When will htc u 11. Review HTC U11: a smartphone with flagship features, but not without flaws. HTC U11 Plus with modern display design

We welcome all caring smartphone lovers on our portal, as well as those who are interested in HTC U11 Plus!

Today it will be about this wonderful gadget. This is a model update that we told you about back in the middle of summer. The update turned out to be quite decent, only the price is scary (but for the flagship it is acceptable), the body's soiled and the lack of a headphone jack. As for the rest, we will praise the device today, that is, talk about its advantages. Let's start with the technical specifications:

Appearance.

Let's start with the kit. He's rich enough. The box with the smartphone contains Charger, USB-C cable, an adapter for headphones, the headphones themselves, a bumper case, otherwise the HTC U11 Plus is very slippery without it. It is made of glass, quite strong and easily soiled.

You can see in contrast the beauty of the smartphone and how much it gets dirty when used.

Fortunately, the device can be easily wiped off with a rag.

The screen simply complements the unrivaled design of the device. The display is designed in a two-to-one format. This is already a new trend that is conquering the market. Every company should now have a flagship in this format. HTC has got a decent device.

It looks just gorgeous, but it weighs a lot, almost 190 grams. Considering that it is slippery and large, the risk of dropping is very high.

Below is the USB-C connector, microphone and speaker.

On the right are the power and volume buttons. And on the back on the body is a fingerprint scanner, a camera flash and another microphone. There are 4 of them on the body, the third one can be found at the bottom of the device on the back.

Well, the last one is located on top, next to it there is a slot.

We suggest you once again enjoy the greatness and beauty of HTC U11 Plus and say a special "thank you" to the designers for such a handsome man.

Shell.

She is peculiar. A-brand is obliged from the point of view of the interface to amaze, surprise in order to stand out among competitors, because the struggle for sales flagship smartphones form an overall opinion about the company. Our HTC U11 Plus has a functional plus shell is supported by one unique "feature" that is not found anywhere else (apart from Google pixel from HTC, but there this feature works by%)

On the desktop there is a branded beautiful widget with a weather and a huge clock, it looks worthy! There are many useful things you can do in the app menu, such as resizing the grid, hiding apps, and more.

The curtain is standard, systemic, practically no different from the drain. There are enough widgets, plus you can also download it.

The device works naturally based on Android 8. There is a whole list standard settings plus, as you can see, the Edge Sence feature.

What are you, Edge Sence? This is the "feature" that we talked about above. The thing is interesting enough. You squeeze HTC U11 Plus in your hand and a predetermined action takes place. For example, in our case, a short squeeze of the body will take the picture. You can adjust for any action, you can and should adjust the compression force.

In addition, there is also a standard gesture control, as well as changing buttons on the navigation bar. Of the gestures, we note the block / unlock of the smartphone with a double tap, a very popular and convenient thing.

Also, the smartphone supports as many as three voice assistants. Three voice assistants - HTC Companion, Google Assistant and Amazon Alex, not working in Russia yet. If the relationship with one did not work out, then go to the second, if you started to miss the third, go to it.

Performance.

HTC U11 Plus is very fast and no less smart, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 8 cores up to 2.45 GHz. Responsible for the video is Adreno 540. Games are going with a bang and will go on like this for a long time, even “run”. We tested a version with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of main memory (52.4 available for use). There is also a model with 6 GB of "RAM" and 128 GB of internal memory. If these volumes are not enough for you, then instead of a SIM card, you can put a 256 GB memory card. The Antutu test showed us as much as 200 thousand points, we will soon reach a million.

Battery.

We praised the regular version for its good battery life, and the plus version turned out to be even better. She received a 3930 mAh battery. At maximum brightness, given the huge display, the real battery test showed an excellent result - 8 hours 40 minutes of video at maximum brightness. At the same time, there are also power saving modes, they are always well thought out by HTC.

Screen.

U11 Plus got huge, colorful, bright screen diagonal 6 inches. Screens of HTC are unusual, they are made using Super LCD 6 technology (similar to IPS technology). The resolution is almost prohibitive - 22880 × 1440, but for 6 inches this is quite normal, as a result we get 537 pixels per inch.

Also note the presence of a color profile and the ability to change the color temperature.

And there is also the ability to set smart brightness control, set up Always on display, enable glove control mode, use night mode.

Cameras.

The way the cameras take pictures in this smartphone is a wild delight. One of the best camera phones available today. The detail in the pictures is just excellent, the colors are natural.

The main camera module is 12 MP.

Of course, without optical stabilization, it would be foolish to release a flagship today, so it is here.

Pictures even in the dark turn out to be quite attractive, right?

The originals of the photos and the original video can be viewed at the link.

