Not all stores had enough Gear VR, somewhere they ended very quickly, supplies are constantly coming, and virtual reality glasses will reach all buyers, this will happen back in March. The problem with the number of Gear VR turned out to be that no one expected such a frenzied demand, especially during the crisis. Normally pre-order conversion rates are lower, this year it was very high. It is impossible to say that prices were lower, that something has changed with salaries in Russia. After reading in several sources that ZTE supplied prohibited equipment, I tried to find a list of it or a mention of what it was. To my surprise, an interesting detail was found in the official documents, there was no actual delivery, according to the US Department of Commerce, ZTE “planned” such deliveries through front companies, but did not manage to carry them out. That is, the violation itself did not even happen, but, nevertheless, the US government decided to impose sanctions on ZTE. Weird? How, especially if you do not try to remember what preceded this US attack on China in the trade war. This is one of the acts of aggression that is not directly related to Iran, and the latter is used solely as a pretext.

In China, they are actively helping local manufacturers and companies, in particular, the state has invested in Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE and other manufacturers over the years to put them on their feet. One of the few telecommunications companies in China that continues to receive long and cheap government loans is ZTE. The local preferences of this company are such that competitors only sigh sadly and try to catch up with hard work. The company sells infrastructure equipment to 500 operators in 160 countries, is firmly among the top three suppliers, produces own smartphones and ranks fifth in this market, continues to increase its presence in this segment. For example, in 2015, ZTE's ambitions were such that the company began to capture the US smartphone market, in a year it doubled sales and reached 20 million units. What brought ZTE to fourth place in the US, it caused Huawei anguish, as the company is not doing so well in this market.

A successful company, which has its subsidiaries around the world, is supported by the government. Why has it become a target for the US? The answer lies in the fact that it was ZTE that was chosen as the executor of the national program for the development of microelectronics. The second largest economy in the world consumes half of all electronic components that are created on our planet. This is a factory for assembling various electronics, the world's largest factory. But if you look at the list of major suppliers, component makers, from memory to processors, you won't find Chinese companies in the top ten. China acts as an assembly shop, but not as a manufacturer and creator of technology. In the summer of 2015, the Chinese government and Xi Jinping adopted a program to develop their own enterprises for the production and development of microelectronics in order to overcome dependence on American companies. Within ten years, one trillion yuan was planned to be spent on this program, which at that rate was about 160 billion dollars. Several companies were chosen to search for investment-attractive areas, with ZTE as the key player.

Starting in September 2015, ZTE launched a program to find and buy design studios that can work with microelectronics. The task was set simply - to buy everything that is of the slightest interest and will allow you to get closer to creating your own technologies, to develop individual components. A number of deals in Europe and the United States fell through due to the opposition of the states, which actually banned the sale under various pretexts. Small companies did not have any secret technologies, except for the ability to create mass products using standard tools. But someone powerful saw this as a threat to US dominance in the electronics market and blocked such deals. The reaction was mild and did not make ZTE wary, as some deals went through and the impression of a market situation was created.

What happened in March? ZTE tried to gain access to Qualcomm technologies, negotiations were underway to license IP, development technologies mobile processors. All this happened against the backdrop of an internal crisis at Qualcomm, the company urgently needed money, it was even about dividing the company into two parts. Chinese ZTE could offer money that would solve all issues. But for some reason the deal did not take place, unfortunately, it is not possible to find out the details of this incident, it was involved from two sides at most a dozen people.

But literally immediately the situation with Iran takes place, simultaneously with a public statement, American companies begin to receive notifications from the Ministry of Commerce, which prohibit work with ZTE, the exchange of information and the supply of not only technologies, but also finished products. The imposition of sanctions occurs quickly, if not instantly.

It suddenly turns out that the Taiwanese MediaTek is controlled by the United States and also refuses to ship chipsets to ZTE address despite the appearance of independence. In Qualcomm, exactly the same situation, which is aggravated by the new rules, employees are warned that any communication with ZTE representatives will be investigated. To understand the implications of this move, one must remember that ZTE buys $450 million worth of components and electronics from US companies every quarter (data from Bloomberg Supply Chain). Sanctions imposed by the US government, in theory, hit the US companies that supply these components, they may lose the market. In parallel, other Chinese manufacturers receive strange letters, in which suppliers floridly explain that any increase in orders will be examined for compliance with needs! The impossibility of resale to companies that are under sanctions is mentioned. Actually, we are talking that the entire market is being warned not to sell anything to ZTE.

In the US, they are well aware that sanctions will cause trouble for ZTE, possibly negatively affecting market share, but they will not be able to stifle the company. Moreover, she will find an opportunity to buy everything the same through second hands, it will be impossible to control the entire market. But the cost of components for ZTE will rise, as will their availability. At the moment, the warehouses have components for 1.5-2 months of plant operation, and this applies to both infrastructure equipment and phones. If the issue with the US government is not resolved within this period, serious problems will begin and the loss of market share in the world will begin.

In the US, they do not refuse to communicate with ZTE at all, moreover, they are actively negotiating. That allows you to understand what tasks this country sees in this war. China, through ZTE and pressure on this company, they want to force them to abandon their microelectronics development program, to remain an assembly shop for the whole world. How likely is China to give in to this pressure?

This seems to me unlikely. Publicly, ZTE may admit sins, pay fines, but the state program for the development of electronics, on the contrary, will receive an extra push, additional money will go into it. This is a matter of national security and the need to ensure it. There are no problems with funds in China, the question is where to invest them in order to level the gap that has formed between the US and other countries in electronics.
