We got a black iPhone for review. Despite the external resemblance to the iPhone 6s, it feels completely different in the hand. In the new smartphone, plastic inserts for antennas have moved to the top and bottom of the back cover. In black, the stripes are almost indistinguishable. In other colors they are more noticeable, but do not spoil at all appearance. Externally, the aluminum coating remains unchanged, but the body is smoother to the touch than in the iPhone 6s.

It is pleasant to hold the smartphone in your hand, despite the smooth surface, it does not slip in your hand.

The back cover quickly becomes covered with fingerprints, but it is very easy to clean. The camera lens, as before, sticks out a little, which increases the likelihood of damage. The inscriptions on the back cover become noticeable only when you look at the phone from a certain angle. Thanks to the special paint, in most cases they remain invisible to the eye, which has a positive effect on the appearance of the gadget. In other colors, the inscriptions are always clearly visible.

The volume rocker is in the same place, but visually it seems that it does not stick out so much anymore. The power key has remained unchanged in terms of appearance, but it is much easier to press.

The main difference between the new iPhone lies in its lower end. Now there is no 3.5 mm minijack in the design, the headset is connected to the Lightning connector. Below is a mesh for a multimedia speaker, and a microphone is hidden under the second one. If you look at the front panel, it will be very difficult to distinguish it from the iPhone 6s.

The only difference when the display is off is the new Home key.

Another feature of the new iPhone is that it now has full protection against moisture and dust according to the IP67 standard. Now the smartphone can be submerged to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. Testing suggests that the device can withstand diving to great depths, but it's not worth the risk.

Display

Before us is the same 4.7-inch retina screen HD built with IPS technology. The resolution is not high by modern standards - 1334 × 750 pixels (326 ppi), but on the other hand, this leads to less energy consumption, and therefore better autonomy. The pixel grid is not visible, it is a pleasure to use such a display.

Wide viewing angle

The maximum brightness margin is very large - 625 cd / m², which is 25% higher than that of the iPhone 6s. This ensures comfortable use even in bright sunshine. The colors on the new smartphone look brighter and richer. The iPhone 7+ version has a slightly better screen, but not everyone will like the 5.5-inch diagonal. It has Full HD resolution and a pixel density of 401 ppi.

In the new iPhone, important updates have touched the camera. Now two modules are used according to the now fashionable tradition. One sensor is wide-angle and the other is telephoto. Directly during shooting, you can choose which camera to use on this moment to get great pictures. You can also change cameras in video mode. Now 4K is shot at 60 fps. But in fact, there is no such setting in the parameters yet, only 30 fps. Most likely, the manufacturer is going to introduce it in future updates.

As you'd expect, the camera didn't make much of a breakthrough, but it didn't get worse either. At the time of the release of the smartphone, there were small problems with software processing, but they were fixed in further system updates.

In good daylight, a beautiful and detailed image is obtained. At the slightest decrease in illumination, noise reduction becomes active, although the light sensitivity parameters are low, and shutter speeds are quite short.

A camera with a telephoto lens is no different in design, but the system works with it a little differently. In general, the image quality is at the highest level, but at night there is a lot of noise. The main 12-megapixel camera is equipped with an optical stabilization system, six lenses and an aperture of f / 1.8. The second has the same resolution and lenses, but f / 2.8 aperture. When switching between lenses, a 2x optical zoom is provided. If this is not enough for you to get a good picture, then you can use the 10x digital zoom.
The front camera takes 7-megapixel pictures and supports HDR mode. The angle is not very wide, but its capabilities are enough to get high-quality selfies in good light conditions.

The smartphone heats up with active use in the upper right area on the back of the device. The maximum heating level, according to our measurements, was 41 degrees, which does not create any discomfort during the game and other usage scenarios.

Specifications

The iPhone 7 is powered by the new A10 Fusion processor with a quad-core architecture. Each core operates at a frequency of 2.34 GHz, due to which excellent performance is achieved when performing any tasks. The smartphone occupies the first position in the top of modern benchmarks, which is due to powerful stuffing and excellent system optimization. The standard version has 2 GB random access memory, and in the iPhone 7 Plus - 3 GB. When working with the shell and applications, the extra gigabyte is almost not noticed. iPhone 7 and iPhone 7plus a detailed review would not be complete without looking at the capabilities of the Home key. In the new model, she became touch and learned to recognize the force of pressing. For the key to work on it, you need to press a little. To do this, the design includes the Taptic Engine technology, which, with the help of vibration, forms the feeling that the key is being pressed. In the settings, you can set multiple fingerprints to restrict access to the device. The fingerprint scanner began to work a little faster. Apple, as usual, has revealed the absolute minimum of information about the components of the new iPhone. Independent studies will shed light on the details over time, but in such a short period of time that has passed since the appearance of the devices on sale, many questions have not yet been answered.

