Sony VAIO Z21 review: the world's lightest laptop. Sony VAIO T11 - a miniature ultrabook from Sony The best Sony Vayo laptops

So, below is a full test of the thinnest and lightest laptop in the world on the latest generation Intel processors with standard voltage, the new flagship of Sony.

It seems to me that Sony did the right thing. The previous Z did not suit me in terms of physical dimensions (the thickness reached 32 mm), while the new product is exactly 2 times (!) Thinner and fits into any case. Well, the weight of 1.162 kg is an achievement, there have never been such lightweight models in the world. Previous record holders Samsung Series 9 (900X3A) and MacBook Air weigh more than 1.3 kg, have a comparable thickness, and at the same time are based on ULV-processors with the corresponding frequency (1.4 GHz in the same Samsung). I think there is no need to explain the difference with the full-fledged Core i5 and i7 in the new VAIO Z. After my first reviews in social networks most commentators began to compare Z with MacBook Pro but, sorry, the latter are twice as heavy. From all that has been said, a simple conclusion suggests itself. Sony has made an expensive and unique piece for businessmen (as it is positioned), as well as for all people who value mobility and lightness. In this, the VAIO Z has no equal.

Now let's move on to the main character, VAIO VPCZ21V9R (this is the full name of the laptop in the maximum configuration). So, the characteristics:

As for the dimensions and weight of the new VAIO Z, I have already said that they are minimal, which is very attractive. It is worth taking a laptop in hand, scenarios for its use are immediately drawn. With such a thickness, you no longer have to put up with insufficient performance, as is the case with the same Samsung Series 9, while the new product is even lighter. The Samsung laptop was not in the spotlight for long, the guys from Sony again showed that there is still gunpowder in the powder flasks. Imagine they were a more powerful (but the same in weight and thickness) update to the current Z model, it would not impress anyone. The trend of the year is ultra-thin laptops, a fact that needs to be resigned to.

Sony VAIO Z21 on the scales: 1.162 kg

Design, device

The design of the Z21 is not at all similar to its predecessor, but to SB laptops and the ultra-thin VAIO X presented in 2009. I like this pointedly angular style, no rounded ends, completely uniform thickness throughout the entire body area. Comparing the Z21 and the X, you can see a lot of similarities, the latter only being slightly longer and wider due to the larger screen.

As for the comparison with the Z13, we also provide it to you. Pay special attention to the thickness of the devices, the new product is exactly two times thinner.

The keyboard panel with the palm rest is made of a solid aluminum plate, it is completely matte, which is very pleasing. The upper and lower parts of the laptop are carbon, the hinge connecting the parts is aluminum. There is no plastic here, unlike Samsung, there is not a single glossy surface. In a word, positive vibrations prevail.

The top cover is carbon fiber, it looks great, which is important - the matte material does not collect fingerprints.

Let's take a look at what's inside the laptop. Let me remind you that this is the world's first device of this size for Intel chips with standard voltage. We are used to thin ULV models (there are many of them - Dell, Samsung, Lenovo), but now Sony is taking the lead. Inside the laptop, everything is packed as tightly as possible, in fact, at the presentation it was noted that due to the special design motherboard the laptop is only assembled in Japan.

So, the board is one-sided (see photo), which made it possible to reduce the thickness so much. Next - applied new system cooling with two fans, the laptop should not get so hot. Third generation used SSD drives, WEB-camera with Sony module Exmor with backlight technology (more comfortable communication in low light conditions).

Display

In addition to updated looks and new processors, the Z-series has received new displays. The screen has been improved once again, the standard resolution is 1600x900 pixels, there are modifications with Full HD screens, but at 13.1 inches and the standard resolution looks great. The screen has an interesting feature: the display is covered with a special matte reflective layer that reduces glare from incident light. At a cursory glance at the screen, you might think that a matte matrix is installed in the laptop, but in reality this is not so - the display of the novelty has a mirror substrate, but, unlike glossy screens, it does not glare. Due to this, the display displays 96% Adobe RGB, although the viewing angles could be larger. But for TN matrices, its characteristics are ideal, to say the least, and the screen looks great in real life.

