this device shows some of the best results.

In everyday life, the UI flies, I did not notice any delays, problems or shortcomings. Among the shortcomings I would like to note is that sometimes the device starts to warm up in ordinary tasks (in the camera area). The temperature reaches 41-43 degrees, some applications refuse to work.

This happens very rarely, but is due to the fact that Motorola decided not to limit the performance of the chipset, considering that the heating will be insignificant almost always. However, everything is not so simple. I will not inflate an elephant out of a fly, since the problem is not permanent, I ran into it only a couple of times. In general, you need to know that this is one of the fastest devices and there are no problems with performance.

USB, Bluetooth, communication capabilities

BT 4.1 version, all profiles are supported, which can be considered a nice feature of the device. Depending on the model number, different frequencies are supported for LTE, see below what they are in which device.

For Wi-Fi there is support for 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, dual-band 2x2 (MIMO). The phone has NFC, but the USB 2.0 version.

Camera

The camera module is from Sony (IMX214), it has a resolution of 13 megapixels, f 2.0, there is optical stabilization. The dual LED flash is integrated into a plastic bezel.

A (surprise surprise) Google Camera is used as a shooting utility. In my opinion, this is an obvious simplification of the software, since it becomes iPhone-shaped, there are no additional settings, for example, there is no ISO, exposure compensation and other similar "little things". It's good that, in theory, you can put your own programs for shooting, where the software is able to work with these parameters.

I liked the quality of the photos under normal conditions, although when comparing them with the Note 4 and iPhone 6 Plus, I will prefer the latter two.

Nexus 6 iPhone 6 Plus Note 4

The flash works moderately, at close distances it strongly overexposes the picture.

No flash With flash

Digital zoom up to x4.

4K recording is supported, but by default the video is recorded at 1080p (30 frames per second).

In short, the camera is far from the best, but quite good, above average. The principle of operation is the same as in the iPhone: took out and photographed.

Software features, or pure Android 5

You can watch our video about the changes that Android 5 brings.

One of the little things that I don't like compared to the previous version is the lack of date selection in the data transfer information (settings menu). There is no information about how long the phone has worked since the last charge, it is not explicitly presented, the menu shows an assumption about how long the phone will work. These are trifles, but they have always helped me in my work, now it has become not so easy.

You may have seen different applications in Material Design on other devices, Google has updated almost all system programs. But there is one hitch, not having a device originally created on Android 5 in front of your eyes, you will not understand how it all works together. Using the Nexus 6 as an example, I can note that it turned out not just nice, but very, very good. There is a solid impression, everything works well together. Below are screenshots to give you an impression of the interface on this device.

Impressions

Have Motorola phones a system of several microphones is used, which provides good sound quality for your interlocutor, in different conditions of a conversation, including on a noisy street. The volume of the stereo speakers is not maximum, the same Note 4 sounds louder and sharper, but not so soft. For example, it is more pleasant to watch movies on the Nexus 6, the sound is larger and better.

There are no complaints about the quality of the connection, but from the point of view of displaying the network signal, many may think that there is a flaw in the radio path. I tried to work with SIM cards of all the big three in Moscow, the signal jumped from regular 3G to H + and then LTE, and at some moments it disappeared altogether. The impression was that the phone was falling out of the network, although it could immediately ring. Or you could dial as well Mobile Internet worked great. The problem is that the signal display algorithm is configured for North American operators and has its own specifics; the device has no real problems in this aspect.

In the US, the 32GB model costs $ 649 excluding taxes, and the 64GB model costs $ 699. It's not cheap at all, especially for the Nexus line, but it is comparable to other phablets. In my opinion, the main competitors for the Nexus 6 may be the leaders of this market - Note 4 and iPhone 6 Plus, you can watch a video comparison with them right now.

I don't see any point in repeating in text what I said in the video, I will only note that a buyer's guide to phablets will be released soon, in which we will focus on all devices, their strong and weaknesses... You can also remember that there are many other models on the market, from the latter I will note the Huawei Mate 7.

