But all these hopes were in vain. Apple really focused on the topic of education, but presented its developments in this area in all areas - from hardware and software parts to services and complex solutions.

Let's analyze the main thing in detail, sifting out marketing and what was previously known. And let's start our story, of course, with the new iPad.

iPad

In fact, the cheaper iPad is not some special innovation. Recall: exactly a year ago, in the spring of 2017, Apple released the iPad, which was sold in Russian retail for about 25 thousand rubles (with a minimum memory capacity of 32 GB). The new iPad will cost exactly the same (for a similar version), and in general, its concept is similar: these are the components of the previous generation, the camera is worse, random access memory smaller ... But there is one important difference: the new iPad supports the Apple Pencil stylus.

Let's look at the main characteristics of the new product and compare them with other Apple tablets of a similar size.

Of course, it’s hard to say for sure before live testing, but we have an assumption that the case and screen remain the same as the 2017 iPad. Actually, only the SoC and the battery have been replaced (this can be seen from the slightly changed capacity), and stylus support has been added at the firmware level.

Previously, the absence of a stylus was a fundamental difference between the Pro versions, but when the iPad Pro 10.5 appeared on sale, which replaced the iPad Pro 9.7, the gap between the two lines (inexpensive iPad and expensive iPad Pro) widened. This allowed Apple to change tactics and still add stylus support to the budget model. All the same, most of the other characteristics of the iPad Pro 10.5 are better - even though it was released last year. Specifically, the new iPad doesn't support a keyboard. smart keyboard- it does not have the required connector, like its predecessor.

One way or another, in terms of the totality of characteristics and at a price of 25 thousand rubles (and for schools and students - 24 thousand), this is a very attractive offer. And by the way, it can significantly expand the audience of Apple Pencil users, which is also a plus for the manufacturer.

The novelty is not yet available for order in the Russian online store (although there is a corresponding page), but it is already on sale in the USA, and given that the last iPad appeared in Russia without too much delay, we can expect that the new iPad will be available in April.

iWork update

The assumption that Apple has decided to take serious steps towards popularizing its Pencil stylus is confirmed by the changes announced at the presentation in office applications for iPad, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. By updating all parts of the iWork suite to version 4.0, Apple added stylus support to them. It is significant that macOS versions were also updated at the same time - up to 7.0.

So what can you do now? The main thing is that you can draw directly inside these applications, as well as add handwritten notes, which will then be available in the corresponding application for macOS.

Updates are already available for download. We could not test the innovations in detail, but we made the first acquaintance. Indeed, now if you press the stylus on any place in the document and hold it a little, an empty block will appear inside the text where you can draw. The block size is changeable, all standard tools are available for drawing.

As for commenting, this feature is still in beta, and, by the way, we did not immediately manage to launch it with a stylus. However, you can use the menu in the upper right corner and enable smart annotation there (this is the name of this feature).

Next, we draw directly on top of the text. In general, not to say that this is something revolutionary, competitors have similar things, but I'm glad that they are now available in iWork for iPad. And, which is especially nice, if you open the saved file on a MacBook or iMac, we will see exactly the same location of all the notes there. Compare: first - a screenshot from the iPad, then - from the MacBook.

As you can see, all the notes are preserved in the smallest detail.

One more new opportunity, now just about Pages - creating interactive EPUB books. Here, however, it is quite difficult to say something without deep immersion, but I would like to remind you that previous solution Apple in this area - free app iBooks Author for macOS - has not received any noticeable distribution (at least in our country), although the idea was good.

Frankly, it's hard to imagine that someone would seriously use Pages to create interactive books, but, as they say, so be it. Moreover, it can be useful just for educational purposes. And here we come to the third group of announcements of the last presentation.

Education software

So, Apple introduced a whole complex software solutions, aimed at use in schools and designed to facilitate the "digital" interaction between teachers and students, as well as allowing third-party developers to create their own applications for this area.

True, unlike iWork updates, they are not yet available and will appear, apparently, only in the summer (after WWDC). Plus, this is a very specific area, and here it’s definitely nowhere without diving into the material, but we still list the announced new items and try to briefly comment on them, based on the available information.

First of all, this is the "Creativity for Everyone" program. It includes a range of free learning resources, as well as study guides, with which "educators can easily incorporate elements of art, music, photography, and videography into any topic, lesson, or activity." The program contains manuals for teachers and students, lesson plans, ideas and examples, using which teachers "can bring an element of creativity and interaction in such disciplines as mother tongue, mathematics, physics and history."

Sounds tempting, but let's see how it will function. So far, the Apple Teacher resource, through which access to the program is provided, is not available in our country.

Another novelty is the Tasks app (again, for both iOS and macOS). It is designed to help teachers develop and issue assignments to students, monitor their implementation and use the capabilities of other applications in the educational process. Apparently it's something like electronic journal and environments for joint work simultaneously. Moreover, Apple provides access to the "Assignments" functionality to third-party developers through the ClassKit API.

And the third innovation. The Classroom app, previously available on iPad, is now available on Mac. It is needed for remote control student tablets.

Finally, for educational institutions, the administrative Apple School Manager will be intended. With it, you can control Apple devices and accounts Apple records student ID. But we, unfortunately, will definitely not be able to test this, so we will refrain from commenting.

Apple's spring presentation left a mixed feeling. If we remove beautiful words and ideas aimed at the future, and highlight only what is potentially interesting here and now for everyone Apple users, then the bottom line will be a boring budget iPad update and less boring, but still not really major update office applications.

Of course, we'll be testing the iPad as soon as we can, and maybe we'll talk more about iWork's software innovations at the same time. And yet, in general, the picture here is very predictable. And it is unlikely that such, in general, not the most significant announcements could become a topic for a presentation - remember that a year ago Apple released a budget iPad without any presentations at all, although it just became a new word in the Apple tablet line (at least positioning and idea).

Then what is all this for? Obviously, it is for the sake of the educational component. And here, on the one hand, the prospects that open up are very intriguing - if Apple seriously takes up this area, there may be cardinal shifts towards more active and productive use digital technologies. But on the other hand, living in Russia, we understand that the introduction of such innovations here will be very difficult - for a number of reasons, and this is definitely not a matter of the near future. But, nevertheless, I am glad that the largest company in the world has paid close attention to this difficult, but such an important area. Who knows, maybe this step will eventually turn out to be more important for humanity and the IT industry than the release of the next device, even if it is more interesting in terms of characteristics than the new iPad.

The coming year will be rich in events and completely new products in the Apple product line.

HomePod - early 2018

In mid-November, it became known that the release of a new Apple gadget, which, for sure, many buyers would be ready to consider as a New Year's gift, was postponed to the beginning of next year. It's about about the HomePod music smart speaker.

It's time to radically refresh the line of "bedside" devices, especially in terms of design.

Journalists suggest that the company's new tablets will receive all features of iPhone X- thin bezels, Face ID technology, an indistinct cutout for sensors on top. Accordingly, the usual Touch ID devices will lose. As well as 3.5mm audio outputs.

It is possible that new iPad models will be protected from water and dust.