There is a built-in light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen (as well as the keyboard backlight). The opening angle is about 145 degrees, which is quite normal.

The system now has a horizontal bar at the top of the VAIO Gate screen, which contains application icons, bookmarks, RSS and so on. Nice nice addition in the style of MAC OS.

Ports and connectors

VAIO Z models have always had good connectivity and plenty of ports, but the Z21 breaks this tradition. There are only 2 (!) USB, one of which is 3.0 and is combined with a high-speed port for connecting accessories. The set is really strange for a business decision. When connecting a mouse and a flash drive, you can forget about the rest of the accessories. The docking station partially solves this problem, but without it everything is pretty sad.

In addition to USB, there are two slots for SD / MMC and MS HG Duo memory cards, HDMI connectors, Ethernet (RJ-45), Jack 3.5 mm. On the left side there is only a fan grill and a VGA connector. At the front, the engineers have placed indicator lights that inform about the battery status, hard disk operation and the activity of wireless adapters.

Keyboard and touchpad

Compared to its predecessor, the keyboard unit of the updated Z-series has also undergone changes. The topcase is a solid aluminum plate with holes for the keys and touchpad, but the buttons themselves are slightly different. Due to the smaller thickness, their travel has also decreased, but, despite this, the ergonomics of the keyboard are still one of the best: the island-type keys are distinguished by a clear response and almost silent operation.

Like its predecessor's keyboard, the new VAIO Z21 is backlit. Look, it looks great due to the absence of stripes along the edges of the buttons, only symbols are highlighted. There is also an inconvenience - the borders of the buttons are not visible. There is a sensor for automatic brightness control, on top - a switch wireless connections and the traditional VAIO set of buttons Assist, WEB, VAIO.

Functional features

The insides of the VAIO Z21 are no less impressive than its thickness. At the presentation it was said more than once that no manufacturer could fit such a set in such a case. What are processors worth Intel Core i5 and i7 of the latest generation with standard voltage. The laptop allows you to watch heavy video, work, edit photos / videos, maybe play on maximum settings it will be difficult, because there is no discrete graphics card. Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics can be played at medium settings, and the system score is 5.7. Let me remind you that the closest configuration Sony VAIO SB with AMD discrete graphics has a score of 5.9.

The VPCZ21V9R has an Intel Core i5-2410M processor with a frequency of 2.30 GHz. The laptop is installed: 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, 256 GB SSD and wireless Wi-Fi adapters - 802.11b / g / n, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as WiMAX and even a 3G module, and this is - junior configuration. Great set. There is no discrete graphics, but there is Intel GMA HD. In general, for an ultralight and thin laptop, this configuration is just right, especially since if you want to, you can connect a media dock that increases performance graphics system due to the discrete graphics of the Radeon HD 6630M.

There is also an older configuration, which is distinguished by the presence of Intel Core i7-2620M processors, the base frequency of which is 2.70 GHz (with Turbo Boost acceleration up to 3.40 GHz), 256 GB SSD and 8 GB SDRAM DDR3.

Performance and benchmark results

Thanks to Intel processor Core i5 standard voltage and good integrated graphics subsystem the VAIO Z21 can handle almost any task except the graphics-intensive ones. The laptop is even able to entertain its owner with modern games. To assess the gaming capabilities of the device, I used demos of a couple of popular games. The tests were carried out in the "Speed" mode, all game scenarios were run at the "default" settings and at 1600x900 pixels.

In Resident Evil 5, the benchmark showed 18.9 FPS, Street Fighter IV using DirectX 11 showed an average 28.87 FPS (Score 7108). For S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the result is shown in the diagram below.

Choosing a lower resolution when playing the game, the result is naturally better.

If you focus only on numbers, then a disappointing conclusion for a game lover suggests itself, but a laptop with integrated graphics cannot be called a gaming laptop from the very beginning. For games, there is a Power Media Dock station, with which the results are much better, thanks for this is a discrete AMD graphics card Radeon HD 6630M. The tests clearly showed how the performance in games differs, and for what purposes the integrated graphics of the laptop will suffice.