It is not known when the Nexus 6 will officially appear in Russia, at the end of February at best. The cost is also unknown, but it is unlikely to be affordable and small. With the Note 4 price of 37 thousand rubles, this device remains the preferred choice - soon it will receive Android 5, it has a stylus, a better camera, better screen... But on the Nexus side, there are two speakers, while there is still running time, wireless charging (if you need it), pure Android without shells. Most importantly, the Nexus 6 captivates with the design and the way Android works on it. I miss many TouchWiz features in it, they are convenient. But the way they made a single system, how it all works together, makes you fall in love with the device. It is of high quality, good, which means that it cannot be cheap. The Nexus 6 is definitely worth its money. Although technically not at all as perfect as we would like.

I will not hide that, like everyone else latest smartphones from Motorola, I really liked the Nexus 6. He has his own character, he is cool. But I would not change the Note 4 for it, and for many reasons, after all, Note remains the leader in this segment, which it created several years ago. The rest are catching up so far, and not very quickly. But we will wait for the buyer's guide, where we will discuss these issues in more detail.

Thank you for the device provided by the Up-House store.

In 2012, Google bought Motorola Mobility. The event inspired many hopes, at least users expected to quickly see the new "nexus" released by Motorola. Aspirations were destined to come true, but they had to wait much longer than expected. At the time of the announcement, users were in for another "surprise" - the new Nexus were not as affordable as they were used to seeing, the price of new products became comparable to what other manufacturers would forgive for devices of a similar class. It turns out that the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 have exactly one feature that sets them apart from their competitors - the fresh version of Android 5.0 Lollipop, which allows you to feel the real Google Experience. In this review we will try to figure out why Motorola Nexus 6 turned out to be so expensive and whether it is worth the money.

The Motorola Nexus 6 comes in an unusually large cardboard box. It is designed similarly to a tablet - a large number 6 is squeezed out on a white background. Otherwise, we face the kingdom of minimalism, emphasized by the contents: a USB cable, a Turbo Charger, a paper clip and documentation.

Design and usability

Nexus 6 is similar to the latest Motorola smartphones and most of all - increased. This can be treated in different ways, but overall it is more good than bad. Nexus 6 received a similar metal frame and a proprietary convex back with the Motorola logo in a small recess.

On the screen, you can see the grilles of stereo speakers with a plastic insert protruding above the glass surface, which allows you to calmly lay the smartphone with the screen down. The display is biased towards the bottom, which looks quite reasonable given the fact that most of the time it displays virtual keys system management.

Almost in the middle of the right side panel, it is easy to find a paired volume rocker and a power button with a ribbed surface. The keys are not raised high, so they will seem comfortable for both people with small hands and large ones. At the same time, the power key is always unmistakably identified due to its excellent tactile sensations.

From other elements on the case, you can find connectors Micro USB, 3.5 mm and a slot for a NanoSIM card.

Among the available colors are dark blue (as in the overview) and white.

Selection of materials and build quality are at a high level. The construction is rigid, all parts fit well. The plastic of the back cover is pleasant to the touch, but over time, small stains remain on it.

Since the Motorola Nexus 6 turned out to be a six-inch phablet, the dimensions of the smartphone are impressive. It is somewhat larger than its counterparts, but the difference in the usability of such devices is minimal, it is very difficult to operate them with one hand. In the case of Nexus 6, I would like to see narrower screen bezels, according to this parameter, the smartphone does not look very modern, but thanks to the rounded lid, it fits comfortably in the hand.

Display

Motorola Nexus 6 received an AMOLED display with a diagonal of 5.96 inches with a resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels (493 ppi). The choice of this type of matrix is due to the presence of the Ambient Display function in the smartphone. When the Nexus 6 is lifted off the table, a dim white backlight illuminates to let you know the time and see missed notifications. At the same time, a minimum of energy is consumed, because only the active pixels of the screen work.

In terms of objective performance, with the exception of a very high resolution, this is a typical AMOLED display. The minimum screen brightness is 20.4 cd / m2, and the maximum is 297 cd / m2. Factory calibration accuracy is on average for flagships. The Motorola Nexus 6 display has a slightly lower color temperature, which gives the image a warm hue, an underestimated gamut and a wide color gamut.

The overall color rendition has a slight bias towards greenish tones. Together with the warm color reproduction, this may not be pleasant, especially if you are used to a more "correct" picture that good IPS screens give, but you get used to the display literally in a day, and the difference becomes imperceptible.