Front-camera although it lost in megapixels (compared to u11), there are now only 8 of them, but the quality of the images remains at the same high level.

Connection.

As always, there are no complaints about this parameter. Everything is the freshest, NFC is there, but FM radio was not brought up.

Results.

HTC U11 Plus is quite expensive, but practically without weak points, although we still tried to find some. The device is beautiful, powerful and modern. With a huge number of competitors, but in some ways it surpasses them, take at least stereo speakers, not every today's flagship can boast of them.

Smartphone video review:

However, the emergence of the current trend of (almost) bezelless displays, which was set by Xiaomi (with Mi Mix) and above all from Samsung, HTC slept a little. Despite the fact that the HTC U11 is a superb smartphone with still unrivaled twilight photo quality, appearance apparatus in direct comparison with Samsung Galaxy S8, Huawei Mate 10 Pro and much less impressive. This shortcoming is largely eliminated in the HTC U11 Plus.

HTC U11 Plus with modern display design

HTC U11 Plus has a 6-inch display with an 18: 9 aspect ratio. It's slightly narrower and longer than the regular one, and offers about 10 percent more screen real estate. The U11 Plus does not have a curved display, and the bezels on the top and bottom, although rather thin, are not so scanty. Huawei Mate 10 Pro, for example, with the same screen diagonal is two millimeters shorter. Despite all this, we like the final result.

HTC says it needed extra space to house the stereo speakers, which should sound louder than the regular U11. Marked with the "Boomsound" designation, we find the sound decent, but not overwhelming. Impressions from Htc one were better. However, the screen has a resolution of 2880x1440 pixels, so the image clarity is about the same as that of the U11. We can subject some criticism rather to the insufficient maximum brightness of the display, but this may well be the fault of the pre-production status software... At the same time, U11 is rather average in this area.

Space on the top and bottom of the front is taken up by stereo speakers

Great workmanship, beautiful colors

The workmanship is excellent. HTC is again relying on glass for the back, which looks great when polished but unfortunately gets covered in fingerprints and smudges very quickly. On the back, under the camera, there is a fingerprint scanner, where it is quite convenient to touch it. Of course, unlike the U11, users will have to pick up their smartphone to unlock it.

The stylish and sophisticated version in the color "Ceramic Black", which is rather a very dark gray metallic or anthracite, looks attractive to our taste. More extravagant can be called the "Translucent Black" version: this version is endowed with a translucent back side, under which you can see a large NFC "coil". We could call this look a successful techno-chic, but most likely not everyone will like it. There should also be a silver version.

The back is chic, highly shiny and susceptible to fingerprints. HTC U11 Plus comes in black and translucent color options

Squeeze cellphone: this is what Edge Sense can do

In the face of Edge Sense, HTC has developed a technology in which, apparently, even Google saw such a great functional and marketing potential that it was applied in smartphones of the Pixel 2 family. Edge Sense allows you to invoke various functions by squeezing the body frames. HTC is trying (unlike Google) to offer as wide a choice as possible, which makes Edge Sense, if fun, definitely useful anyway.

New is, for example, a crescent-shaped mini-launcher of the most popular applications by the user, which is displayed on top of the content on the display.
Alternatively, users can also launch the camera application and take pictures, activate the flashlight, or invoke any other application. You can even customize actions inside the application, for example, turning pages while reading e-books... HTC offers a lot of possibilities here - nevertheless, we do not see a particular revolution in this.

However, Edge control Sense is doing well. We have not noticed any erroneous triggering of the function, and whoever thinks that it is necessary to press too hard on the frames can adjust the sensitivity in the corresponding menu.

Whoever squeezes the frame, he, among other things, can call a mini-launcher

The camera with the best photo quality?

The HTC U11 camera still holds the record in the corresponding category of our rating. mobile phones... In daylight, a large number of smartphones now take excellent photographs. The real problems begin when lighting conditions deteriorate, when too little light hits the often tiny pixels of the sensor, resulting in high levels of noise and reduced detail.

HTC U11 practically does not have this problem even during our testing of the camera in twilight light. this smartphone performed better than all other devices. Only the Google Pixel 2 reaches roughly the same level. Although the U11's white display is a bit chilly (that is, the camera is still not “perfect”), the detail of the hair and threads is remarkable here.

Since the camera from the U11 migrated to the U11 Plus unchanged, and the matrix again has a resolution of 12.2 megapixels with a relatively good pixel spacing of 1.4 microns and a particularly large F1.7 aperture, which allows a lot of light to pass through, we do not have there is no reason to expect any degradation from the camera. There is also an optical image stabilizer. Ultimately, however, our comprehensive laboratory tests will show everything.

