How to highlight text using the keyboard. The most useful Windows keyboard shortcuts (hot keys) On the keyboard, select all

It is often necessary to select all text in a browser window, text editor or other application: for example, to copy it into a text document or paste it into an email and send it to someone, or vice versa, to delete it from a file and start writing all over again. In this article, we will talk about the main ways to select text that work in almost all applications, whether it is a word processor, browser, or messaging program.

Keyboard selection

Perhaps the easiest way to select all text at once is to use a special keyboard shortcut that works in any program. Just press the Latin [A] (aka Russian [F]) on the keyboard at the same time. By the way, the text selected in this way can be very easily copied without even taking your hands off the keyboard - just press and [C] at the same time. And if you want to delete the selected text from the file, the key will help you.

Mouse Selection

If the passage is small, you can also select it with the mouse - just place the cursor at the beginning of the text, press the left mouse button and, holding it, scroll the page to the end with the wheel. However, this is not suitable for long multi-page texts - it will take a very long time to flip through. In this case, it is easier and faster to select all the text with the keyboard. By the way, in some applications, in particular, in browsers, Windows Notepad, Skype and some other instant messengers, there is another way to select all text with the mouse - press the right button and find the "Select All" item in the menu that appears. In the same way, you can then copy the selected text - right-click on it and select the "Copy" command.

Selection via menu

In most programs, one way or another designed to work with text, the selection option is also in the "Edit" menu. Open it and find the "Select All" item. By the way, often next to the command in the menu they also write a key combination that can be used to quickly execute it. So if you suddenly forgot which keys to use to select all the text, open the "Edit" menu and pay attention - there will probably be a hint there.

The Internet is a huge world where everyone will find something valuable for themselves. Some people like to watch videos on, others prefer to chat on thematic forums, and still others use the World Wide Web as an encyclopedia. Indeed, here you can find so much valuable information that you won’t be able to read in a lifetime. We save some important files in a text document. Fortunately, browsers allow you to select both entire pages and individual fragments, words or even letters. But not all PC users know how to do it. But don't worry, we'll help you!

Selection: various ways

  • Popular browsers (, Google Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer) do not differ at all in this regard. If you need to copy some fragment in the text on the site, then simply move the mouse arrow to the initial word and select the desired text. On most sites, such a background around the text changes its color, although on some, no change is noticeable at all - it depends on the preferences of the owners of Internet resources. By the way, text cannot be copied on some sites - this is a kind of protection against theft of articles, which is very easy to bypass (the text can be found through the code using the CTRL + U key combination and further search).
  • If you want to select all the text on the page at once, then you don’t even need a mouse for this. Just press the key combination CTRL + A (meaning the Latin letter A). The same can be done by selecting "Edit" - "Select All" in the browser menu. But keep in mind one important point - absolutely everything will be selected, including various links and even pictures. However, you can always deselect by holding down the Shift key and selecting the desired piece of text. All of this fully applies to Microsoft Office Word documents.
  • If you are not satisfied with the selection of everything and everything on the page of the site or document, then we recommend that you do the following. Select the text, click on the left mouse button next to the first word of the article or paragraph. Then hold down the Shift key and hold. Now find the last word in a paragraph or article, press the left mouse button next to it and only now can you release Shift. Thus, you have selected the fragment you need. You can find more details about this method in the screenshot below:

As part of this note, I will tell you how to select text using the keyboard using different methods.

The mouse is a convenient and easy-to-use tool. However, almost everyone has many situations where it would be much easier to use the keyboard. For example, select a few characters or a large piece of text, the document uses a small font, the need to duplicate a fragment, and so on. For the web, this can generally cause a lot of problems, especially if the site design is done in such a way that a lot of technical information or individual elements (blocks, modules, etc.) are highlighted along with the text.

How to highlight text using the keyboard - options

Consider one of the well-known options for how to select text using the keyboard:

1. Using a key combination Ctrl+A you can select all the text anywhere, in a document, a web page, and so on. It is especially convenient when you need to arrange small documents into one large one.

2. Using a key Shift. Let me tell you how to use it first. Place the cursor at the beginning of the text, then hold down the key Shift and press right arrow. You will see that the text is selected one character at a time and added to the already selected fragment. Same key Shift can be used in conjunction with left arrow(select or deselect text on the left side of the cursor), up and down arrows(this is line-by-line selection), also keys PageUp and PageDown(for quick selection of text in large chunks) and keys Home and end(at the beginning and end of a piece of text; usually a line or paragraph).

Note: I advise you to immediately try these combinations to better understand how it looks.

Also, the advantage of this key is that after you have selected the text, it is not necessary to continue to hold it. For example, you selected one line and realized that you need to select a few more, to do this, just hold down Shift again and press the down key.

Note: It is worth noting that in the web and regular documents, this mode differs in that in sites it is usually impossible to set the cursor, so in order to use this trick, you must first select at least a small fragment of text with the mouse.

3. Use of combinations with Shift+Ctrl. This is a slightly more complex combination and only applies to arrows left and right(allows you to select not one character at a time, but words at once), as well as keys Home and end(to the beginning and end of all text from the cursor).

Note: By the way, if you use the Ctrl arrow key without Shift, it will allow you to quickly move the cursor from word to word.

Note: Also, all the listed keys can be used to move the cursor.

I would also like to make a couple of points. Firstly, in some programs, some of the combinations can be used by the program itself, so instead of the selected text, for example, some window may open, so you should double-check them before editing the text. Secondly, at first, using these combinations may seem inconvenient, but after a while you will notice that it is easy and saves time.

Dragging the mouse to highlight text in Microsoft Word requires a jeweler's precision. I prefer using the Ctrl, Shift, and arrow keys to select text, which is much faster than using the mouse.