Sun legibility is normal, colors are duller, but information remains readable. The quality of the oleophobic coating is average, the glass collects a certain amount of prints. They are not very noticeable, most of the screens of expensive smartphones have a coating of the same quality.

Screen comparison Motorola Nexus 6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4:

Hardware platform

The heart of the Motorola Nexus 6 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset, which includes 4 Krait 450 cores operating at up to 2.7 GHz and an Adreno 420 video core. 32 GB, there is a version with 64 GB of internal memory, traditionally there is no memory card slot. Communication modules are presented with support for all current mobile networks, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC.

Among those actually sold smartphones Nexus 6 is one of the most productive. This is confirmed by both the results of synthetic tests and personal impressions. Everything is run by Android Lollipop version 5.0.1. You can familiarize yourself with the features of the latest version of Google's mobile OS at.

Calls, multimedia

In terms of multimedia capabilities, the Nexus 6 performs well. The quality of music playback is similar to other flagships, but the maximum volume is average - simple "plugs" the smartphone shakes without problems, but when using on-ear headphones, for example Creative aurvana Live !, the volume will have to be increased almost to the maximum.

The standard video player supports a small number of codecs, so it would be better to install a third-party solution right away. Moreover, Motorola Nexus 6 wants to watch a video - the large screen and front stereo speakers are inclined to this. The latter stand out for their pleasant sound and excellent volume reserve, they are of higher quality than the speakers in, and most other smartphones. In this parameter, the Nexus 6 managed to get as close as possible to HTC smartphones with their BoomSound speakers. During a conversation, the speaker has a good volume reserve, it is comfortable to communicate in any conditions. The strength of the vibrating alert is slightly above average.

Working hours

The Nexus 6 has a non-separable body with a 3220 mAh battery. Motorola very simply characterizes the battery life of a smartphone - about 24 hours in a mixed mode of use. These data are confirmed in practice. With an average load, the Nexus 6 will work for a day and a half, showing 3-4 hours of screen life. This is far from the best result among modern phablets, but record holders are usually equipped with lower resolution screens and more capacious batteries. In any case, "before our eyes" the smartphone is not discharged, even with active use, it easily survives until the evening.

Nice features include support wireless charging Qi standard, and a more useful feature is the implementation of the Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 standard. Together with the included Turbo Charger, you can fully charge your smartphone in an hour and a half. The first 80% of the Nexus 6 charge takes an hour, then the charging speed gradually decreases.

Cameras

The smartphone received two cameras. The main camera has a 13 megapixel sensor, optical stabilization, the ability to shoot 4K video and a dual LED flash inscribed in a transparent rim around the camera lens.

The front one has a resolution of 2 megapixels and can shoot FullHD video. Used for shooting google app a camera with a minimum of possible settings. Like the LG Nexus 5, there is a dedicated HDR + shooting mode enabled by default.

If we talk about the camera from the point of view of characteristics, then we will face a completely typical solution. It feels like the smartphone focuses and shoots at normal speed, but switching between normal shooting and HDR + takes a few seconds, which is obscenely long for a smartphone of this level.

The quality of photos in daytime in natural light is good. When shooting indoors, the pictures are already a little worse, sometimes the smartphone takes longer time to focus. Getting a good card in the evening or at night will be much more difficult.

The front camera of the Motorola Nexus 6 is quite ordinary. The wide-angle lens is not used, but several people can easily fit into the frame on an outstretched arm.

Outcomes

The hero of the review turned out to be a pleasant phablet. Traditionally for Motorola devices, it received a high-quality case and excellent stereo speakers. Belonging to the Nexus series ensured the maximum performance and the latest version operating system Android. Perhaps for the fans of both American companies to create best device it was impossible.

On the other hand, the Nexus 6, like all previous smartphones in the line, is not without its drawbacks, but now you have to pay the full price for them without any discounts. It is the price that is the main disadvantage of this smartphone, because most competitors will offer at least the same quality for a much more humane hryvnia cost.

Good stereo speakers

Just look at the datasheet and it becomes obvious that the Nexus 6P can compete with the flagship models of the leading smartphone manufacturers. Everything that is fashionable today, it has: a large display with Quad HD-resolution, modern type LPDDR4 RAM, a fingerprint scanner, laser autofocus of the main camera. The Nexus 6P also has something completely outlandish - for example, a brand new connector USB Type-C... All this feast of technology is hiding in an aluminum case.