If we are talking about a test PCMark 05, then the values are more than expected. The computer is doing well with the CPU tests, in contrast to the results of ULV competitors like, high performance in graphics and memory tests, in which it even outperforms its counterpart. For an ultra-thin and light laptop, the results are excellent, and it's hard to disagree.

3DMark 03 benchmarks show the result 7178 , 3DMark Vantage demonstrates 1346 GPU Score and 8888 CpuScore which is quite consistent with all other laptops with integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics, no miracles or differences.

PCMark 07 Results

I was pleasantly surprised by the SSD solid-state drive, which, by the way, is of its own production. It showed quite a lot of points, overtaking its closest competitors in the face of the same Samsung Series 9 with a fast solid-state drive (albeit only 128 GB in the maximum configuration, unlike Sony). Data transfer rates are record-breaking, access time is at the level best SSD competitors.

In the same paragraph, I will mention the noise. The laptop uses a new cooling system, now there are two fans, this is due to the need to reduce the size and thickness of the fans due to the thin case. Two fans do an excellent job, even after a whole day of running performance tests, the laptop did not overheat, but there is also a downside to the coin, their very noisy operation in maximum performance mode, when watching heavy video, playing games. In all other cases, the fans are practically silent, at first I did not notice them at all.

Power Media Dock

Along with the new VAIO Z, the Power Media Dock was also introduced, which acts as an addition to the laptop and is needed for certain tasks. This dock hides a Blu-ray drive, graphics accelerator AMD Radeon HD with 1GB video memory, plus additional USB ports and VGA and HDMI outputs. Thus, Sony was "taken out" additional functions from a laptop case, considering that for heavy work at home or in the office, you can use the docking station, while getting maximum performance. With the Power Media Dock, you can also connect three external monitors to your VAIO Z laptop (not including the laptop itself) via HDMI and / or VGA outputs. Quite an original solution, I don't think that many people will need this docking station strongly (or often).

Battery life

The notebook is equipped with a 4-cell rechargeable battery with a capacity of 4300 mAh (model VGP-BPS27 / X). The battery is not removable, so it will not be possible to replace it quickly unless the laptop is disassembled. The results of work in the test mode surprised me very pleasantly, I thought that the devices would work much less with such processors. So, a full charge of the battery lasts for 5 hours 50 minutes in standby mode with the screen on and for 2 hours and 35 minutes at maximum load. This is completely comparable to ULV models and surpasses the same Sony VAIO SB, Lenovo T410s and other business competitors.

To increase the time autonomous work VAIO Z21 got the ability to connect an additional battery. The battery is attached to the bottom of the laptop and, with the increase in its "lifespan", adds an extra tens of millimeters of thickness and a couple of hundred grams of weight to the slender and fit model. The exact same solution can be seen in the VAIO S, as well as competitors - HP offered a similar secondary battery design for its Envy models about two years ago. But, unlike the aforementioned laptops, the extra millimeters of thickness do not harm the Z21 so much, since with the battery connected, it only approaches the same S in terms of overall dimensions without an additional battery. And it is in the case of a new product that I consider such a battery to be more or less a justified accessory.

A good impression was also left by the power adapter, which has become noticeably smaller compared to its predecessor. However, the relatively massive block on the wire remained, the competitors have solved this issue better. There is also a second charger with a high output voltage, which is used to charge the laptop with the Power Media Dock connected.

Opinion Mail.Ru

After using the laptop for several days, I can say that my conclusions after the presentation were as correct as possible. Colleagues are delighted with the lightness and thickness of the new VAIO Z, and so much so that the lack of discrete graphics is not perceived as a drawback. And for the newest and most powerful Core i5 and i7 with standard energy efficiency in such a case, Sony engineers can only be thanked. So you won't be able to play the latest games at the highest settings, but is it necessary? I do not think. But carrying with you a truly mobile and lightest solution in the world has become much more pleasant. Again, 1.162 kg and 16.6 mm maximum thickness are record parameters for 13-inch notebooks.

