Iphone 6 plus features and capabilities. Interesting iPhone features worth taking advantage of. We respond to events without minimizing applications

September 25 successfully started iPhone sales 6s and 6s Plus. The first reviews and tests of new products have already begun to appear on the Web. According to journalists and the first owners of the coveted devices, the iPhone 6s can be called the most significant update to the line of smartphones from Apple.

Today we will tell you what to try first after buying a brand new iPhone 6s.

1. 3D Touch Gestures

As main feature"Eski" is definitely a display with support for 3D Touch. New pressure sensing technology can work wonders. Users are opening up new frontiers in smartphone use. And, despite the fact that the function may seem useless to some, the first reviews from iPhone 6s owners say the opposite.

“I felt like the glass panel of the screen was disappearing altogether, and I clicked directly on the app icon,” writes Walt Mossberg of The Verge. - 3D Touch reminded me of working with right click mice […]".

Until you try out a feature, it's hard to understand those who praise it. Just imagine how much time you can save by using the preview mode or directly jumping to the desired action in applications.

2. "Live" photos

Another unique feature of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The camera is capable of capturing the movement of an object just like when shooting a video. At the same time, one and a half seconds are saved in memory before the camera shutter is released and one and a half seconds after. This creates the effect of living photographs.

3. The keyboard turns, the keyboard turns ...

Thanks to the 3D Touch module, standard keyboard iOS you can get the most real trackpad. With its help, it will become much easier to control the cursor, select, copy and perform other actions with the text. You can find out how the function works by watching the following video:

4. Take a selfie

Taking selfies to the next level with the new iPhone 6s. Despite the fact that this occupation is very specific, "esca" in every possible way condones it. In addition to improving the resolution of the front camera, Apple has added a kind of analogue to the flash. Of course, you will not find the LEDs on the front panel - it's all about the software implementation. Apple taught Retina display increase brightness to maximum a fraction of a second before shooting.

Here's how Apple describes the feature:

“When taking selfies, a pre-flash detects the light level, and then fires a True Tone Flash on the display to optimally complement the surrounding light. At the heart of Retina Flash is an innovative technology: a special processor increases the brightness of the screen three times compared to normal. The result is a beautiful photo with realistic colors and natural skin tones. ”

5. Record video in 4K

4K video recording - another unique one iPhone function 6s. Despite the fact that a similar solution has already been encountered by competitors, Apple's implementation of the technology is commendable. By the way, it is worth noting that the iPhone 6s Plus is better than the iPhone 6s at recording Ultra HD video due to optical stabilization... But the usual "Esca" copes with the task quite adequately. A small nuance: ultra-high quality video takes up a lot of space on the drive. A one minute video will weigh 375 MB. For 4K fans, we recommend an iPhone in the minimum configuration with 64GB of storage.

6. Try to bend

The problem of the so-called bendgate is no longer relevant. In the past, some iPhone 6 Plus owners have complained that their smartphones bent in their pockets. Apple listened to users and now the body is made from 7000 series aluminum. Try to bend!

7. Start using Siri

Siri, as strange as it may sound, is another innovation available to users of the iPhone 6s and beyond. Finally, the Cupertino voice assistant project has grown out of the beta stage. The assistant has learned many new languages, including Russian. And even though she still does not know how to sparklingly answer the tricky questions of our compatriots, in many situations she renders an invaluable service.

Thanks to the M9 coprocessor in the iPhone 6s voice assistant is constantly listening to you and ready to respond to the command "Hey Siri!" But the innovations do not end there. From now on, Siri is able to recognize the voice of the owner of the iPhone. An extra guarantee of data security will not harm anyone.

8. Reachability

And the last feature of the hit parade is the Reachability mode. It will make it easier for iPhone owners with smaller hands to use the 5.5-inch phablet. The screen slides down to comfortable limits so that the user can easily reach the top icons. To activate the mode, just double-tap the Home button.