Everything, it would seem, is great, but they ask for such happiness fifty thousand rubles - plus or minus the same or a little more than they want for others flagship smartphones 2015 year. This means that the demand from it will be "in full", without any discounts at a low cost, as was the case with the past Google Nexus. Well, you should definitely clarify that the Chinese company Huawei developed the Nexus 6P for Google, and its predecessor, the Nexus 6, was the work of Motorola.

The Nexus 6P is the first Google Phone to feature an anodized aluminum body. Before him, all Nexus were finished with plastic - including the one that came out at the same time as the 6P. Subjectively, working with a metal device is much more pleasant, but this is purely a matter of taste. The Nexus 6P turned out to be quite large - it is hardly possible to use it with one hand: you either have to shift the device in your palm or hold it with your other hand. The smartphone weighs a lot - 178 grams, and you can feel it with prolonged communication with it. The thickness of the case is very small - 7.3 millimeters.

The controls are traditional for Android: there are no hardware keys on the front panel of the Nexus 6P. There are speaker slots at the top and bottom, and the lens is located at the top left. front camera.

Google Nexus 6P - bezel

The thickness of the side frames around the display is small - about two millimeters. The screen of the gadget occupies about 72% of the front panel area - a very good indicator, there is not much “extra” space here. The front of the device is covered with a sheet of protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Despite the presence of an oleophobic layer, it is quite easily soiled - but it can be cleaned with any cloth at hand.

Google Nexus 6P with screen on

It's easy to get used to the Nexus 6P - the layout of the controls is completely standard. The power and volume keys are located on the right side, right under the thumb of the right hand. It is noteworthy that the lock button is textured, and the volume rocker is smooth - this makes it easy to blindly find the desired key. The buttons have a short and distinct stroke.

Google Nexus 6P - side end

The slot for installing the Nano-SIM is located on the left side of the device. A universal 3.5 mm headphone jack is located at the top end. Hiding on the bottom edge is a mysterious USB Type-C, which we will discuss in detail below. For now, we will limit ourselves to mentioning that it is not compatible with standard Micro-USB 2.0 / 3.0 cables. This means that the cord for charging the Nexus 6P will have to be carried with you, since this standard is still unpopular - most likely, neither friends nor colleagues will have the required wire.

The powerful stuffing of this smartphone with big screen runs Android 6 without any skins or third-party add-ons. The device has an excellent ultra-clear screen, attractive design and quality camera... But at what cost? All the pros and cons of the "purebred" novelty were found out by Vesti.Hi-tech

Many well-known companies, including HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, were involved in the release of "reference" smartphones under the Nexus brand together with Google. As you know, these devices use an unmodified interface and stock Android apps. Last year, to demonstrate the capabilities of version 6.0 (Marshmallow), two new "Googlephones" from this series were presented. One of them - (see) released by LG, the other - Nexus 6P - Huawei.

Design, ergonomics

The new smartphone with a large 5.7-inch screen is the first in the Nexus line to receive an anodized aircraft-grade aluminum body. The new product from Huawei (Nexus 6P) is significantly slimmer than its 6-inch plastic predecessor - Motorola Nexus 6, it turned out to be not only thinner (7.3 mm versus 10.06 mm), but lighter (178 g versus 184 g). At the same time, the dimensions of both smartphones in terms of are 159.3x77.8 mm and 159.26x82.98 mm, respectively. But in comparison with the 5.7-inch glass-metal, the new "standard" looks like this: 7.3 mm versus 7.6 mm; 178 g vs 171 g; 159.3x77.8 mm versus 153.2x76.1 mm. For the Nexus 6P cases in Russia, they chose two colors - metallic silver and graphite gray. For the test we got the device in the first color, which, generally speaking, looks more advantageous and, perhaps, even premium.

The display with on-screen buttons "Back", "Home" and "Recent applications" in the form of "triangle", "circle", "square" icons, occupying about 72% of the entire front surface, protects the latest generation of protective glass - Corning Gorilla Glass 4 with oleophobic coating.

Decorative grilles for stereo speakers are provided on the inserts below and above the screen.