U11 Plus records video in 4K (at an assumed 30 frames per second) or in Full-HD resolution at speeds up to 120 fps. HTC integrates four microphones into the housing, which can happen as directional if the user approaches a certain target during shooting, for example, a stage during a concert.

The U11's camera is top-notch. Can the Plus camera beat it?

Huge battery promises a long time autonomous work
HTC U11 Plus is IP-68 protected against prolonged immersion in fresh water. Despite this, at the bottom of the device there is an open USB port 3 Type-C, which serves as an audio jack when connected to the supplied adapter. Unfortunately, the classic 3.5 mm audio jack is not here. HTC also packs a pair of USB-C compatible in-ear headphones, which feature active noise canceling and ultrasound measurement of the ear canal to optimize sound.

We have high hopes for battery life as well, as HTC has bumped up the battery by 30 percent over the regular U11, bringing the battery capacity to 3,930 mAh. The similarly equipped Huawei Mate 10 Pro reached nearly 12 hours of battery life during our endurance tests. Thus, the HTC U11 Plus has the potential to deliver at least equally great results. Technology wireless charging device does not support.

U11 Plus transfers data (and music) via USB Type-C

Android 8 with top-end performance and good equipment

The inside of the smartphone works very fast Snapdragon processor 835, which endows the device with top-level performance. We have not yet had time to carry out tests that are demanding on the resources of the system, but during the first test the device responded to commands smoothly and quickly. Since similarly equipped is one of the fastest on this moment smartphones, we do not expect any unpleasant surprises in this area. Moreover, the size of the RAM has been increased from 4 GB to 6 GB.

Also worthy of praise: large, with a nominal capacity of 128GB, the onboard storage can be expanded further with a Micro-SD card. Alternatively, U11 Plus users can access the network from a second card in Dual-SIM mode. Unlike the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, where LTE speeds are available from both cards, the U11 Plus only offers 4G / 3G. This means, first of all, that the second card will not support Voice-over-LTE. There are also modules on board for gigabit LTE, WLAN ac and Bluetooth 5.0 - this is supported for the first time via.

Users can choose between using a SIM card and a Micro-SD card, or two SIM cards

The HTC U11 Plus has an operating Android system in the current version 8 Oreo under the user interface modified by HTC. As a fairly practical one, we regard the ability to call the info-center from anywhere on the desktop with a swipe down. With such large diagonals the display seems to be particularly useful. HTC wants to keep this smartphone with security and operating system updates for at least 2 years. That's great, but for an expensive top-end model, we would like at least a three-year update delivery time, as promised in the case of.

HTC U11 Plus will go on sale in late November or early December at a price of about 56 thousand rubles. Thus, it will be approximately as expensive as a similarly equipped one. The cost is high, but within the market environment.

The fingerprint reader is located on the back and is reasonably well reached with the index finger

Chip withdrawal

The new HTC U11 Plus looks great, it still feels good in the hand and is top-notch equipped. We have already tried out a new top-class smartphone and are more than satisfied. HTC not only kept everything here strengths smartphone U11, which include superior camera, build quality and performance, but also packed it all into an aesthetically pleasing solution.

HTC U11 Plus has very thin display bezels, an easy-to-reach fingerprint reader located on the back of the case, and an even larger screen. That being said, there are also pressure-sensitive body frames, called Edge Sense, which are useful fun. HTC U11 Plus can be called a very clear contender to be placed at the very top of our ranking of mobile phones.

Advantages and disadvantages

+ superb design with thin bezels
+ expected highest level photo quality
+ Android 8 and top performance
+ very big battery promises long battery life
no classic audio headphone jack
no wireless charging

I haven't tested HTC smartphones for a million years (3 years). For me and not only for me, these devices have long left the market and, if they are present somewhere, it is only by inertia. And then the HTC U11 comes out. Maximum hardware, top-end camera, original design and costs $ 650. What is not a reason buy HTC U11 and do overview? I bought it, I did it.

Where did you come from?

The U10 was presented last year, got a very good camera, but some kind of indistinct design, positioning and generally whiter.

The previous flagship perfectly reflected the general state of affairs at HTC. The company has long been with one foot in the grave (the Vive project is not concerned), their smartphones are not needed by anyone, because they do not offer anything interesting, but are either expensive or very expensive. Well, objectively. The situation in places is even worse than that of Sony. The death throes of both producers have been going on for many years.

And here, on June 16, HTC presents their flagship 2017 - U11. The smartphone has several noteworthy features at once:

  • uncompromising performance
  • aggressive and catchy design
  • top camera on the market (according to DxOMark)
  • a sane price tag of $ 650 (in Russia 44,990 rubles)

Of course, this upstart is worthy to make a full review of it and compare it with competitors, which we will now do.