If you were unable to activate the feature, go to Settings -> General -> Accessibility and turn it on.

Health is another new standard app in iOS 8. It lets you add your personal health record to your lock screen. In an emergency, the doctor will be able to access the necessary medical data of the user directly from iPhone screen, without unlocking.

If you were unable to activate the feature, go to Settings -> General -> Accessibility and turn it on.

1. Taking pictures without using the touch screen

Just call Siri with a long touch on the Home button and ask to turn on the camera. To take a photo, press any volume button on your smartphone or headphones.

2. Emergency reboot

In those rare cases when the iPhone freezes or needs to free up the device's RAM, an emergency reboot will help. Just hold down the Home button and the Lock button for 10 seconds.

3. Triple press the Home button

Go to the item "Accessibility" in the main settings of the iPhone. Scroll down to the Shortcut Keys tab - you will see a list of functions. Triple-tapping the Home button launches VoiceOver, color invert (useful for reading), some display settings, screen zoom, and Switch Control or AssistiveTouch.

To turn on the magnifier by triple-pressing the Home button, simply select the appropriate item in “Accessibility”.

4. Double tap on the Home button sensor

Perhaps all iPhone users know that double tap on the mechanical Home button opens the application selection window. But not everyone is aware that a double tap on the button sensor slightly "lowers" the screen, allowing the owners large smartphones easily reach the top icons.

5. Using 3D Touch

If you have an iPhone 6s or newer, using 3D Touch can make your life easier and save time. This technology will speed up movement between applications, make typing more convenient and.

6. Reassigning the volume buttons

The iPhone has two volume settings: one for calls and notifications, and one for music and apps. Turning off the “Change with buttons” toggle switch in the sound settings will fix the ringer volume in the current position and transfer control of music and applications exclusively to the side buttons.

Work with text

7. Undo the last action

Just shake your smartphone and iOS will prompt you to cancel last action, whether it's typing, pasting, or, conversely, deleting text.

8. Fast domain entry

In cases where the keyboard prompts you to quickly enter the ..com domain, hold your finger on this button. You will see a list of popular domains, where you can quickly switch to the coveted.ru.

9. Removing the microphone icon from the keyboard

The microphone icon between the space bar and the language change button is intended for voice text input. You can remove the icon by moving the "Enable dictation" slider to the inactive position in the keyboard settings.

10. Listening to the text

iOS supports Screen Aloud feature. To enable it, activate the slider in the speech settings: "Settings" → "General" → "Universal access". To have iPhone speak on the screen, swipe down with two fingers in any app.

Security

11. Create a letter password to unlock

If you don't trust 4- or 6-digit passwords and don't like Touch technology ID, you can set long.

Go to the passcode settings and select "Change passcode". The system will ask you to enter the old combination first, and then the new one. On the screen for entering a new password, click on "Passcode options" and select an acceptable option.

12. Improving the accuracy of Touch ID

To help iPhone more confidently and quickly recognize you, create multiple fingerprints of the same finger.

Disable photo export and set a password in the Notes app settings. To take a secret photo, go to create a new note and tap on the camera icon. After the photo is taken, click on "Export" and select "Lock Note".

14. Guided Access

We often give the smartphone into the wrong hands “pass the level in the game”, “read an article” or “watch a video on YouTube”. If you don't trust whoever will be using your iPhone, turn on guided access in the settings: "General" → "Accessibility" → "Guided access".

When handing over the iPhone to someone, press the Home button three times to enable guide access, and the person can only use the open application.

Posts

21. Saving traffic in "Messages"

In order not to waste traffic on heavy attachments, enable low quality mode in the message settings.

One of the non-obvious functions of "Messages" is to view the exact time of sending. Just swipe from the right side of the screen.

Alarm

23. Set up a call from Apple Music

The ability to set your favorite song to the alarm is not a trick, but basic function iPhone that many people don't know about. When creating a new alarm, click on the Sound tab. Scroll the list to the very beginning, in front of the standard ringtones, find a panel with familiar names and click on "Select Song".