The key innovation of the iPhone 7 is a system-on-a-chip called the Apple A10 Fusion. Ever since the iPhone first used an Apple-designed SoC (A4), the company hasn't felt the need to equip its chips with more than two ARM cores. The goal of the creators of the A-series SoC was and remains the most efficient extraction of parallelism from a single instruction stream. In all iPhone generations, which have been replaced over the years, this approach has proven to be effective, allowing Apple processors to compete at least equally with mobile SoCs with four or more cores (both ARM-licensed designs and based on original IPs) in such resource-intensive and typical for smartphone tasks like web surfing and 3D games.

However, if from the point of view of speed, four-eight-core CPUs are not the only and, the conclusion suggests itself, not the most successful solution, the top-class SoCs competing with Apple chips have one advantage that the engineers of the Californian company have not been in a hurry to adopt for the time being. Back in 2011, ARM proposed the Big.LITTLE architecture, which implies the placement of two clusters of cores on a chip - high-performance and energy-efficient. The load is somehow distributed in accordance with the purpose of the clusters, which ultimately allows you to increase performance per watt of power consumed by the SoC.

In a narrower sense, the term Big.LITTLE refers to select combinations of cores developed by ARM, but this principle is used with equal success in products such as the Samsung Exynos 8 Octa 8890 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, equipped with original design cores. With the release of the Apple A10 Fusion, the Cupertino-based company is also on the beaten track.

Here are a few facts that are currently known about the heterogeneous architecture of the Apple A10 Fusion. SoC includes two dual-core clusters and a hardware controller that performs task migration between the latter. The word "migration" with a high probability means that high-performance and energy-efficient clusters never work at the same time, and at the moment one of the clusters goes down, it transfers data to the second through a shared L2 cache.

The available image from ChipWorks allowed us to localize the high-performance cluster of ARM cores, covering an area of ​​16 mm 2 - compared to 13 mm 2 in the Apple A9. The increase in area against the background of a general increase in the density of the microcircuit (which will be discussed below) can be interpreted in such a way that two smaller cores are located in one of the other possible positions, and the main cluster has been increased. However, another hypothesis seems to be more consistent: an energy-efficient and high-performance cluster are integrated with each other. The last way organization may have something to do with such characteristics of the chip as the efficient use of the transistor budget and the way the load is migrated between clusters. And, by the way, the word Fusion in the name of the SoC may indicate just that.

It remains an open question whether there are any differences in the core ARM core pipeline compared to the Twister architecture used in the A9. Judging by the performance claims (and assuming two A10 Fusion clusters really aren't running at the same time), the answer to that question is yes. The high-performance A10 Fusion cluster runs at a 27% higher frequency than the Apple A9 CPU (2.34 vs. 1.85GHz), but should be 40% faster.

O GPU as part of the A10 Fusion, even less is known. Apple says it's a six-core GPU. Thus, if the developer continues to license IP from Imagination Technologies, we are dealing either with an overclocked PowerVR GT7600 variant that was used in the Apple A9, or with a representative new series PowerVR Series7XT, introduced by Imagination earlier this year. The declared performance of the GPU exceeds that of the Apple A9 by 50%.

The Apple A10 Fusion is manufactured at TSMC's facilities using 16 nm FinFET technology and has an area of ​​125 mm 2, which is 20.5 mm 2 more than the area of ​​the A9 - also manufactured by TSMC. Based on an independent estimate of the number of transistors in both SoCs (more than 2 billion and 3.3 billion, respectively), then the A10 Fusion achieved a significantly higher component density compared to Apple's first experience with the 16 nm FinFET process technology.

So far, there is no evidence that Apple has attracted a second contractor for the production of SoC - Samsung - in parallel with TSMC, as happened with the Apple A9. Apparently, TSMC's exclusive position brought new way chip packages - InFO-WLP (Integrated Fan-Out Wafer-Level Packaging). The essence of the technology is that the chip is mounted directly on printed circuit board without organic substrate. To do this, areas on the crystal area are reserved, occupied not by transistor logic, but only by metal conductors, which are terminated by solder balls on the surface. The allocated area allows you to make the balls large enough for soldering to the board. On the contrary, a typical packaging method involves two layers of beads: small beads connecting the chip to the organic base, and large beads on the bottom surface of the substrate.

The use of InFO-WLP provides the chip with several advantages: the package height is reduced, cooling is improved, and finally, shorter conductors help increase clock frequencies.

In the iPhone 7, the SoC die is housed in a single housing under the Samsung K3RG1G10CM-YGCH RAM chip assembly. chips total capacity 2 GB are placed in the same plane, which also made the body a little thinner. By the way, the iPhone 7 Plus, unlike the standard size model, has 3 GB of RAM.