How devices are assembled in Taiwan

In the packaging of a rather original appearance, a very rich bundle was found.

We look ...

  • charger with QC 3.0 support (5 - 12 Volts and 1.25 - 2.5 Amperes)
  • USB C cable
  • headset with the same plug HTC USonic Adaptive Earphones
  • USB C to 3.5mm adapter
  • plastic case of medium lousy (for the first time it will come down)
  • a cloth for cleaning a smartphone (of course! it is so glossy)
  • paper clip for removing "sim cards"

How is it? The only thing missing is the film on the screen. But wait! HTC is a brand with a worldwide reputation, not some Chinese production uncle Lao. I mean, do you need glass on the screen? Buy yourself!

Without cover

Design

In my opinion, he is beautiful!

On the one hand, it doesn't have any features like curved screens or any non-standard aspect ratio. Just a single block with a screen in the front and a slightly protruding camera in the back.

On the other hand, the device is as glossy as possible. Think Jet Black looks catchy? So the body of the U11 reflects and refracts light even more.

Moreover, its color is deep, rich and very beautiful.

I did not take risks with blue or red cases, but bought a variant called Brillian Black. In fact, only the front panel is black here.

But the color of the back, I would call dark emerald. With a slight pearlescent sheen. In general, the whole thing looks awesome.

The back cover, by the way, is not metal, polished to a shine, but tempered glass specially created with the help of an army of underground gnomes with multilayer mineralization of something like that.

In general, we are interested in something else. What about prints and scratches?

Fingerprints, of course, accumulate, but they are almost invisible. Both front and back we have a very cool oleophobic coating. Because of it, the device is incredibly slippery.

Our standard "ears" have a USB Type-C plug. And they also support the HTC USonic profile, it kind of improves the sound and adjusts the sound to your specific characteristics (scans the ear canal and all that). As a result, I liked the sound with HTC USonic more than without it.

In addition, the HTC USonic Adaptive Earphones is equipped with active noise cancellation. To be honest, I didn't get it. External noises are heard in the same way as through alternative "ears" without noise reduction.

In general, the bundled headset is of high quality and thanks for that!

Software

The smartphone runs on Android 7.1.1. On top of it is the own shell of HTC Sense, from the grace, beauty and functionality of which in the old days, almost nothing remained.

Standard wallpapers (animated balls) are just awfully primitive, and the clock widget from the days of Windows Mobile 6.5 is just wild!

Yes, all this, of course, can be easily changed (a million alternative themes are supported), but something still says something about the software developers.

However, the main thing is that there are no glitches and the system works stably. And then there are no questions for U11.

Many manufacturers do not have time to finish their devices to the ideal by the time of release, and here the smartphone has just been presented, and it is already working, as if it had gone through the whole Greek alphabet tests.

Of the oddities.

There is nothing on the smartphone, not even a bad one file manager... Some cropped crutches are started if you connect a USB flash drive via an OTG adapter. This is the end of it.

There are no "industry" applications (for photos and music) - everything is replaced by analogs from Google, to which if only you can subscribe to something, and send all your data to the cloud.

Battery life

It is very alarming that all this wild iron (QS 835 + Quad HD screen) is powered by a battery with a capacity of only 3,000 mAh. It would seem that the smartphone should be discharged to zero by 5 pm, but in reality everything is completely different.

The HTC U11 easily lives under normal stress for one full day.

At the same time, you use everything you need, do not disconnect the wireless modules, and the screen glows for 4-5 hours.

That's what high-quality software optimization means. By the way, many developers try to unload applications so that they do not eat up the battery power, thus, we get a silent one when no notification comes. There are no such problems here - all applications send notifications on time and without delay.

Fast charging Quick Charge 3.0 (although the processor supports 4.0) is present. The device charges from zero to 100% in a little over an hour and a half.

Outcome

The price of a smartphone in Russia is 44,990 rubles for the version with 4 + 64 GB memory and 49,990 rubles for the older modification (6 + 128 GB). And this despite the fact that there, in the United States, they ask for $ 650 for a smartphone in the minimum configuration (about 39 thousand rubles). As you can see, the pricing policy is quite adequate, which cannot be said about the competitors (hello, and Sony!).

I really liked the U11. It's a chic alternative to reign. Especially considering that the camera in U11 gives more possibilities, and our hero costs 10 thousand less. In addition, you get the same fast processor, perfectly optimized software, quality headphones right in the box.

Of course, there were some controversial points. Not everyone will like the flashy appearance, the smartphone is very slippery (now it is already the norm) and it is too big for a 5.5-inch device. However, all these are mostly taste nuances, I cannot attribute them to the minuses.

