Attention! This article is out of date. At the moment, there is only one way to connect to Bitrix24 under Linux - the unofficial Brick client. Attempts to revive the Windows desktop client under Wine have so far been unsuccessful.

It just so happened that we have been using linux products for more than 4 years (mainly Ubuntu distributions) and are constantly faced with the problems of lack of support for this OS from various software developers.

For the family of operating systems debian, as well as for other linux distributions, there is a whole layer of its own software, but there are times when there is simply no alternative to a Windows application. One of such examples is the popular Bitrix24 CRM system. The developers of this system have taken care of the client for Windows and Mac OS operating systems, but the linux family has been neglected so far. The 1C-Bitrix company can be understood, since it is not enough to create an application, it still needs to be modernized and provided technical support for it.

When you have an application for several operating systems in your asset, this entails a significant expansion of the staff, which can inevitably affect the cost of the product for the end user. Here you have to choose the middle ground. Either support all systems, but increase the cost of the product greatly, or limit ourselves to only the main operating systems, but provide affordable prices.
Our task was to install the Bitrix24 desktop client for Windows on Ubuntu 14.04 and try to synchronize files located in Bitrix24.Disk.

What we have:

  • computer with installed OS 14.04.2 LTS (64x)
  • Bitrix24 desktop client (version 3.3.5.28) for Windows OS
  • a strong desire to keep up with Windows in terms of the usability of the Bitrix24 service

How to solve the problem

The first thing to do is to install the Wine software on Ubuntu, which allows you to implement the Windows API on operating systems of the linux family (essentially a Windows emulator).

The Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) repository contains several versions of Wine.
When running the command:

    $ sudo apt-get install wine

a stable release of Wine 1.6.2 is installed, but looking ahead, we will immediately warn you about any problems that have arisen in the work of the Bitrix24 application on this Wine release.

The desktop application was installed in normal mode and after launching from the icon on the desktop, it successfully started.

Next, the problems started. The system monitor began to show the CPU load of 20% from the side of the Bitrix24 application, which is clearly not the norm, since the application was in passive mode and there was no communication, and a computer based on Intel i7 was used for tests. For such a processor, 20% is clearly too much.

At first I thought it was frozen, but then, after restarting the computer and other checks, I saw exactly the same picture. As soon as the Bitrix24 desktop application was launched, one processor core was "tightly loaded".

The solution to this problem was found quickly enough. Obviously, all the problems were in the current version of Wine1.6, so it was decided to install an unstable, but regularly updated version of Wine1.7. Since, for both versions, there is one repository, you only need to enter one command. We open the terminal (CRTL + T) and begin to conjure.

    $ sudo apt-get install wine1.7

After installing the new version of Wine, the Bitrix24 desktop application started normally, but a new problem appeared. The fact is that the Canonical team, when developing Ubuntu 14.04, abandoned the com.canonical.Unity.Panel scheme and now, to get into the dashboard, you need to use other algorithms. In version Wine1.6, a new mechanism for displaying application shortcuts in the tray was implemented, but in version Wine1.7, the developers of this product clearly did not take into account something and when starting a Bitrix24 application, there was a problem with entering it. The application hangs in memory, works, but you cannot open it without a shortcut in the tray, i.e. it will not be possible to work fully. There is only one solution to this problem. The moment you receive a message from the system or another user, you can, by clicking on the notification, call the application itself. I can't call it a complete solution for users. We decided to look for the ability to display the Bitrix24 program shortcut in the tray.

The solution was found. There were some enthusiasts who patched Unity for displaying third-party indicators in the tray. Installation of this solution can be done in two ways:

  • installation via repository
  • direct installation of downloaded packages

Installation via repository.

    $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gurqn / systray-trusty -y && sudo apt-get upd ate && sudo apt-get upgrade

This method, at the time of this writing, is already outdated, tk. packages contained in the repository have earlier versions (7.2.4) than those installed on the system (7.2.5 subject to regular updates). Accordingly, nothing in the system will be updated and you will not get any result.

Installing updates from packages

After this step, you can either simply log out of your account, or restart your computer. After logging into your account again, you launch the Bitrix24 desktop application and see how it starts to work normally.

As you can see, the tray icon is working, the application is running normally, files are synchronized when adding or editing on the local computer.

    • Due to the unstable operation of the Bitrix24 desktop application version 3.4.31.3, it is not possible to use the screen sharing functionality.
    • The application starts only when the Windows XP operating mode is emulated in Wine;
    • It is necessary to refuse updates to Unity or configure the prohibition of updates for this component.

Since the release of the article, a solution has been found that allows you to keep up with Unity updates. The solution to this problem is the program This program implements the ability to display icons for applications that cannot be placed in the Unity system tray. First of all, this concerns programs that run under Wine.

Let's figure out what this indicator can do. By default, while there are no running programs (using the tray) in the computer memory, this indicator does not appear in the tray. As soon as the first program is launched, it immediately appears in the tray.

This indicator has two modes of operation. The first one shows the shortcuts of running programs according to the principle used in systems of the Windows family. When you click on the indicator, a hidden area pops up with running program shortcuts.

The second mode of the program is already much more interesting. When you click on the mouse wheel (middle button) on the indicator, the icons of running programs appear in the tray area, but this does not end there. If you keep the mouse pointer on the indicator and start spinning the mouse wheel, you can change the position of the shortcuts of running programs along the X axis. If you wish, you can move the shortcuts to the left or to the right. I want to warn you right away against the fact that you cannot slide the shortcuts of running programs onto active indicators, because the ability to move them may be disabled and you will have to edit the indicator settings in the dconf-editor. In this editor, you can change the position of the indicator along the X and Y axes. There is also the possibility of a color gamut.

Now about installing this indicator on your computer.