24. Snooze alarm

To reschedule the alarm clock at a later time, it is not necessary to look for the corresponding button on the screen. Press any side button and iPhone will wake you up again in nine minutes.

This interval was not chosen by chance: old mechanical alarm clocks could not count exactly 600 seconds. They did not take into account the current minute and began counting already nine minutes from the next.

Safari

25. Search by word on page

Enter the desired word in the address bar. In the drop-down menu under the search engine suggestions, select "On this page."

26. Recently closed tabs

28. Opening links in the background

Other basic applications and services

29. Spotlight as a converter

Swiping down on any iPhone screen opens Spotlight. Its use significantly reduces the time it takes to search for something in a smartphone. Spotlight returns results from many applications: help you find the desired episode of the podcast, message by keyword or a person on Twitter. Also, a standard search engine can act as a converter. Just enter the request "1 usd" or "15 inches per cm".

30. Convert slow motion video to normal video

If you play with the slow motion function and accidentally shoot in slow motion whichever would look better at its natural speed, it is easy to bring the video to its original tempo without additional applications. Open the video editing section and adjust the values on the speed bar. This strip is located above the timing field where we usually cut the rollers.

31. Level

The compass in the base of the applications is practically useless in the city. But if you swipe the screen to the left, you can get a level - an indispensable device for repair and installation.

32. Apple Music Storage Optimization

Turn on the storage optimization feature in your music settings and iPhone will automatically delete songs you rarely listen to. This will happen only when the device memory runs out.

To set the minimum amount of music that will not be deleted from the iPhone, you can set the storage size.

33. Geolocation reminders

App Store task managers offer tons of features, but standard Reminders can do a lot. For example, basic application can remind you to buy milk not only at 15:00, but also when you visit the store. To enable this function, select "Remind me at my place" and find the required geolocation in the task settings.

Battery

34. Enabling power saving mode

If the iPhone has more than 20% charge left, but it is still very far to the nearest outlet, it makes sense to switch to power saving mode. To enable the mode, simply ask Siri about it or find the corresponding item in the battery settings. In these settings, you can also find a list of the most energy-consuming applications and close them in a timely manner.

35. Silent charging connection

Vibration when connecting the charger to an iPhone can be avoided by opening the Camera app before connecting the Lightning cable. The device will start charging, and your sensitive sleeping relatives will not be woken up by a sudden sound.

Part 1: design, performance, communication, new possibilities

Traditionally, one of the main devices of the year is becoming new iPhone... This year is no exception. At the September presentation of Apple, the next version of the most popular smartphone became one of the main characters, and already more than two weeks after the announcement - on September 25 - the new product went on sale. As expected, Russia was not among the countries of the first wave. However, this, as before, did not prevent the wealthiest Apple fans from acquiring an iPhone 6s with the help of resellers, but for us - to get a gadget for detailed testing (thanks).

Since all the basic information about the iPhone 6s, voiced on Apple presentations, we told you in the September report, we will not repeat ourselves and will immediately proceed to face-to-face acquaintance with the iPhone 6s.

Compared to the iPhone 6, the characteristics of the new product look really impressive: the amount of RAM has doubled, the CPU frequency has increased, and the camera has improved significantly. But, however, the battery capacity has become lower, and the mass and thickness - a little more.

Comparison of characteristics with Android competitors is not at all good for Apple devices. Here, even the iPhone 6s loses on all fronts (except perhaps for the maximum amount of flash memory). But, as you know, you cannot directly compare iOS and Android devices. So let's move on directly to testing.

Packaging and equipment

IPhone 6s packaging is traditional for Apple smartphones and practically does not differ from the packaging of the previous generation smartphone. The only thing that attracts attention is the bright picture on the screen of the depicted smartphone.

As for the package bundle, there are no surprises here either: EarPods headphones embedded in a beautiful box, leaflets, a charger (5 V 1 A), Lightning cable, stickers and a key for removing the SIM-card cradle.