For my taste, HTC U11 is still the most successful flagship this year. Yes, I have not tested the Nubia Z17 yet (on the way) and, but in terms of photo quality, they are unlikely to compete with our hero. Somewhere nearby - maybe, but they will definitely not push him off the pedestal of the leader.

The birth of the HTC U11

Aesthetics of nature in design

Created using Figma

DESIGN

Iridescent design

Your reflection in everything

The impressive glass surface with an iridescent design is created using a multi-layer coating technology with a light refraction effect. During production, minerals with varying degrees of light re-reflection are introduced into the glass of the rear surface of the device body to different depths. This is how we manage to achieve amazingly rich colors, which are obtained by refracting ambient light, depending on the position of the smartphone body.

Symmetry along three axes

Slim and symmetrical on all sides.

HTC U11 uses a special glass forming process using extreme pressure and high temperature to create the new one-piece curved body. This is not an easy task. As a result, we were able to create a device with a symmetrical design along all three axes. It doesn't matter if you hold it in your right or left hand, vertically or horizontally. Curved 3D glass on the front and back surfaces of the smartphone body makes the design not only visually attractive, but also easy to use.

3D glass screen

Natural colors. Pure visual experience.

The 5.5 ”screen of HTC U11 is made of 3D glass and is specially designed for rich, clear images. Our top-of-the-line screen and natural color reproduction make for a vivid and undistorted impression. You don't have to get used to cropped images or color artifacts at the edges of the screen, as is often the case with curved devices.

EDGE SENSE

A new way to control smartphone functions.

Sometimes what we consider commonplace can be the beginning of a new idea. For example, the habitual movement with which we squeeze the phone. Edge Sense transforms this common action into a completely new way control the functionality of the phone.

You can change everything.

Edge Sense greatly expands the capabilities of your smartphone. You can customize access to a wide range of functions and applications. Open Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest with one click. Or summon a powerful voice assistant Google Assistant! Squeeze the HTC U11 lightly to help you get the job done.

And with always on voice mode you can always call smart assistant with help voice command even when the screen is inactive.

Sending messages is even faster and easier.

Sometimes sending messages on the go is simply not possible. Edge Sense with voice typing lets you speak your message without slowing down. Squeeze your phone lightly, say your message and send it. As easy as pie. The usual input method may be a thing of the past.

Photographing without limits. In rain, heat and cold.

The HTC U11's waterproof design and endlessly easy-to-use Edge Sense technology let you take pictures in rain or heat ii. Even when the water runs across the screen, Edge Sense will help you get the shot you want.

Edge Sense also supports gloved operation. This means that even at low temperatures, your hands will stay warm and you stay connected.

Probably the most advanced headphone ever created for personal audio reproduction.

Allow yourself to hear clearer sound. Together with HTC U11 we present latest version technology HTC USonic, which now not only adjusts to your hearing, but also has an active noise canceling function. USonic headphones scan your ear canal like a sonar and create a unique personalized sound profile based on this data. The result is improved sound that is optimized for the individual characteristics of your ear.

Active noise cancellation

Clear sound with Active Noise Cancellation.

Block external stimuli. USonic now includes Active Noise Cancellation to reduce distraction and focus on your favorite music, games, and videos. The active noise compensation system constantly monitors the external sound background and adjusts to changes "on the fly".

Even more powerful BoomSound. Up and down.

The HTC BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition speakers also take it to the next level. They sound louder and offer better dynamic range when played back. The tweeter contains an acoustic chamber that delivers a crisp and airy sound to the highs and mids. Deep and clear bass is pumped by a completely new woofer with an improved magnetic circuit design. Result? Natural sounding with lots of acoustic details.

    Introduction

Rumors about the new product began to appear long before its official announcement. The earliest sources (late 2016) claimed that the star's name would be HTC Ocean. And only at the beginning of April there was information about the final naming of the flagship - U11. Interestingly, the company was vigorously discussing the name and what options were offered, but came to the conclusion that HTC U11 would be the most logical.

As for the leaked photos, almost all of them were fakes (with two cameras, and in a completely metal case, and in an iPhone-like design, and with a frameless design), or the company could not fully decide on the appearance, since even our acquaintance with the U11 did not take place with the final sample. However, it did not differ much from the commercial sample.

As a result, we got something in between U Play and U Ultra, that is, completely departed from the concept of HTC 10 - a brutal piece of metal with sharp facial features.

Since I have been using HTC U Play for almost two months, and the U11 does not differ much from its little brother externally and in terms of material, it will be easy for me to tell you about the experience of using the flagship.

In addition to the fancy technical parameters, the developers in the U11 highlight the Edge Sense recognition technology and still promote the Sense Companion, which should give various clues based on the analysis of smartphone data.