As for the prices, they are like that. The younger version with Core i5, 128 GB SSD, 4 GB RAM will cost 69,990 rubles. The older one with Core i7, 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, complete with Power Media Dock costs 119,990 rubles. Between them there are modifications for 84,990 and 99,990 rubles, here the amount of memory and the presence of a docking station in the kit vary. What I want to say. I'll leave the older modifications alone, since, in my opinion, the Media Dock is an unnecessary thing, and let's talk about the younger one. 70 thousand rubles for the thinnest and lightest 13-inch laptop with the best hardware to date. Neither more nor less, it is. Let me remind you that the same Samsung Series 9 (900X3A) with a 1.4 GHz Core i5 processor costs 60 thousand rubles. The difference, almost weightless in this segment, but what a difference in functionality.

So I will not argue about whether the VAIO Z21 is expensive, judge for yourself and compare with competitors. But from the point of view of me and my colleagues, I will say that the younger modification of the new Z-ki is what has been expected from Sony for a long time. Not extremely expensive (70 thousand rubles in Russia), but at the same time without any direct competitors.

The thinnest, lightest, most stylish ... a fashionable toy for the rich

When testing laptops of the class in which Sony VAIOs of some series are confidently staying and where other manufacturers are trying to penetrate, the same question always arises - what, in fact, should be described in the review?

After all, laptops of this class are chosen primarily for their stylish appearance, as well as for their place in the market, and this has very little to do with the functional characteristics of the product as such. Naturally, such parameters as performance, functionality and usability are of some importance, but by no means decisive: no one will refuse to buy such a laptop due to the fact that in some of these indicators it lags behind the leaders. The capabilities of the laptop just have to be enough for the daily (and, most likely, simple) tasks of the owner - and that's it.

They choose such a laptop, we repeat, for its appearance, but it is better to watch this thing live when the effect is "ah, I want it!" maximum. And for the high price “for the rich”, for the product's recognition as “the best,” and this cannot be conveyed in an online review. However, in this review I will try to give our readers a general idea of the new Sony VAIO X laptop.

Frame

The Sony VAIO X is being marketed as the world's thinnest laptop - and it catches your eye at first glance. In numbers, its thickness is 13.9 mm and no more, but the numbers do not convey the whole impression. In terms of thickness, the laptop is about the same as an average mobile phone, but at the same time its significantly longer length and width visually further reduce the thickness of the case. In addition, the laptop is made in black, which also looks slimmer. Therefore, it looks almost like an envelope on the table.

By the way, there are three colors for VAIO X - matte black, carbon and gold. I personally didn't like the golden one very much, but if a woman will use the laptop, then this is a good option. In the other two colors, the VAIO X looks exactly what a laptop like this should look like. "Matt black" and "carbon" fit the model perfectly.

The lid is very thin, it “plays” with might and main when you lift it. However, it resists kinking more than models with larger diagonal screen, I did not have the feeling that it would break now. Although I, for obvious reasons, did not experiment with what kind of abuse the lid will withstand, but dragging the laptop by the top edge of the screen is probably not worth it.

When the lid is closed, when an angle of about 20 degrees remains, the lid is brought in by itself. This creates exactly the impression that is needed: a product that guesses the owner's wishes and helps him.

Let's open the lid. The lid itself, as we have already noted, is very thin. The side edge is corrugated, so it is convenient to lift the lid. You cannot lift the lid with one hand, even though the hinges are slightly tight. The case is so light that it easily rises with the lid.

The impression of a slim body with open lid it only gets stronger. Despite the fact that the contours of the case are simple enough, the laptop still looks very stylish and expensive.

The assembly is, of course, at the highest level. The case plays a little if you deliberately bend it, but with normal use it successfully resists: you can wear the VAIO X without any problems. I can't say how dangerous it is to drop the laptop, but the case looks sturdy. Plus, the VAIO X is very lightweight, which is a plus when dropped. And the use of SSD allows you not to worry about the safety of data in this case. It also seems to me that this model should not be scratched.

By the way, here I will also note one important feature, namely, the heating of the case. With an ultra-thin laptop, this will obviously always be a significant problem. Because inside the case you cannot make normal ventilation, you cannot carry out normal ventilation ducts, you cannot install a good fan. And at the same time, you also need to make sure that the palm rests remain cold.