At the same time, the "spoken" microphone and one of the microphones for noise cancellation (there are three microphones in total) are hidden behind the same grilles.

In addition, the top insert houses the front camera lens, charging / event LED indicator, light and proximity sensors.

There is only one closed slot on the left edge, which hides a tray designed to install one nanoSIM (4FF) subscriber identification module. The dimensions of the tray in terms of it are quite possible to adapt it for two such modules. Why this has not been done is not clear. The key for the slot lock is included with the smartphone (you can use a thin paper clip as a lock pick).

On the right edge, the volume rocker and the power / lock button were together.

At the same time, the surface of the latter received a carved texture, which makes it easy to distinguish it by touch.

On the upper end, the 3.5 mm audio headset connector remained alone,

while at the bottom there is a symmetrical USB Type-C connector for charging and synchronizing with a computer.

At the bottom of the metal back, adorned with a large Nexus logo and less visible Huawei,

took care of the radio-transparent plastic insert for the antennas.

In the upper part of the same panel, there is a slightly protruding platform, protected by dark glass, under which the lens of the main camera, a double LED flash and a laser rangefinder (for autofocus) are hidden.

Slightly below there is a hole for the second microphone for noise reduction, and even lower - a round capacitive platform of the Nexus Imprint fingerprint scanner slightly recessed into the body.

The rough matte surface of the back panel allows you to more or less securely hold the smartphone in the palm of your hand. At the same time, it is unlikely that it will be possible to effectively use the 5.7-inch device with one hand. And the tools for this are simply not available in the settings of the Nexus 6P. By the way, smartphones with large screens, colloquially nicknamed "shovels", are disliked by many, if only because not every pocket is suitable for carrying them.

Screen, camera, sound

For the Nexus 6P display, a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED matrix was chosen, which provides a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, also called WQHD (Wide Quad HD, QHD or just 2K). At the same time, the density of pixels per inch, according to the manufacturer's calculations, is 518 ppi (theoretically, about 515 ppi). Unlike other smartphones with AMOLED screens, where additional profiles are usually available for color correction, the Nexus 6P will have to be content with factory settings and "acid" colors (the latter, of course, a matter of taste). True, you can tap the build number several times in the "About phone" settings section so that the "For Developers" section appears in the main menu. There it is proposed to use the option of the sRGB mode, the activation of which reduces the gamut and makes the colors (possibly subjective) less vivid.

Quite good anti-glare properties of the screen are complemented by a decent margin of brightness, which allows you to comfortably use your smartphone, even in sunlight. The brightness level is proposed to be adjusted either manually or using it automatic tuning by light sensor ("Adaptive control"). The capacitive screen of the Nexus 6P supports multi-touch, while the MultiTouch Test and AntTuTu Tester programs have confirmed that up to ten simultaneous clicks are recognized. On the protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which should protect the screen not only from scratches, but also when dropped, provided an oleophobic layer. What such a large display is best suited for is clear from its name - Cinematic. By the way, if you enable the "Disable sleep mode" option in the screen settings, then, taking the device in hand, you can without unlocking, albeit in monochrome, see the current time, date, day of the week, and most importantly - received notifications.

Smartphone Nexus 6P got the same main camera as its "one-year old", when the 12.3-megapixel sensor is located on a 1 / 2.3-inch BSI-matrix (Sony IMX377 Exmor R). The fast lens (f / 2.0 aperture) and the large pixel size of the sensor (1.55 microns) promise to capture more light and get sharp images with high level detailing. However, unlike its predecessor - Motorola Nexus 6, the camera of the new "standard" was left without optical stabilization... However, the obligatory kit includes a laser autofocus and a dual LED flash. The last color rendering index - CRI (Color Rendering Index) is equal to 90. The fact is that two different types light sources can have the same color temperature, but reproduce colors differently. Therefore, the CRI is defined as a measure of the degree to which the color of an object illuminated by a light source deviates from its color when illuminated by a reference light source of comparable color temperature. By the way, the CRI of sunlight is taken as 100.

The maximum possible image resolution for the main camera is 4032x3024 pixels (12.2 MP) with the classic aspect ratio of 4: 3 and 3840x2160 pixels (8.3 MP) with an aspect ratio of 16: 9. Examples of photos can be viewed.