Besides, as already mentioned in our acquaintance, not the last place is occupied by photo and video capabilities of HTC U11. The device was successfully tested by the DXOMark team (specializing in meticulous professional reviews of cameras and optics since 2003) with a rating of 90 points, which is more than any other smartphone in the world.

A few weeks before the Russian pre-order, Andrey Kormiltsev, head of the HTC representative office in Russia, shared in a social Twitter networks information: "... And for the price - let's try to surprise :)" After some time, the price was officially announced - 45,000 rubles.

    Design, dimensions, controls

As mentioned earlier, I have been using HTC U Play for a long time. Despite the fact that a couple of months ago I did not write best review about the U Play device, during long-term use it turned out that it is not so strange: stable notifications, a fast and accurate camera with perfect white balance in any conditions, an excellent screen, good assembly and materials. The only drawback is the battery: its algorithms were not clear to me. Either the gadget worked all day with four hours of screen glow, then it lived to the middle of the day with two hours of glow.

Actually, it's not about U Play today. The backstory was written in order to bring to the main idea of the HTC U11's design: the U11 and U Play smartphones are very similar in this regard, and the user experience is almost the same. In fact, the appearance of the flagship is a modified version of the Play device.

The main feature of the design is the glass surface on the back side. The site describes in detail how it is created. 4 colors of the younger version of the device went on sale: black, blue, white and light blue. In my opinion, the most spectacular colors are red (not yet for sale) and blue. On my test, there was a version in white. Each of the colors shimmers nicely in the light, displaying other shades, for example: white casts a reddish tint.

And this is how a smartphone looks in black.

Naturally, prints cover the entire surface abundantly (on white it is almost imperceptible).

On the HTC U11, as on the HTC U Play, over time, small kotski appeared on the glass back, but the matter did not come to deep scratches. In principle, you can put on the bumper covers that come with the kit. However, they somewhat thicken the gadgets, and the ergonomics of the design are violated.

By the way, about the ease of use. The flagship measures 153.9 x 75.9 x 7.9 mm and weighs about 170 grams. Personally, it seemed to me wide and heavy, especially against the background of the Samsung Galaxy S8 + (however, this model is too long) and even the HTC U Play. It is clear that the matter is in wide frames, not only on the right and on the left, but also above / below. In this regard, U11 for some reason "did not want" to catch up with its main competitors (LG and Samsung). Therefore, he received a lot of critical reviews from the press.

The front panel is protected by 2.5D (in this model, the glass inflow on the sides is maximum) Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Of course, there is an oleophobic coating. Its quality is excellent - prints can be removed easily.

Side frames - metal. In the white version, they silver color, matte.

The assembly is cool, the device feels monolithic, does not squeeze, does not creak or play when twisted.

On the front: missed events indicator, sensors, microphone, camera and main speaker. Its volume is high, audible clearly and legibly. The only strange moment: in my sample I hear sounds similar to data transmission nearby. It doesn't bother you at all, but you can hear it.

Under the display - a fingerprint scanner, touch buttons backlit. There are no questions for them.

Below is a microphone, USB Type-C with USB 3.1 support, and a speaker. There is one more hole, but I have not quite figured out what it is for: either a microphone, or a drain hole, because HTC U11 is protected according to the IP67 standard: from dust, splashes and water when immersed to a depth of one meter in fresh water for a period of up to 30 minutes. There is the same hole at the top.

Slots for nanoSIM + nanoSIM or nanoSIM + microSD - at the top, the slot is combined.

On the right is the power button and volume rocker. They are almost sunk into the body, it's hard to find them, the pressure is firm, the travel is minimal. It would be worth making them a little larger with a clearer and more confident move.

On the back, you will find another microphone (there are 4 in total), a dual single-tone flash and a lens with a metallic silver ring. It looks more laconic and harmonious than a ring on U Play.

HTC U11 and HTC U Play

    Display

The novelty from HTC received a 5.5-inch screen diagonal. The frames are wide enough: 15 mm at the top, 18 mm at the bottom, and about 4 mm at the sides. There is a high-quality anti-reflective coating (even better than on the LG G6).

Screen resolution - QHD, that is, 1440x2560 pixels, density - 534 PPI. The IPS matrix is marketed as SuperLCD 5.

Maximum brightness of white color - 435 cd / m2 (with manual selection) and more than 500 - in "Auto" mode. Contrast - 1100: 1 - 1400: 1. The picture is perfectly readable in the sun.

The viewing angles are maximum, the picture loses contrast slightly under tilts. The rest is an excellent screen with cool juicy colors close to AMOLED matrices! For fans of faded colors, the developers should soon enable sRGB mode.