SSD, wireless

With the iPhone 6s, Apple pioneered a PCI-Express and NVMe-based storage drive. There is no reason to believe that the iPhone 7 has taken a step back to the eMMC interface in this regard. One of the highlights of the iPhone 7 is its wide color display. Starting with the iMac and iPad Pro, Apple has been steadily implementing DCI-P3 support into its devices. Connoisseurs of professional monitors have extended color gamut associated with another space - Adobe RGB. DCI-P3 covers 25% more colors in the visible spectrum than sRGB and is roughly equivalent to Adobe RGB in terms of coverage. The updated main camera of the device also shoots in the DCI-P3 color space and is improved in other ways compared to the iPhone 6s camera. The camera resolution (12 megapixels) has not been increased, but the new matrix from Sony, according to official data, provides 60% faster autofocus and consumes 30% less power. The resolution of the front camera was increased from 5 to 7 megapixels, which made it possible to shoot video in 1080p format.

The speaker in the upper part of the case is now a full-fledged loudspeaker, which, in combination with the lower speaker, works in stereo mode. And, as everyone already knows, the iPhone 7 no longer has a mini-jack connector for outputting sound to external speakers. iPhone 7 comes with EarPods with a Lightning connector and a mini-jack to Lightning adapter. This accessory is not as simple as it seems. The adapter contains a DAC. However, the iPhone 7 itself contains three audio signal amplifiers: two are obviously for stereo speakers, but the purpose of the latter is unknown. A possible answer to the riddle is that the Lightning port on the iPhone 7 learned to pass analog audio, but to make the adapter compatible with older Apple technology, it was equipped with a DAC.

Appearance

Design iPhone 7 in general does not differ from its two predecessors, has the same dimensions as the iPhone 6s and almost the same weight. However, the principles of aesthetics, embedded in the iPhone 6, the creators of the "seven" brought to perfection. The first thing that catches your eye is the plastic strips separating the zones wifi antennas and cellular communication, shifted to the edges of the case. In two new color options iPhone 7 ("black" and "black onyx") they visually merge with the metal cover - so well that the white and gray stripes in other colors already look like a flaw.

The iPhone 7 eliminated other design flaws of the previous two generations. The lens of the main camera has become not only larger (due to the increased aperture), but also a little longer (an additional lens). As a result, he still towers over back cover, but instead of a separate ring, it is surrounded by a neat rise of the surface. The peephole is moved to the corner formed by the plastic divider, which looks much more harmonious compared to the iPhone 6/6s lens, sandwiched between the dividers in a seemingly random position.

By the way, Apple claims that both the main camera lens and the home button sensor are covered with sapphire (that is, corundum) glass. However, according to some evidence on the Internet, both glasses are by no means as scratch resistant as sapphire should be - unlike the glasses in the iPhone 6s. Apple has not yet responded to these messages.

There is also no more misplaced shiny dimple between the volume buttons. All buttons feel slightly stiffer than on the iPhone 6/6s and produce a more muffled sound. The Lightning port bezel on black models and the screw heads around it are also painted black. The speaker holes on the bottom are absolutely symmetrical due to the absence of a mini-jack connector.

In the triumph of minimalism, which is the iPhone 7, you can only find fault with the thinnest plastic frame between the screen glass and the metal case, without which Apple could well do without, as is done in Apple Watch. However, it is possible that the frame has a functional purpose: plastic can distribute the impact energy during a fall, which would be especially dangerous in the case of direct contact between metal and glass of a large area.

The home button below the screen is no longer a physical button. Beneath the sapphire crystal disc is a pressure-sensitive Force Touch sensor, and the tapping sensation is caused by the electromagnetic “hammer” of the Taptic Engine. To be honest, the "emulation" of a physical button on the iPhone 7 isn't quite as accurate as the Mac's Force Touch touchpads (which feel completely indistinguishable from mechanical ones). However, the effect is pleasant (especially at the maximum impact force, which is adjustable) and at first causes an addiction similar to that of seeds or bubble wrap.

Button presses are recorded flawlessly and as fast as human fingers are capable of. In addition, the sensor responds only to fingers or objects that are similar in electrical properties and area.

Force Touch in the home button plays the same role as 3D Touch in the screen. Light pressure unlocks the phone or opens the desktop, harder calls Siri. However, it would be better if the deep press was accompanied by a second "click" - this is not the case now.

In any case, replacing a physical key with a pressure sensor means that there is one less mechanical component in the smartphone that is subject to wear and tear. In addition, a fixed "home" button could be needed for another achievement of the iPhone 7 - protection against ingress of dust and moisture of the IP67 standard. The case is able to withstand immersion in water to a depth of 1 m for 30 minutes.