Design

The appearance of the iPhone 6s has remained practically unchanged: the front surface of the novelty is generally indistinguishable from the iPhone 6, the placement of all controls and connectors is completely identical.

You can distinguish the iPhone 6s from the 6 by the letter S written on the back.

However, there is one more difference, which is easy to notice if you take smartphones one by one in your hand. iPhone 6s is about 15 grams heavier. Not much, but it really does feel.

In addition, the iPhone 6s has become a little thicker (by 0.2 mm), but this is already quite insignificant and imperceptible in real use. Apple says the iPhone 6s uses a new type of aerospace-grade aluminum and even tougher glass. But of course, neither one nor the other is visible to the eye, and we did not dare to conduct a crash test :)

In general, if you want others to see that you have a new iPhone, you will have to buy the pink version :) As we already told in the report, this new color appeared in addition to the three that existed earlier (dark gray, silver and gold).

We had a silver version for testing, so we couldn't personally assess the new color.

Security

Like the previous iPhone, the 6s has two levels of security: a Touch ID fingerprint scanner and a pin code. But both of these hardware and software elements have undergone changes. The fingerprint sensor now works faster: it cannot be said that this is some kind of radical change, but since the smartphone has to be unlocked many times during the day, even a slight improvement in this parameter will affect the overall comfort of use.

We checked it - indeed, there is a difference. But to understand how often the scanner fails and whether the sensor improvements apply to this parameter, you need to use the iPhone for a while.

The second point is the pin code. It now has six characters instead of four. Such a change is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Apple encourages all users to set up Touch ID as quickly as possible, which, in theory, should improve security. On the other hand, now the temptation to make a pin code like 111111 or 123456 is much higher, because remembering four random numbers - perhaps, and six - is already difficult (it is no coincidence that the standard of pin codes for plastic cards assumes exactly four numbers). But if you wish, you can find in the settings the ability to change the PIN code to the usual four-character one.

Performance

The iPhone 6s is powered by the 14nm Apple A9 SoC. The SoC manufacturer is Samsung... Apple traditionally does not provide almost any technical details, only claiming that the new CPU is 70% faster and the GPU is 90% faster.

According to information available from various sources (including Apple's official website), the single-chip system includes a dual-core 64-bit CPU with an architecture based on ARMv8-A, a 6-cluster PowerVR 7XT series GPU (presumably GT7600) and an Apple M9 motion coprocessor, which is now integrated into the SoC itself.

According to Apple, this allows the coprocessor to be more energy efficient and always available to Siri, making it possible to launch Siri without contact. It is enough to say “Hey Siri!” When the smartphone is just lying on the table and Siri will start. In order for this to work correctly, you need to initial setup iPhone say “Hey Siri!” several times so that the smartphone learns your voice, and then no problem arises. No matter how many times we tried to activate Siri in this way, it always worked out without problems. True, between the pronunciation of the phrase and the switching on of the device, it takes about a second or one and a half seconds.

Let's compare the performance of the iPhone 6s with the iPhone 6, and in multi-platform benchmarks add one of the most powerful Android smartphones to the comparison - the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +. If there is a dash in some fields of the tables below, it means in this mode / benchmark this smartphone not tested.

Let's start with browser benchmarks: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark, and Kraken Benchmark. Also add to our standard set Is a new browser benchmark recommended by the creators of SunSpider as a replacement. We used the Safari browser on iOS devices, and Chrome on the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +.

The results are eloquent: Apple iPhone 6s outperforms its predecessor by one and a half to two times, and the Android competitor simply leaves no chances (let's pay attention to the almost fourfold difference in Kraken Benchmark!).

Now let's see how the iPhone 6s performs in Geekbench 3, a multi-platform benchmark that measures CPU and RAM performance.