    Battery

This model uses a built-in 3000 mAh battery. Official data of working hours:

    • Talk time on 3G / 4G networks: up to 24.5 hours
    • Standby time in 3G / 4G networks: up to 14 days

    My data.

At moderate load (mainly Wi-Fi network, some photos and videos, 1 hour of calls) the device "lives" from 9.00 to 01.00. In this case, the glow of the screen can be 5 - 7 hours.

Under heavy load (constant 3G / 4G connection, music for about two hours with active noise cancellation), when traveling outside Moscow, the smartphone works from 9.00 to 18.00. Screen glow 3 - 3.5 hours.

In addition, I noticed that outside the city (50 km) in the MTS network, the device was discharged faster than in Moscow, although it was also connected to Wi-Fi point access. As a result, I put it on charge at night, used it until the evening and put it on charge again.

If you watch a video at full brightness, the battery will run out after 7.5 hours, with toys - in 5 hours.

In general, the operating time is decent for a device with a 3000 mAh battery, personally I did not have any discomfort. Unless at the dacha, due to the poor quality of the MTS network, it was necessary to charge the phone in the evening, and not at night.

    HTC U11 smartphone supports fast charging QC 3.0 standard. In 30 minutes the device charges 45%, in 40 - 60%, in 1 hour 15 minutes - 90%, in 1 hour 30 minutes - 95%, in 1 hour 45 minutes - 100%.

    Communication capabilities

The device is equipped with two nanoSIM slots. The device supports 3G / 4G (LTE CAT 15) networks in Russian frequencies:

    • GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz),
    • WCDMA (850/900/1800/1900 MHz),
    • FDD-LTE (band B4 / B12 / B17 / B28 / B20 / B5 / B8 / B3 / B1 / B7 / B32)

There is an NFC chip (supports Mifare). The rest is standard: Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac Dual Band, Bluetooth 4.2, USB Type-C (USB 3.1) for charge / synchronization. GPS navigation works seamlessly.

The HTC U11 also has an Edge Sensor. Select the force of the side edges compression and assign different things to this function: take a screenshot, take a photo, activate the recorder or run any application. You can squeeze shortly or for a long time. The sensitivity is adjusted in the option settings.

Unfortunately, Edge Sense was not inspired, for me the compression of the side edges turned out to be not entirely familiar and comfortable, since it is necessary to apply a certain amount of force. And this force of compression was uncomfortable for me, and I couldn't make the sensitivity even less. It's like 3D Touch on the iPhone: some use it, some don't. I believe that any forceful (shaking, pressing the screen, squeezing edges) interaction with a smartphone is unnatural.

    Memory

The HTC U11 smartphone is sold in two versions: 4 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. In general, it is quite a logical decision.

I tested 64GB memory speed - 810/207 MB / s. This is a very high speed! And you really feel it: applications open instantly, and installation of programs is fast.

In the comments to other reviews, I was asked to test more and RAM... Executing - 7931 MB / s.

Instead of one of the sim cards, you can put a memory card up to 2 TB.

    Cameras

Perhaps, from my point of view, the main argument in favor of the HTC U11 is the camera. I'm not going to talk about the second round about the fact that the well-known DXOMark assigned the highest score (at the moment) to the U11 camera. I am skeptical about such statements, so I'm used to checking everything myself. To compare shots I asked Samsung for the S8 +.

In the meantime, dry data on HTC U11 cameras.

Main module: 12 MP BSI, aperture f = 1.7, HTC UltraPixel 3 technology with a pixel size of 1.4 μm, optical stabilization, phase autofocus. Double flash of one tone.

Front module: 16 MP BSI, aperture f = 2.0, no autofocus. Soft flash due to the short-term glow of the screen.

In order not to clutter up the review with unnecessary scribbling, I will say this: the HTC U11 camera is the best when shooting in the daytime! Wide dynamic range, accurate and natural color reproduction, beautiful and smooth bokeh without artifacts.

When compared with the shots on the Samsung S8 +, it turned out that the Galaxy slightly increases saturation, adds sharpness and contrast. Therefore, the picture looks a little flatter than the picture from the HTC U11 camera. I am sure that those who are not particularly versed in cameras will not understand the difference at all or will choose Samsung for a more colorful and overshadowed picture.

The HTC U11's camera focus is very fast, but only manual focus and digital zoom help to focus on difficult macro objects.

When the light is dimmed, the Samsung Galaxy S8 + comes into play. His picture is obtained without noise and artifacts. But the point here is in the software, since Galaxy sets ISO much lower, and HTC increases this value almost three times. This is weird.