To the credit of the designers of Sony VAIO X, they did what they could. Therefore, it is mainly the bottom that heats up, but it heats up significantly, even when performing office tasks. It is unpleasant to keep the laptop on your lap after an hour of work, and it is almost impossible on the palm of your hand - it burns. A special warning is pasted on the bottom surface that the laptop must be operated on a solid surface to ensure ventilation: after all, the ventilation grilles are located at the bottom.

In addition, the designers have implemented a large number of small tricks aimed at better ventilation of the case. When you open the lid, two protrusions on the far end of the lid seem to raise the laptop, creating the gap necessary for air exhaust. In addition, there are special legs on the bottom of the laptop that can be pulled out - this increases the gap under the bottom and puts the keyboard in a more comfortable position for typing.

But let's digress from the enthusiasm for the thin case and take a look at the location of the connectors.

The photo perfectly illustrates how thin and sleek the laptop is (it's a shame it can't convey light weight). Paying attention to the edge of the screen and the case is a specially made stiffener, which gives the case additional strength.

There are two card readers on the front edge. Sony supports its own Memory Stick standard while being forced to support the much more common SD. Representatives of the company have repeatedly noted that if you make two separate card readers, they will turn out to be much thinner than if you try to pack them into a single case. In this model, we see the result once again. Here you can see where the indicators are located.

There are no connectors on the back, and there cannot be: this panel is closed with a lid when the laptop is open.

On the left side there is a power connector (traditionally for Sony connectors, it raises some doubts about its durability), a Kensington lock port, two USB port(for a super-portable model - a good indicator) and the only audio jack for headphones.

On the right side there is an analog output to the VGA monitor: Sony engineers considered that it was exactly what this model was needed. Please note that the thickness of the connector is the thickest part of the laptop, i.e. if you connect a regular cable with a thick connector to it, then, most likely, a closed laptop will not stand on its legs, but will lie on this connector. There is a connector for a wired network nearby. It is closed by a cover, which at the same time fixes the connector in the open position.

The bottom of the laptop. As you can see, almost half is battery. Moreover, this is the front part of the laptop, which is very competent in terms of weight distribution: the laptop does not tend to lean back on its knees. In my opinion, this is a very important aspect of ergonomics, which shows how engineers and designers care about users. By the way, pay attention: the color of the bottom of the case differs from the color of the top cover, it really is the same shade as in the photo.

Configuration

The site uses a lot of flash animation, which can cause stuttering on slow or busy channels. I liked the design, it is completely in line with Sony products and creates the right mood. The search is relatively easy, if you search for a product through the flash menu, you have to scroll through the feed of models. For each model, the diagonal of the screen is indicated (and this is good: you can roughly estimate the size of the laptop and what class it belongs to), the main advantage (for example, "ease of use" for NS and "glossy surface" for CW) and an interesting aspect of technical characteristics (" desktop power "or" 4 USB ports ").

It emphasizes, first of all, the uniquely small case thickness of 13.9 mm and the weight of 780 grams. The second important, from the point of view of the manufacturer, advantage - ample connectivity, including a cellular modem with 3G support. Finally, the long battery life is highlighted - up to 8 hours with the main battery and up to 16 hours with an additional, increased capacity.

A set of stylish accessories for the model is offered separately.

Let me remind you that initially there are only two models in the line, they differ in the processor (Atom Z550 and 540), as well as in the size of the SSD disk (256 and 128 GB). Let's look at the technical characteristics of the model that has been tested (please note that this is a sample, therefore, it may differ from the ones we received). As usual, on the left is the official specification, on the right is the data from the Everest test utility taken from the tested machine.

As you can see, for slim body I had to pay with performance: the platform is weak. How well the laptop copes with office tasks, we will see below.

Testing

Performance, test results

Let's move on to the results of integral synthetic tests. First, as usual, we measure the integrated performance of the system in the PCMark 05 and Vantage packages, 3Dmark06 (the results of the SM2.0, HDR / SM3, CPU subtests in parentheses), Cinebench (performance test 1 core / 2 cores / work in OpenGL).

Although in this case some of the tests had to be abandoned - PCMark Vantage is too powerful for this platform, its use is pointless. The same applies to 3Dmark06.