But here the results are much more contradictory. In multi-core mode, it was the Samsung smartphone that turned out to be the leader (although its gap from the iPhone 6s is not so great, albeit undoubted), and in single-core mode, both Apple smartphones are ahead, with the iPhone 6s ahead of the iPhone 6 by about one and a half times.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark, GFXBench, and the new Basemark Metal benchmark, created specifically for devices with Metal technology. In the case of the iPhone 6 and 6s, GFXBench Metal was used (a variant of the benchmark optimized for Metal devices), on the Samsung smartphone - regular version GFXBench 3.0.

Recall that Offscreen tests are displaying a 1080p picture regardless of the actual screen resolution. And Onscreen tests are displaying an image in the resolution that matches the device's screen resolution. That is, the Offscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of the abstract performance of the SoC, and the Onscreen tests - from the point of view of the comfort of the game on a specific device.

Apple iPhone 6s
Apple iPhone 6
(Apple A8)
Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +
(Exynos 7420)
GFXBenchmark Manhattan (Onscreen) 44.3 fps 29.4 fps -
GFXBenchmark Manhattan (1080p Offscreen) 40.4 fps 17.8 fps -
GFXBenchmark T-Rex (Onscreen) 39.9 fps 51.2 fps 37 fps
GFXBenchmark T-Rex (1080p Offscreen) 82.3 fps 42.7 fps 57 fps

So the leader is obvious. The iPhone 6s in Manhattan's newest and most GPU-challenged scene delivers more than enough performance to play. The absolute win for the iPhone 6 is about two times. Less demanding on the GPU, the T-Rex scene demonstrates the superiority of the iPhone 6s over the Samsung flagship, both in Onscreen mode (which is quite logical, given the much more modest screen resolution of the iPhone 6) and in Offscreen mode. There is, however, one oddity: it is not clear why the iPhone 6 showed fewer frames in Onscreen mode than in Offscreen mode, although it should be the other way around. We tested this several times, but the result was the same each time.

Next test: 3DMark. Here we are only interested in the Unlimited mode, because in other modes these devices exceed the maximum.

Here, the superiority of the iPhone 6s over the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge + is minimal, and both flagship smartphone confidently overtake the no longer flagship iPhone 6.

Finally - Basemark Metal. Since this benchmark is made specifically for Apple devices, Samsung smartphone not in the table.

And here the results turned out to be even more winning for the iPhone 6s. During the display of the test scene, there was a fps counter in the upper left corner. In the case of the iPhone 6, it showed 11-12 fps, in the case of the iPhone 6s - 30-35 fps. Considering that even iPad Air 2 - the most powerful on this moment Apple tablet(before the release of iPad Pro) - it was 9-10 fps, we can say that the iPhone 6s is the most productive in three-dimensional graphics Apple device. Below are screenshots of the Basemark Metal scene from the iPhone 6 (top) and iPhone 6s (bottom).

Overall, Apple's promise of growth iPhone performance 6s compared to the iPhone 6 turned out to be true. And often even more modest than the real result. The Apple A9 sets new standards for mobile 3D performance and seems to outperform not only Apple devices, but also Android competitors, despite the fact that their specifications look more attractive.

Work in Wi-Fi and LTE networks

The smartphone will work on almost all LTE networks. In this version, Apple has implemented the widest possible support for LTE bands - 23 bands. That is, you can safely buy it in another country (provided that it is not locked to a specific operator) and at the same time be sure that with us it will be fully functional in terms of communication capabilities. Likewise, with trips to another country. However, already with the iPhone 6, things were doing very well.

More importantly, the iPhone 6s is the first Apple smartphone to support LTE Advanced (Cat.6). This standard allows you to download data at speeds up to 300 Mbit / s, while in conventional LTE (Cat.4) this parameter is limited to 150 Mbit / s. Apple claims that internet speeds over LTE and Wi-Fi have doubled.

In Russia, LTE Advanced (LTE +) networks have appeared relatively recently: first of all, this is Moscow, and then not everywhere, and then only at Beeline and Megafon (MTS is in the process of network deployment).