The HTC U11 smartphone records video in up to 4K resolution at 30fps. The sound is recorded on 4 microphones, although in itself it is stereo. There is a choice between Hi-Res and 3D. I would advise choosing Hi-Res, since there is almost no sense from 3D (in theory, when zooming, the sensitivity of the place where the sound comes from should increase, but I only heard the combination of stereo to mono). The detail of the sound disappointed me a little. The impression that the microphones have been put on windscreens: in the forest you will not hear the singing of birds and rustling of leaves. For concerts, maybe a great thing, but not for household video recordings.

Video stabilization is good, but it's even more stable on the S8 +. The picture is nicer on HTC U11, because it copes better with backlight, less contrast and a little wider DD.

The device can shoot in RAW (DNG). The files are 24 MB each (average JPEG size is 4 MB).

There is completely manual settings: ISO (100 to 800), shutter speed (32 to 1/8000 sec), focus from 80 mm. I would advise developers to rework the shutter and focus selection menu - the sliders are too small, which makes it difficult to quickly set the value. After all, there are almost professional settings here.

The front camera completely satisfied me. There is a flash due to the glow of the screen. The effective distance is up to 1.5 meters.

Of course, HTC U11 runs all toys at maximum settings with all possible maximum FPS. Apps do not slow down, and everything works like a clock. Under load, the body of the device heats up, but within reason.

In the Antutu test, it scores 176,000 points. Almost all modern flagship devices have roughly comparable ratings.

Smartphone runs on operating system Google android version 7.1.1. As a shell - HTC Sense. I am sure that HTC U11 will receive all the updates for at least a couple of years.

    Multimedia

The smartphone was equipped with two speakers: the top speaker is located, and the bottom is for output speakerphone... However, the developers managed to combine their work to get stereo sound. So, the lower one is responsible for the bass, and the upper one is responsible for the output of high frequencies. The stereo panorama is average, but the sound is of high quality and very loud. I can compare with Huawei P10 Plus or P9 Plus.

When listening, you can select the presets "Theater" or "Music". I liked "At the Theater" more. The second mode cuts off for some reason high frequencies.

As you already understood, HTC U11 lacks a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. I think this is not very good. It's also bad on the iPhone. The USB-C connector is wide and long. There is a possibility of accidentally breaking it.

Includes headphones (same as HTC U Play). They contain microphones for analyzing sound in the auricle and suppressing noise. When I listened to music for the first time in the subway with a "noise control", I thought that he did not work at all. However, I later found out that the noise suppression is too weak: only quiet monotonous sounds are cut off. That is, sitting in a subway car, you should not dream of silence.

I liked the reproduction quality: firm bass, good mids and pleasant highs. Below is the frequency response from GSMArena (although the graph is painfully flat).

    Conclusion

The quality of the connection did not disappoint: the network is caught steadily well, Wi-Fi is not cut off. The vibrating alert is average in strength, but feels without any problems in jeans pockets.

Even before testing, I realized that the appearance of the device would be for everybody: no matter what they say, but in 2017 I want to have a thin case, narrow frames and a screen for almost the entire front panel. This is not the case in U11. However, I am sure that the classic design of the device without curved screens will still be perceived positively by many.

As you understand, I was neutral about Edge Sense, and the HTC Companion function still works in its usual mode: it prompts the weather, counts steps, and, perhaps, that's all.

During the day, the HTC U11's camera shoots very well, I think better than the competitors' cameras: excellent dynamic range, smooth and clear bokeh, fast focus, accurate colors. However, I would like to slightly modify the pictures when shooting at night and make more convenient sliders for selecting the shutter speed and focus.

The sound through the speakers is great and stereo. Everyone will definitely like it. The sound in the headphones is quite decent, but since I am not a music lover, I cannot unequivocally answer who plays better - Meizu Pro 6 Plus, Samsung S8 or Highscreen Boost 3.

Of course, it was not without comparison with the main competitor - Samsung Galaxy S8 +. On his side, from my point of view, a more spectacular appearance. Everything else is either the same, or a little worse. For example, the S8 + only has one speaker and is not as loud as the HTC U11. The fingerprint scanner in the S8 + is inconveniently located, in the HTC it is right there. But Galaxy has a standard headphone jack, and so on ...

However, it is worth remembering the cost of both devices. The official RRC price of HTC U11 starts at 45,000 rubles, and Samsung Galaxy S8 + - from 60,000 rubles. But it will be fair to say that in retail you can find S8 + and from 47,000 rubles for the PCT "tube". But HTC is still not sold in many places.

I am sure that in a couple of months the price of the HTC U11 will go even lower, and then it will be possible to buy thousands for 38-40 thousand. In the meantime, those who “cannot bear to get married” have the opportunity to purchase the flagship model HTC U11 for 45,000 rubles 4/64 GB and for 50,000 rubles 6/128 GB.