As you can see, the results are roughly in line with expectations. The processor is weak, the graphics are weak (although it should be enough for normal applications). The SSD shines predictably, although in absolute numbers it's not as fast as you'd expect from this type of media.

Battery life

Testing was carried out in three modes: minimum load (reading text from the screen), watching a movie, maximum productivity when all subsystems are involved. Tests were carried out in the OS Windows Vista, the energy saving parameters were set to a minimum in the first test and to adaptive values in the second and third. The screen brightness was always set to maximum.

Passport capacity 33590 mWh.

Sony VAIO X
Reading from the screen

5 h. 35 min.

Left to itself with an open book and with the screen turned on at maximum, the laptop turned off after five and a half hours - well, this is a good result, although 8 hours were promised (with such durations of work, this may well be explained, for example, by the fact that the matrix worked at a minimum , not at the maximum).

The laptop stubbornly resisted trying to measure battery life when playing video. The estimated result is 4 and a half hours, but these are approximate figures predicted by the operating system.

Impressions of use

Keyboards and positioners

The manufacturer has done a lot to make the keyboard comfortable, but it is obvious that with such a small case, compromises in the construction of the keyboard are inevitable.

Despite the lack of space, the width of the main keys used for touch typing has been preserved: they are not different from larger notebooks. However, the keyboard is smaller than, for example, in Z-series laptops by about 4 cm. It is quite logical that the side keys have become shorter, this has almost no effect on typing. In addition, unfortunately, two keys in the lower right row are squeezed, on which the letter "U" and punctuation marks are in the Russian layout. Therefore, everything is complicated with a comma and a period ... All keys are compressed vertically and quite significantly. This practically does not affect the level of typos, but you have to get used to the keyboard.

Noteworthy is the very small key travel, about half that of a conventional laptop keyboard. Because of this, the first time when typing, the feeling is very strange. However, we must pay tribute to the engineers, the keyboard turned out to be more comfortable than it could have.

When typing, the peculiarities of the keyboard appear quite strongly. I don’t know if it was due to the location of the keys or because of the very short stroke, but it was difficult to achieve high typing speed, even though I could not identify any bright shortcomings that were to blame for this. At the same time, I typed on TZ much faster.

One of the drawbacks or, let's say, features of this keyboard - if you want to press the right "Shift", then you accidentally get on the "up" arrow of the cursor, which leads to a jump up instead of entering text.

As for the pluses, it can be noted that the Fn key is duplicated in this model, the second one is located in the right corner of the keyboard. This is very convenient because allows you to implement all combinations with one hand.

In general, the keyboard will not be a nuisance for those looking at the keyboard or typing with two fingers. Typing blindly on it at a machine-gun pace will not work anyway. However, I think the keyboard is close to optimal if you're used to Sony keyboards.

Touchpad

The touchpad in this model is comfortable: with the correct rough surface. It is well tuned, when you move your finger at an average speed, two swipes are enough to move the cursor across the entire screen. WITH Windows system 7 the touchpad also supports multi-touch functions. The touchpad is located in the middle of the case, so you don't touch it with your palm when typing.

The touchpad has two keys. They are large enough in area, but at the same time with a relatively hard pressure. It is convenient to use them.

Additional keys and indicators

The VAIO X has a power indicator built into the power button, it glows green during operation, and flashes red in standby mode, like on other Sony notebooks. An interesting solution has been applied here: the power symbol is lit green (it is directed upwards) and a strip on the side of the button that goes to the side edge - it shows the state of the laptop with the lid closed. Indicators for battery status, hard drive activity, and wireless interfaces placed on the front panel, under the touchpad. In principle, if you look specifically, you can see them during work, but you don't always notice them out of the corner of your eye. The keyboard modifier indicators are located above the keyboard. The diodes in all indicators are weak, they can be seen if you look directly at them, but they do not distract from work even in the dark. If the laptop is turned on in semi-darkness (for example, when watching a presentation or video), then only the power button will glow brightly.

There are no additional keys for this laptop at all, which is not surprising given such a case size. There are traditional features: there is no keyboard shortcut to send the laptop to sleep, there is only a combination of hibernation. Otherwise, everything is similar to other Sony products, if you've worked with them, getting used to the VAIO X will be easy.