For the quality of selfies in the Nexus 6P, there is a front-facing 8-megapixel camera with an optical matrix size of 1 / 3.2 inches and a pixel side of 1.4 microns (Sony IMX179 Exmor R). Its lens aperture is f / 2.4. Note that the stock application does not provide any additional funds for decorating "crossbows". The maximum resolution for the classic aspect ratio (4: 3) is 3264x2448 pixels (8 MP), and for a widescreen frame (16: 9) - 2688x1512 pixels (4.1 MP).

If the main camera can shoot video in 4K mode (3840x2160 pixels, 16: 9) at 30 fps, then for the front camera the best quality- This is Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16: 9) with the same frame rate. At 720p, the main camera can shoot at a frame rate of 120 or 240 fps and slow down playback by 4 or 8 times, respectively. All content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - sound).

The settings of the stock application "Camera" allow you to determine the aspect ratio and quality of shooting, as well as enable electronic video stabilization. The menu offers three scene modes - "Panorama", "Panorama" and "Blur" (change the depth of field). The HDR + icon in the upper right corner of the screen turns on the mode of the same name, when several images taken with different exposures are superimposed on each other to obtain the final image in which both light and dark areas are equally well developed. Switching between photo and video shooting modes is performed by swipes (right, left).

Each of the two speakers on the front of the smartphone has its own Smart PA (Power Amplifier). These external radiators provide a fairly high quality sound almost up to maximum volume. By the way, sometimes it may seem that the lower, "multimedia" speaker is trying harder than the "spoken" one. FM-tuner, as usual in all "nexus", is also absent. Not on the list standard programs and "Dictaphone".

Filling, performance

As a hardware platform, the Nexus 6P chose an 8-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994) processor with big.LITTLE GTS (Global Task Scheduling) architecture, where, thanks to heterogeneous multi-processing, all available cores can be used simultaneously. At the same time, the v2.1 version of this chip is used, which, in particular, is distinguished by an increased clock frequency of the graphics accelerator.

Eight processor cores are divided into two clusters, in the first - four ARM Cortex-A57s operate at a frequency of 2.0 GHz, and in the second - four ARM Cortex-A53s, but at a frequency of 1.5 GHz. All graphics workloads in MSM8994 are handled by the Adreno 430 accelerator with support for OpenGL ES 3.1. The highlight of the Snapdragon 810 is the built-in LTE modem with Advanced (Cat. 6) option. It also provides support for Bluetooth, USB and NFC interfaces. The basic configuration of the device is complemented by 3 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, which has a lower power consumption than, for example, LPDDR3. In general, as a rule, there are no questions about the power of a smartphone even on resource-intensive tasks (including 3D games) - usually everything just "flies" without a hint of slowing down. In terms of performance, the Nexus 6P falls into the "big league", although there it is not a record holder.

This can be seen, for example, from the results of synthetic tests AnTuTu Benchmark and benchmarks Vellamo (Multicore, Metal).

Considering the WQHD screen resolution, the Nexus 6P performed very confidently in the Epic Citadel visual test when successively changing the settings from High Performance, through High Quality to Ultra High Quality, showing an average frame rate of 56.9, 55.5 and 43.8 fps, respectively. ...

The smartphone performed quite well on the universal gaming benchmark 3DMark, where the result obtained on the recommended Sling Shot tests (ES 3.1) was 1,459 points.

But the total number of points earned by the Nexus 6P on the Base Mark OS II cross-platform benchmark was 1,486.

For the test, we got a smartphone model with 64 GB of internal memory (there is an option with 32 GB), where about 53.6 GB was available, and of course, even less is available. Unfortunately, there is no slot for expanding this storage here, which is typical for Google phones. Support for USB-OTG (USB Host) technology, when an ordinary USB flash drive can be connected to the device, could not be tested, due to the lack of a corresponding cable. As follows from the official specification, the baud rate complies with the USB 2.0 interface. Note that the minimum capabilities of the file manager (the application is not available in stock Android) are included in the smartphone settings (section "Storage and USB drives").

One subscriber identification module of the nanoSIM format (4FF) is intended for voice communication and the Internet, which also works with an LTE modem (Cat. 6, up to 300 Mbps). Among the supported 4G frequency bands are the "Russian troika" - FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz) and Band 20 (800 MHz).