As for Wi-Fi, Apple is also promising a two-fold increase in speed. The novelty supports all modern Wi-Fi standards, including 802.11ac 5 GHz, but we could not notice and prove the improvement in the quality of the Internet connection compared to the iPhone 6 (which also supports the same standards).

The iPhone 6s implements an interesting technology that allows you to "support" the Internet connection using networks with weak Wi-Fi cellular communication... It is not entirely clear why use weak Wi-Fi at all, if there is a faster 3G / LTE, and in addition, this can lead to uncontrolled traffic waste, since the smartphone itself determines whether Wi-Fi is weak, and at any time it can start using LTE. Let's imagine a situation when you are trying to watch a video over Wi-Fi in a cafe, but this Wi-Fi is actually weak and does not play video, so the smartphone starts using an LTE connection, but you don’t know about it - the Wi-Fi icon is on ! As a result, you watch the video, thinking that it is on Wi-Fi, but in fact, you are using up cellular traffic. By default, this feature is enabled (see the “Help with Wi-Fi” item in the screenshot below), so we recommend that you disable it to avoid unforeseen expenses.

Note that the iPhone 6s, like its predecessor, supports "hot" insertion and replacement of the SIM-card (without rebooting).

New features and software

Despite the fact that the operating system iOS 9 is available on the previous generation of Apple smartphones, a number of software capabilities only available on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Chief among them is, of course, 3D Touch, a new way to interact with the touchscreen.

What are we talking about? Let's remember the technology Force touch in the new MacBook Pro 13 ″ and MacBook 12 ″, as well as in smart watch Apple Watch. When pressed, the device responds not only to the duration of the touch (as it was previously on the iPhone and iPad), but also to the pressure. Pressing harder (deeper) produces a different action than a weaker one. In the case of the iPhone 6s, the manufacturer decided to call it 3D Touch.

If we forcefully click on some application icons, a menu will open right on the main screen next to this icon. The content of the menu depends on specific application... The screenshots below are a few examples.

3D Touch works not only "outside" but also "inside" applications. For example, in mail client you can use it to preview the letter (the window with the contents of the letter seems to be on top of the rest), and if at the moment when the preview opens, make a swiping movement up without releasing your finger, then we will see the answer options. The same is true for SMS.

Another curious use of 3D Touch is to transform a keyboard into a trackpad. We open any application where you can call the keyboard, do a deep press anywhere on the keyboard - and the letters / numbers on the buttons disappear, and a cursor appears at the entry point, which can be moved. In theory, this can be quite handy when working with mail.

However, we do not undertake to assert unequivocally that 3D Touch greatly facilitates the use of a smartphone. For example, if you want to take a selfie using 3D Touch, then you first need to do this deep press on the camera icon, and then select “Selfie” in the menu that opens, and after that press the capture button. There are three actions in total. But the same can be done by simply clicking on the camera icon, clicking to switch to front camera and then press the shutter release. It turns out also three actions! And almost any scenario for using 3D Touch can be replaced with a similar traditional one, which is no more complicated and no longer. The only place where we found the real benefits of 3D Touch is in Maps. Press deeply on any object on the map - and we see information about this object (without 3D Touch, this information could be seen after two actions: first - clicking on the object, then - on the arrow meaning "More").

Another hardware and software innovation borrowed from Apple Watch- Feedback from the Taptic Engine. You can feel it precisely when using 3D Touch, that is, it notifies you that the smartphone has recognized a deep press. But while it seems that Apple Watch this function is still much more needed.

The last innovation, which we will tell you about in this section, is "live wallpaper". These are something like gifs that are activated by a long press, that is, a cross between dynamic and static wallpapers. It is useless, but it looks beautiful and at first pleases.

Interestingly, you can make such wallpapers yourself - using the iPhone 6s camera. But we will talk about this in the second part of the article. There is also waiting for you detailed testing iPhone 6s screen and camera, and battery life measurements.