Screen

This laptop is equipped with a widescreen matrix with a diagonal of 11.1 inches and a resolution of 1366x768. The range of adjustment is very wide: at maximum its brightness is enough to work in light of any brightness (although I did not try to work in direct sunlight, it was not possible), at the minimum level of backlight, you can work in complete darkness, the screen does not hurt the eyes and does not illuminate the whole dark room.

The screen, although not so important for a fashionable work laptop, has acceptable viewing angles, i.e. when the screen is looking directly at the user, the colors and tints are relatively stable. This allows you to comfortably view photos and watch movies without any problems. By the way, let's talk about the films separately.

Sound

Traditionally, I emphasize that the sound in a laptop of this class does not play a serious role. The maximum that it can be intended for is sounding system events, maybe telephony. It seemed to me that the sound is a little fuzzy, because sometimes it is difficult to make out the voice of the interlocutor.

Subjective impressions

Here I would like to briefly summarize my personal impressions of a brief use of the Sony VAIO X.

The appearance of the laptop evokes the same "wow!" in men and "oooh!" among women. And a single "I want!" for everyone who does not hide their feelings with a neutral "why do I need it?" A slim, graceful toy that everyone loves. You want to have such a thing, carry it with you, etc. In other words, by purchasing a VAIO X laptop, you can safely say: pleasant emotions and envy of others are guaranteed. Moreover, all those around, and not only those who "understand the subject": the main highlight of X is in its appearance.

It is convenient to work with a laptop if you do not impose excessive demands on, for example, a keyboard. How user device for "surfing the Internet" and similar tasks, plus simple business applications (the same mail), it suits very well.

There are still questions about the performance of the laptop. It was already running Windows 7, and it felt like the system slowed down: for example, windows opened slowly and without smooth animation. And this I speak purely about office applications! When playing films, brakes were also sometimes visible, and this is also a mysterious fact: theoretically, this should not be. I haven't seen netbooks with the new OS yet, so I can't say if this is a typical situation for Atom or not. Plus, we still had a sample, perhaps the commercial models will work faster. However, the performance level seemed weak to me.

The second aspect is heating. I have already written about it, but I will emphasize again: in some conditions, especially in hot summer, it can be unpleasant to work with a laptop on your lap for a long time. the bottom panel gets very hot.

Positioning and conclusions

I don't think there is much to say about the positioning of this model. Obviously, this laptop is aimed at rich people: it has too poor price-performance ratio. And not just a rich person will buy it, but someone who is ready to spend money on an expensive toy. Style, comfort, convenience - all these considerations are important when buying a VAIO X, but the opinion about the model, the impression it makes on others, is also important.

Sony VAIO X may well play the role of an elegant technological gift, for example, for a lady - but also in the upper circles of society, where expensive gifts are in use. But it is also a functional gift, not a trinket.

VAIO X is by no means aimed at professionals, it is ready for simple office work and some entertainment, nothing more. The laptop sometimes slows down even in ordinary office applications, to say nothing of more serious tasks.

Therefore, even the pros and cons of a model in this class are strikingly different from the pros and cons of conventional consumer notebooks.

Pros: It's a sony (this is a Sony product, in itself it is a sign of quality, style, pretentiousness of the owner and position in society); very stylish, and style X is style top level; Thin, light, sleek - and best in class for these parameters. And, of course, convenient. The rest is secondary.

Minuses? The disadvantages of ergonomics are listed in the article, as well as the pros, but they will not have much impact on the choice. The high price is not a minus of the model, it is its feature that allows you to isolate the right circle of buyers. Rich people recognize each other by such expensive toys (although it is somewhat presumptuous to talk about this in our country with a highly developed business of selling used Vertu phones). X is a special laptop, another elite pontoon toy. Yes, soon it will be replaced by another toy, but also with the VAIO logo on the lid, and then X will repeat the fate of, for example, TZ. In the meantime, this is a new fashionable toy, a gadget, which should be purchased by everyone who is aware of fashion trends, who appreciates style ... And so on.