The set of communications includes, among other things, a 2-band Wi-Fi module 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (2.4 and 5 GHz), NFC and Bluetooth 4.2 LE. At the same time, in the latter interface, the speed of information exchange between devices is increased while simultaneously reducing power consumption.

The multi-system receiver will help in determining the position and navigation. Even indoors, satellites from the GPS and GLONASS constellations are quickly searched for. There is also support for A-GPS technology (coordination over Wi-Fi and cellular networks).

The Nexus 6P has a 3,450 mAh non-removable lithium-polymer battery, just 230 mAh more than its predecessor, the Motorola Nexus 6 (3,220 mAh). Fast charging of the Nexus 6P battery requires a dedicated 15-watt adapter, which, alas, is incompatible with the Qualcomm Quick Charge specification. The maximum output current of this accessory at a voltage of 5 V reaches 3 A. Theoretically, the time for full filling of the battery in this case is 1 hour 25 minutes. The manufacturer also indicates that after 10 minutes of recharging the battery, its energy is enough for 7 hours of device operation. It was not possible to check all this, since the smartphone came to us for testing without a power adapter at all.

On the AnTuTu Tester battery tests, the smartphone earned 7,819 points. This is not a bad result, given the fact that, for example, with a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen ohm (WQHD resolution) scored about the same points. Every hour of playing test videos in MP4 format (hardware decoding) and Full HD at maximum brightness reduced the battery power of the Nexus 6P by about 10%.

The power saving mode can be programmed in the settings when the battery level reaches 5% or 15%. To conserve battery power, performance is reduced, and vibration, geolocation, and background data usage are limited.

Features of the software

Smartphone Nexus 6P runs on Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) operating system without any "impurities". This, in fact, is the main advantage of "googlephones", which in the first place receive all the changes and additions to the firmware. So, you can see that the first update to version 6.0.1 has already passed.

As you can see, the "material design" of the interface has remained in its place, and about all the main differences of the "six" from the previous Android version can be read in our review (see).

It is convenient to use the Nexus Imprint fingerprint scanner to unlock your smartphone. Fingerprint registration is performed in a few taps, and the reading process itself is literally instantaneous. Up to five scans of papillary patterns can be stored in the smartphone's memory. Since fingerprint recognition is less secure than graphic key, password or PIN-code, fingerprint blocking must be duplicated by them.

Purchase, conclusions

As a benchmark for smartphones with a large WQHD screen, the Nexus 6P fulfills its mission quite adequately, although, of course, it was not without its drawbacks. This "purebred" device received a thin metal case, which hides quite powerful filling, quite sufficient for the successful implementation of the basic features of the sixth version of Android. At the same time, Super AMOLED-matrix and a capacious battery provide good autonomy, and a fingerprint scanner on the back panel allows you to conveniently unlock the device.

For a certain category of users, the Nexus 6P may seem too large in size and therefore inconvenient, but this is an objective property of all "shovels" without exception. Manufacturers usually try to minimize this inherent flaw with software options in the settings. The obvious disadvantage of all "nexuses" is the lack of a slot for expanding memory with microSD cards, and the Nexus 6P is no exception. In addition, if there is a spacious tray for subscriber identification modules, space is used only for one nanoSIM card. I was also somewhat surprised by the fact that, unlike its predecessor (Motorola Nexus 6), the camera of the Nexus 6P lost optical stabilization.

From the implementation of the standard, the maximum possibilities are usually expected at the minimum cost, as was the case, for example, for the one that became very popular for this reason. Alas, the minimum for the Nexus 6P is clearly local. The sky-high exchange rates, of course, made a significant contribution to the formation of prices, and yet. The version with 64 GB of memory was estimated at 52,990 rubles, with 32 GB a little less - 49,990 rubles. Currently, the official store shop.huawei.ru does not sell the device at all, while for the dull it is indicated that no deliveries are expected. Indeed, well-known flagship models are offered for that kind of money, which makes the choice in favor of a "purebred" smartphone at the official price not entirely obvious. The only advantage that will be difficult to argue with is the relevance of updates Nexus firmware 6P. Enthusiasts who are ready to disregard the official guarantee for this can buy a "gray" device from "suitcase importers" at a price of 43,000 rubles for the 32GB version.
